After working as a public servant for more than 30 years, Vi could not simply walk away from working to improve the city that that she loves. When the Democratic National Convention came here in 2012, she worked on the local host committee to help Charlotteans participate in this historic event. After the convention, she wanted to do more. Inspired by former Harvey Gantt and Anthony Foxx, she decided to continue her career in public service as an elected official. Vi is committed to building on their legacies of an inclusive, equitable Charlotte. During her tenure, the city has already secured more than $70 million for affordable housing through public-private partnerships to ensure that everyone in Charlotte has a place to call home. As that work continues, this year Vi has also focused on getting to one of the root causes of the city’s housing crisis: good-paying jobs. With the help of business and city leaders along with other partners in workforce development and education, Vi will make Charlotte the hub for jobs in the region. Already, the city is off to a strong start with 3,500 jobs added in December 2018 alone.

Vi has often been quoted saying that people who work in Charlotte should be able to live in Charlotte. During her time as Mayor, she has worked to make that a reality and she wants to continue to make Charlotte a more equitable place for all people.
