We know climate change is real, it’s here, and there’s little time for us to prevent it from turning into a devastating disaster – one that will wreak havoc on some of the most vulnerable communities across our country and the planet.

We need legislation like the Green New Deal and progressive leaders like Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez to mitigate the worst impacts climate change, create good jobs, and promote environmental justice.

DFA: “We’re committed to fighting like hell to ensure… [Trump] doesn’t destroy RBG’s legacy.”

Democracy for America CEO Yvette Simpson on the death of U.S. Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg:

“Tonight, the country mourns the loss of a great American jurist and a pioneer in the fight for women’s rights and equal justice under the law. Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg was an American hero and icon who will go down in history as one of the most important voices for justice and progress the U.S. Supreme Court has ever known.

“A fighter for what’s right until the very end, Justice Ginsburg made it clear in the days before her death that her “most fervent wish is that I will not be replaced until a new president is installed."

“While Donald Trump has shown no limits to the depths to which he’ll sink to secure power, we expect him to honor the dying wish of an American hero. If he won’t do that, we hope that Senator Mitch McConnell will do what’s right and refrain from holding hearings until the next President and a new Congress can be sworn in January.

“If Judge Merrick Garland didn’t even deserve a hearing 237 days before an election, there’s no way on earth forcing a Supreme Court nomination 45 days before an election would be even remotely acceptable.

“Either way, tomorrow and for every day until January 20th, we’re committed to fighting like hell to ensure that Donald Trump and Senate Republicans don’t destroy Justice Ginsburg’s legacy of progress and steal another Supreme Court seat.” -- Yvette Simpson, CEO, Democracy for America

Democracy for America endorses Nikema Willams for Congress in GA-5

Today, Democracy for America (DFA) announced its endorsement of Nikema Williams in the open race for Georgia’s 5th Congressional district, to fill the seat of civil rights icon Rep. John Lewis.

Georgia State Senator Nikema Wiliams has spent her career fighting for voting rights, fair representation, and to empower marginalized communities. Williams was first elected to the Georgia State Senate in 2017 and became the first Black woman to serve as chair of the Georgia Democrats, first on an interim basis in 2013 and permanently in 2019.

After formally announcing her candidacy on the 55th anniversary of the passage of the Voting Rights Act, Williams has made it clear that she’s committed to carrying on the late John Lewis’ leadership on voting rights and other major progressive priorities in Congress.

Statement from DFA CEO Yvette Simpson on the grassroots progressive group’s endorsement of Williams:

“No one will ever fill the shoes of American hero and civil rights icon John Lewis, but it’s hard to imagine someone better equipped to do justice to his trailblazing legacy and serve the people of Georgia’s 5th Congressional District than Georgia State Senator Nikema Williams. Democracy for America is excited to endorse Nikema Williams for Congress because we know she’ll continue to lead the fight for voting rights while picking up the banner for other important progressive issues like the Green New Deal and Medicare for all.

“A relentless advocate for reproductive justice, free and fair elections, and an economy that works for working families and not just billionaires, Nikema is a trusted and tested leader in her community who knows how to get the job done and win tough fights.

“Democracy for America is honored to stand Nikema Williams in her race for Georgia’s 5th Congressional district, and we look forward to fighting alongside her through November and beyond.” -- Yvette Simpson, CEO, Democracy for America

Statement from Nikema Williams on receiving DFA’s 2020 endorsement:

"Now more than ever, we need bold leadership fighting for American families no matter the zip-code. I will be a champion for Medicare for All and Universal Family Care while fighting systemic racism and voter suppression. I'm proud to be endorsed by Democracy for America as we continue to fight for the promise of America." -- Nikema Williams

DFA says Markey primary win is “perfect capstone” to year of “transformative progressive victories”

U.S. Senator Ed Markey just successfully beat back Rep. Joe Kennedy III’s primary challenge in Massachusetts delivering progressives yet another 2020 primary victory.

Democracy for America endorsed Sen. Markey late last month.

DFA CEO Yvette Simpson on Sen. Ed Markey’s Democratic primary victory in Massachusetts:

“Sen. Ed Markey’s win in this race was the perfect capstone to a 2020 primary season packed with transformative progressive victories that underscore the simple fact that progressive voters and leaders are and will continue to be the future of the Democratic Party in the years ahead.

“Just as importantly, Sen. Markey’s victory in this race makes it clear that the next generation of Democratic leaders are choosing their champions, not by their youth or their ties to the storied names of the past, but by the boldness of the ideas they’re willing to fight for today.

“From the Green New Deal to Medicare for All, Sen. Ed Markey has been one of the most reliable allies of the progressive movement in the U.S. Senate in the battle for progress, justice, and equity. Here’s hoping that Sen. Markey’s victory in this primary serves as a powerful reminder that, when leaders build a record fighting for a visionary, transformative progressive agenda, Democracy for America and the progressive movement has their back. -- Yvette Simpson, Chief Executive Officer, Democracy for America

Democracy for America endorses Sara Gideon for U.S. Senate in Maine

Today, Democracy for America (DFA) announced its endorsement of Sara Gideon for U.S. Senate in Maine.

The endorsement of Gideon is part of DFA’s 2020 “Flip the Senate” strategy, which aims to (a) hold Senate Republicans accountable for the role they played in enabling Donald Trump’s massive mishandling of the COVID-19 crisis and (b) end Republican control of a body that could halt inclusive populist reform, even with a Democrat in the White House.

To take the majority in the U.S. Senate, Democrats need to gain just four additional seats. Prior to today, the grassroots progressive group has endorsed U.S Senate candidates Rev. Raphael Warnock, Jamie Harrison, Cal Cunningham, and Theresa Greenfield in their seat-flipping U.S. Senate races in Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina, and Iowa, respectively.

Statement from DFA CEO Yvette Simpson on the grassroots group’s endorsements of Greenfield for U.S. Senate in Maine:

“Sara Gideon is running for the U.S. Senate to stand up for Mainers, not corporate interests. During her time in the State House, Sara has shown that she can win tough fights, build tested coalitions, and enact policies that help working families thrive.

“We know that Sara Gideon will be a leader in Washington who the progressive movement can work with and that’s why Democracy for America is excited to endorse her in Maine’s race for U.S. Senate.

“Democracy for America’s 1 million members nationwide are particularly excited to stand with Sara Gideon in this race because her victory will, finally, bring to an end Sen. Susan Collins’ career of capitulation to the bigoted, right-wing forces the dominate the Republican Party.

“From her vote to confirm accused rapist Brett Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court and acquit Trump in the Senate’s sham impeachment trial to her ascent to Trump’s massive tax giveaway to millionaires and billionaires, Susan Collins has spent the past four years putting what’s good for Donald Trump ahead of what’s good for Mainers. Susan Collins is the most unpopular member of the U.S. Senate for good reason and that’s precisely why every Democrat, including progressives, need to be all in on the fight to retire her once and all.

“Every road to ending Mitch McConnell’s death grip on the U.S. Senate and creating a Democratic majority in the Senate that’s capable of passing the progressive agenda our country desperately needs runs through Maine. It’s time to send Sen. Susan Collins packing, and Democracy for America is honored to fight alongside Sara Gideon to do just that.” -- Yvette Simpson, CEO, Democracy for America

Statement from Maine’s U.S. Senate candidate Sara Gideon on receiving Democracy for America’s support in this race:

“Mainers deserve a senator who fights for them and their families, not big corporations and special interests. Instead, Senator Collins worked with Mitch McConnell to pass a nearly $2 trillion tax break for big corporations at the expense of hardworking people. It’s time for new leaders in the Senate who aren't beholden to special interests -- and that change starts here in Maine. I’m proud to be endorsed by Democracy for America and look forward to working with them to reform Washington and end the influence of big money on politics.” -- Sara Gideon

Democracy for America backs Ed Markey for reelection to U.S. Senate in Massachusetts

Today, Democracy for America (DFA) announced its endorsement of Ed Markey in the competitive primary for the U.S. Senate in Massachusetts.

While DFA has been primarily focused in 2020 U.S. Senate races on a “Flip the Senate” strategy focused on returning Congress’s upper chamber to Democratic control, the grassroots progressive group felt it was necessary to endorse in the primary in deep blue Massachusetts to help ensure that Markey, a tested champion for progressive priorities, remains in the United States Senate.

Statement from DFA CEO Yvette Simpson on the grassroots group’s endorsements of Sen. Ed Markey’s reelection to the U.S. Senate in Massachusetts:

“In 2020, our country needs strong, tested leaders that progressives can trust to fight for social, racial, economic, and climate justice in the U.S. Senate and, in the Senate primary in Massachusetts, that leader is Senator Ed Markey.

“The son of a milkman, Sen. Markey was born into a working-class family that taught him that real progressive leaders can’t be identified by the last name they were born with, but by the people they fight for, the bold stands they take, and the battles they wage.

“From his early leadership in the fight against climate change to his co-sponsorship of the Green New Deal with Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Sen. Markey has been a bold, visionary progressive leader in the fight for climate justice and against environmental racism. And, it’s not just on climate -- on Medicare for All, criminal justice reform, student debt, and the minimum wage, Sen. Markey has been one of the most steadfast allies progressives have had in the United States Senate.

“Sen. Markey might not be the youngest candidate in this race or come from its most famous family, but Sen. Markey knows how to look ahead, lead the way, and fight for our shared progressive values -- and that’s why we’re honored to fight for him in this primary.” -- Yvette Simpson, CEO, Democracy for America

Statement from U.S. Senator Ed Markey on receiving Democracy for America’s primary support:

“I am incredibly honored to have the support of Democracy for America in my race for re-election to the United States Senate.”

"Democracy for America understands the strength of our people-powered, grassroots movement to create real, progressive change across our country. Together, we will organize to ensure economic, health care, housing, educational, and environmental justice for every person, and work toward a more equitable and just future for every child. I look forward to the work we will do together.” -- Sen. Ed Markey.

DFA has 47,849 members in Massachusetts and more than one million members nationwide.

Markey is one of the only incumbent U.S. Senators that Democracy for America has endorsed this cycle. Prior to today, the grassroots progressive group has endorsed Rev. Raphael Warnock, Jamie Harrison, Cal Cunningham, and Theresa Greenfield in their seat-flipping U.S. Senate races in Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina, and Iowa, respectively.

VICTORY: DFA cheers Ilhan Omar’s MN-05 primary victory over “wealthy, right-wing interests”

Ilhan Omar just successfully beat back a primary challenge in Minnesota’s 5th Congressional District.

Omar was one of DFA’s very first endorsements of the 2020 cycle in March 2019 and received DFA’s support in her first race for Congress in 2018.

DFA CEO Yvette Simpson on Ilhan Omar’s 2020 primary victory in Minnesota:

“Rep. Ilhan Omar’s win in this primary is a tremendous victory for voters in her district and progressives across the country that all but ensures that every single original member of ‘the squad’ will continue leading the fight for a bold progressive agenda in Congress next year.

“These primary results should also make it clear that the wealthy Democratic Party insiders and right-wing interests who’ve done everything in their power to tear Ilhan Omar down over the last two years and prop up her opponent in this primary can’t smear and lie their way to victory over a progressive leader who’s willing to buck the status quo, speak truth to power, and fight for justice.

“Democracy for America has been honored to fight alongside Rep. Ilhan Omar in both of her primary victories and we look forward to continuing our battle for Medicare for All, a Green New Deal, robust criminal justice reform, and more just U.S. foreign policy at her side for many years to come.” -- Yvette Simpson, Chief Executive Officer, Democracy for America

Democracy for America’s response to Biden’s pick of Sen. Kamala Harris for Vice President

Vice President Joe Biden just announced that he has chosen Sen. Kamala Harris as his running mate in the 2020 election.

Here’s Democracy for America’s reaction to Biden’s selection of Harris as Vice President:

“Vice President Biden’s selection of Senator Kamala Harris gives Democrats a historic opportunity to defeat Donald Trump, break through a glass ceiling for Black women, and win majorities in both the House and the Senate that can deliver the bold progressive reforms we need to restore America.

“We also know that the COVID-19 crisis and an unprecedented full-scale effort by Republicans to preemptively delegitimize the vote and obstruct Americans’ access to the ballot box mean that Democrats need to deliver a victory so big that when Donald Trump cheats it won’t work.

“We urge Vice President Biden and Senator Harris to build a campaign over the next three months that can energize, mobilize, and excite every segment of the Democratic coalition, including progressives, to defeat Trump and win big.” -- Yvette Simpson, CEO, Democracy for America

VICTORY: DFA says Hoadley’s MI-06 primary win sets up Dems to “deliver a historic upset to” Upton

Jon Hoadley just won the Democratic primary in Michigan’s 6th Congressional district delivering an important victory for progressives and giving Democrats a strong shot at defeating 17-term incumbent Republican Rep. Fred Upton in November.

Democracy for America endorsed Hoadley for Congress in March and has supported him in his past races for the Michigan State House.

DFA CEO Yvette Simpson on Jon Hoadley’s Democratic primary victory in Michigan’s 6th:

“Thanks to progressive Jon Hoadley’s primary victory, Michigan Democrats are better positioned to defeat Republican Fred Upton than they have been in decades.

“A lifelong progressive changemaker, Jon won this primary by making it clear that he’ll stand up for the same common-sense, progressive values he’s fought for in Lansing when he gets to Washington.

“But most importantly, Jon won this primary by building a strong, people-powered campaign that rallied the Democratic base, inspired new voters, and is earnestly committed to earning every single vote -- and that’s exactly what we need every progressive to do to win in November.

“Democracy for America was excited to support Jon in this primary and we can’t wait to do everything we can over the next three months to help him deliver a historic upset over a 17-term incumbent this Fall.” -- Yvette Simpson, Chief Executive Officer, Democracy for America

VICTORY: DFA says Rashida Tlaib’s huge victory in MI-13 is a “clear vote of support”

Rashida Tlaib just successfully fought back a primary challenge in Michigan’s 13th Congressional District.

DFA made Tlaib was one of its very first endorsements of the 2020 cycle in March 2019 and was one of her early primary supporters ahead of her 2018 race.

DFA CEO Yvette Simpson on Rashida Tlaib’s 2020 primary victory in Michigan:

“From the very first day of her very first campaign, Rashida Tlaib has known exactly the families and communities she’s fighting for and the powerful interests she’s willing to take on to do it. That’s why voters in Michigan’s 13th Congressional District gave Rashida Tlaib their clear vote of support in this primary and why she will continue to be one of the most outspoken and courageous champions for progressive change we have in the U.S. House.

“Make no mistake, Rashida Tlaib earned the support of 13th District voters because she fearlessly stood up for progressive values and fought to deliver for her constituents. In less than two years in Congress, Rashida not only became a national leader in the fight for key progressive priorities like Medicare for All and a Green New Deal, she also got a Republican president she vowed to impeach to sign a bill she championed protecting pension benefits, successfully passed an amendment to fund the replacement of lead water pipes, and set-up four in-district service centers to directly aid her constituents.

“Democracy of America has been honored to stand shoulder-to-shoulder with Rashida since before she was grabbing headlines in Washington, and we can’t wait to continue fighting alongside her as she continues her fight for Michigan’s 13th and our shared progressive values.” -- Yvette Simpson, Chief Executive Officer, Democracy for America

VICTORY: DFA celebrates Tishaura Jones’ win in Democratic primary for St. Louis Treasurer

Earlier this morning, Tishaura Jones won the Democratic primary in her bid to be reelected Treasurer of the City of St. Louis, MO.

Democracy for America endorsed Jones’ bid for reelection in May. In 2017, DFA supported Jones in her race for Mayor of St. Louis.

DFA CEO Yvette Simpson on Tishuara Jones’ primary victory in the race for Treasurer of St. Louis, MO:

“Tishuara Jones’ record pushing for reform, delivering for working families, and standing up for our shared progressive values earned her this resounding primary victory in her bid to be reelected Treasurer of the City of St. Louis.

“From working to ban the box that prevents so many with a criminal record from getting a job with the city departments she runs, to ensuring that every employee she supervises gets at least a living wage of $15/hour, Tishura Jones has led the City of St. Louis’ Treasurers’ Office as a progressive champion and we can’t wait to see what she does next.

“Democracy for America was honored to stand with Tishuara in this reelection primary bid and we look forward to working with and supporting her for many, many years to come.” -- Yvette Simpson, Chief Executive Officer, Democracy for America

Test PAV Sidebar

With President Donald Trump openly undermining our ability to conduct elections by mail and Republicans in state governments across the country actively working to deny people the opportunity to vote, this election will test our democracy like never before.

The Protect America’s Vote campaign aims to counteract Republican efforts to suppress the vote completely in as many places as possible. Where we can, the campaign will work to reduce the impact through direct support and creative actions.

We will register, engage, turn-out, and protect voters in the wake of the unique challenges posed by a blatantly anti-democratic White House and the COVID-19 crisis during what is likely one of the most important elections in American history.

The campaign targets 13 priority states where DFA members will have the highest impact: Arizona, Colorado, Georgia, Iowa, Maine, Wisconsin, Michigan, Nevada, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Texas, and Florida.

Our electoral strategy targets turning out the vote and raising the tide of progressive elected officials throughout all levels of government. From City Councils and District Attorneys to Congress and the Presidency, we look to endorse and support candidates in a “layer cake” strategy of overlapping elections that drive votes up and down the ticket, not just the ones at the top. That is why we have focused on thirteen states critical to victory in the Presidential race that also have the added value of flipping the U.S. Senate and/or winning federal, state or local-level races that are critically important to other progressive priorities (e.g. seizing state legislative chambers ahead of redistricting, protecting key progressive voices in the U.S. House, etc.)

In addition to identification, persuasion, and GOTV, we will engage in voter education. We will train candidates to organize voters, surrogates, base constituencies, and infrequent voters in distance digital organizing and mobilization strategies. We work in coordination with endorsed campaigns, so our efforts are targeted and aligned with their electoral strategies, not redundant or inconsistent. We will work hand in hand with them to expand the electorate, build for the surge in mail-in voting, and drive victory on Election Day.

Secret Police have No Place in America

Sen. Jeff Merkley here from Oregon. We face a grave threat to our democracy. Donald Trump has deployed secret police in my home city of Portland, and is threatening to do it in other cities across America.

His Department of Homeland Security is using unidentified paramilitary forces to patrol the streets of Portland, Oregon and they’re throwing people into unmarked vehicles. They’re using tear gas and munitions against peaceful protesters.

We know Trump has coddled dictators like Putin in Russia and Duterte in the Philippines, and now he’s trying to act like them.

The American people must speak out and say NO! We must defend the Constitution.

Will you join me and Democracy for America and make your voice heard right now? Tell Trump that secret police have no place in America and tell Congress to prohibit these police state tactics.

When you sign this petition, you’ll be joining tens of thousands (hopefully, hundreds of thousands) of Americans demanding the protection of our democracy. I will stand up and make sure that my colleagues know what’s at stake and how many Americans are standing with us.

This is the stuff of anti-democratic nightmares. We must fight back. Sign this petition now!

Your Senators Can Help Stop Netanyahu’s Illegal Annexation

Last month, DFA joined a petition with our allies at Americans for Peace Now to stop Netanyahu from unilaterally annexing parts of the West Bank.

Because of the work that DFA members like you have done to help our allies build this campaign and create grassroots pressure, some United States Senators are starting to take action.

Senator Chris Van Hollen has introduced an amendment that would block the Netanyahu government from using any U.S. aid to fund their illegal annexation plans.

This amendment is backed by 13 senators, and now we NEED your help to get more Senators to cosponsor the Van Hollen amendment.

Tell your Senators to cosponsor the Van Hollen amendment or thank them if they already have.

Due to support from the Trump administration, Netanyahu and his far-right allies see this moment as an opportunity to permanently seize Palestinian land, but thankfully, his annexation plan has temporarily stalled.

With this current delay, it is very crucial that DFA members and our allies at Americans for Peace Now use this opportunity to help bring an end to the threat of annexation.

If the Israeli Government knows loud and clear that the U.S. Senate fully opposes their plan, we can help permanently prevent the illegal and unilateral annexation that was supposed to officially happen on July 1st.

The rest of the world has condemned and resisted this plan, let's do our part and make sure that the United States Senate does the same.

Join DFA and Americans for Peace Now in telling our Senators to cosponsor the Van Hollen amendment.

By contacting your Senator you will show them that Americans recognize the rights of Palestinians while also caring deeply about achieving peace between Israel and Palestine.

Thank you for standing together against the annexation of the West Bank,

VICTORY: DFA calls Siegel’s TX-10 run-off win a “crystal clear rejection” of corporate Dem playbook

Mike Siegel just won the Democratic run-off in Texas’ 10th Congressional district delivering an important win for progressives and giving Democrats a strong shot at defeating Republican Rep. Michael McCaul in November.

Democracy for America endorsed Siegel in April.

DFA CEO Yvette Simpson on Mike Siegel’s run-off victory:

“Mike Siegel’s run-off victory in Texas’ 10th Congressional District is a crystal clear rejection of the false notion that Democrats’ path to victory in November lies in being a kinder, gentler version of a Republican.

“Indeed, Mike won tonight and we were proud to stand with him ahead of this run-off because of his support for Medicare for All, a Green New Deal, and robust criminal justice reform, not in spite of it.

“Democrats, independents, and even some Republicans increasingly understand that the broken healthcare system the COVID-19 crisis has exposed and the growing threat posed by climate change won’t be fixed by poll-tested half-measures that tip-toe around the powerful interests who profit off them today. Mike Siegel understood that too -- that’s why he put forward bold ideas to address some of our country’s biggest problems and is now well-positioned to retire his eight-term Republican opponent.

“Back in 2018, Mike Siegel got closer to defeating Republican Michael McCaul than any Democrat since McCaul made it to Congress. In 2020, Mike Siegel is going to finish the job and Democracy for America is excited to have his back every step of the way.” -- Yvette Simpson, CEO, Democracy for America

VICTORY: DFA calls Valenzuela’s TX-24 run-off success an “important win for progressives”

Candace Valenzuela just won an upset victory in the Democratic runoff in Texas’ 24th Congressional District.

Democracy for America endorsed Valenzuela early last month.

DFA CEO Yvette Simpson on Candace Valenzuela run-off win in TX-24:

“Candace Valenzuela’s victory tonight is an important win for progressives and anyone who believes that it’s critical to build a more representative democracy while fighting to hold the Democratic majority in the U.S. House.

“A lifelong Texan and the daughter of U.S. Army veterans who struggled with homelessness during her childhood, Candace has an intimate understanding of the struggles facing working families in Texas’ 24th. And, if anyone doubted it before tonight, Candace clearly knows how to defy the odds, stare down big money, and win a momentum-building victory.

“Democracy for America was honored to be a part of the broad, progressive-led coalition of Democrats who stood with Candace Valenzuela in this primary, and we’re excited to continue fighting alongside Candace as she works to retire Rep. Kenny Marchant this November. ” -- Yvette Simpson, CEO, Democracy for America

Democracy for America endorses Paulette Jordan for U.S. Senate in Idaho

Today, Democracy for America (DFA) announced its endorsement of Paulette Jordan for U.S. Senate in Idaho. Jordan is the Democratic nominee opposing Republican U.S. Sen. Jim Risch in November.

DFA proudly supported Jordan in her race for governor in 2018, when she became the first woman nominated for Governor by a major party in Idaho and the first Native American woman nominated for Governor in U.S. history. When elected, Jordan will become the first Native American woman elected to the U.S. Senate.

Statement from DFA CEO Charles Chamberlain on the grassroots progressive group’s endorsement of Paulette Jordan for U.S. Senate in Idaho:

“When she gets to the U.S. Senate, Paulette Jordan will be a fearless voice for progress, a relentless advocate for the people of Idaho, and a history-making trailblazer for Native American women.

“Democracy for America was proud to support Paulette Jordan in 2018 when she defied the naysayers and earned more votes from Idahoans than any Democrat has received for Governor in the state’s history. DFA members are even more excited to endorse Paulette this year because we know what her steadfast progressive values, her unwavering commitment to the people of Idaho, and crucial life experience as a Native American woman will bring to the halls of the U.S. Senate.

“Ready to fight for a transformative approach to healthcare that promotes access as a human right like Medicare for All and justice for every American who calls our country home, Paulette Jordan is running for U.S. Senate to put people first -- not corporate lobbyists or DC insiders. DFA was honored to stand with Paulette in 2018, we’re excited to fight alongside her today, and we can’t wait to work with her in Washington as she gets busy delivering for Idahoans.” -- Charles Chamberlain, Chair, Democracy for America

Statement from Paulette Jordan on receiving DFA’s endorsement in his race for U.S. Senate:

“It is with great honor that I thank Democracy for America for supporting our campaign to elect Idaho’s first Indigenous female U.S. Senator and the State’s first Democratic senator in over 40 years. DFA has consistently been on the front lines of our country's most important political and ideological battles supporting grassroots efforts to take meaningful progressive political action. Idahoans are calling out for a progressive champion in Washington who will prioritize people over politics and ensure that every single American gets the fair shot they deserve. Thank you for supporting the people of Idaho in this movement.” -- Paulette Jordan

The endorsement of Jordan is part of DFA’s 2020 “Flip the Senate” strategy, which aims to (a) hold Senate Republicans accountable for the role they played in helping cover up Donald Trump’s White House crimes and (b) end Republican control of a body that could halt inclusive populist reform, even with a Democrat in the White House.

To take the majority in the U.S. Senate, Democrats need to gain just four additional seats. Other U.S. Senate candidates that the grassroots progressive group has endorsed include Charles Booker in Kentucky, Royce West in Texas, Rev. Raphael Warnock in Georgia, Theresa Greenfield in Iowa, Jamie Harrison in South Carolina, Cal Cunningham in North Carolina and Betsy Sweet in Maine.

DFA has 3,964 members in Idaho and more than one million members nationwide.

VICTORY: DFA cheered by Dana Balter’s “clear cut victory” in NY-24 primary

Dana Balter just won the Democratic primary for the second time in New York’s 24th Congressional District setting her up for a rematch that will end three-term incumbent Rep. John Katko’s career in the U.S. House this November.

DFA, which also strongly supported her in her 2018 race, made Balter one of its first 2020 congressional endorsements in June 2019.

DFA CEO Yvette Simpson on Dana Balter’s primary victory in New York’s 24th Congressional District:

“Powered by unrelenting grassroots support, Dana Balter’s clear-cut victory in the Democratic primary should have Trump-aligned Republican John Katko very worried about his future in Congress.

“Democracy for America got behind Dana Balter early in this primary because we knew she’ll be an unbridled champion for progressive priorities in Congress and she was already building on her historically strong, people-powered 2018 campaign.

”A passionate advocate of Medicare for All, strong public schools, and safe communities, Dana Balter understands the fights we need to wage to ensure that everyone in central New York and our country has what they need to thrive -- and we couldn’t be more excited to be fighting alongside her.” -- Yvette Simpson, CEO, Democracy for America

VICTORY: Jamaal Bowman’s win NY-16 “one of the biggest upsets in recent progressive history”

In a major upset, Jamaal Bowman just won the Democratic primary in New York’s 16th Congressional District over 16-term corporate Democrat Rep. Eliot Engel.

Democracy for America endorsed Bowman’s bid for Congress in April.

DFA CEO Yvette Simpson on Jamaal Bowman’s upset primary victory in New York’s 16th Congressional District:

"Jamaal Bowman delivered one of the biggest upsets in recent progressive history in a victory that underscores that the future of the Democratic Party lies with leaders who are ready to fight for bold progressive reforms and help bring the life experiences of a new, more diverse generation of Americans to the halls of power.

“Jamaal Bowman and the grassroots army that powered his victory didn’t just defeat a 16-term incumbent beloved by the corporate Democratic establishment, they did it in the middle of a deadly pandemic when many of the traditional tactics grassroots progressives deploy, like door-to-door canvassing, were nearly impossible.

“Bowman’s success despite the odds and treacherous landscape is a testament to what’s possible when you have a candidate who knows his community, grassroots supporters who won’t let anything stand in the way of victory, and a bold progressive vision for the future of the country that’s time has come.

“Change has come to New York’s 16th District. All of us here at Democracy for America have been honored to stand with Jamaal Bowman as he fought to get us to this moment, and we look forward to fighting alongside him through November and beyond as he works to deliver on his promising future as a progressive leader in Congress.” -- Yvette Simpson, CEO, Democracy for America

VICTORY: DFA celebrates Mondaire Jones’ potentially “history-making” primary victory in NY-17

Mondaire Jones just won a wide-open Democratic primary in New York’s 17th Congressional District, setting him on the path to becoming the first Black openly gay man in Congress.

Democracy for America was an early Jones supporter, backing his run for Congress in December 2019.

DFA CEO Yvette Simpson on Mondaire Jones’s primary victory in New York’s 17th Congressional District:

“Tonight’s primary victory not only sets Mondaire Jones on the path to becoming the first Black, openly gay member of Congress, it also sets him up to be one of the U.S. House’s newest champions for progressive priorities like the Medicare for All, the Green New Deal, and robust criminal justice reform.

“Through the coronavirus crisis and recent week’s nationwide protests against police brutality and racial injustice, it’s been more clear than ever that Congress needs members who understand, first hand, the struggles that young people, working families, people of color, and LGBTQ+ people face every single day in our country.

“DFA endorsed Mondaire Jones early in this race because we knew he’d bring the life experience, perspective, and instincts of a progressive fighter that our country so desperately needs with him to Washington. We were honored to stand alongside him this primary, we look forward to helping deliver a history-making victory with him in November, and we can’t wait to fight for our shared progressive values right next to him over many years ahead.” -- Yvette Simpson, CEO, Democracy for America

VICTORY: AOC’s decisive win proves she’s “no fluke,” establishes her as a “political powerhouse”

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez just handily won the Democratic primary in New York’s 14th Congressional District setting her on the path to another general election victory this Fall.

DFA, which also supported AOC ahead of her historic 2018 primary victory, made Ocasio-Cortez’s reelection effort one of its first endorsements of the 2020 election cycle in March 2019.

DFA CEO Yvette Simpson on Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s primary reelection victory:

“Tonight, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez not only proved that her historic victory in 2018 was no fluke, she firmly established herself as a political powerhouse who will be critical to building a more progressive Democratic Party in the years ahead.

“Whether she’s tearing down the bigots on the right who attack her or pushing off the corporate apologists in her own party who’ve worked desperately against her for the last two years, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has remained laser-focused on two things: the communities she serves in New York’s 14th and the fight for justice in the United States.

“We were honored to stand with AOC in her first race, we were excited to continue supporting her through this critical reelection fight, and we are looking forward to fighting alongside her for many, many years to come.” -- Yvette Simpson, CEO, Democracy for America

As his campaign surges, DFA endorses Charles Booker for U.S. Senate in Kentucky

Today, Democracy for America (DFA) announced its endorsement of Charles Booker for U.S. Senate in Kentucky.

Booker is running against 2018 congressional candidate Amy McGrath in the June 23 primary that will determine Republican Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell’s Democratic opponent in November.

Statement from DFA CEO Yvette Simpson on the grassroots group’s endorsement of Charles Booker for U.S. Senate in Kentucky:

“Democracy for America is endorsing Charles Booker because he’s a real Democrat who can beat Mitch McConnell and isn’t afraid of taking a firm stand against Donald Trump, knows he would have voted against placing a man facing serious allegations of sexual assault on the U.S. Supreme Court, and is ready to fight for progressive ideas like Medicare for All.

“Especially in the wake of Breonna Taylor’s murder in Louisville, Charles Booker has proven himself to be a fearless visionary and boundlessly compassionate leader with the kind of life experience we desperately need in the U.S. Senate.

“When Senate insiders decide which candidate they’re going to bless with their endorsement and the millions in contributions that come with it, the critical experience that a young Black man who has lost family members to gun violence, like Charles Booker, might bring with him to the Senate never enters the equation. And, that narrow vision leaves Congress and our country weaker.

“Despite what DC insiders have told them, the people of Kentucky want something more than the same broken, spineless Democratic politics that’s allowed Mitch McConnell to drive his right-wing agenda in the Senate for 35 years.

“Momentum is growing behind Charles Booker in this race because he’s the bold breath of progressive air Kentucky knows our country needs in Washington, and that’s why Democracy for America couldn’t be more honored to stand with him today.” -- Yvette Simpson, CEO, Democracy for America

Statement from Charles Booker on receiving DFA’s endorsement in his race for U.S. Senate:

"I am so grateful for the endorsement of Democracy For America. The movement we are building here in Kentucky — for Medicare for All, a Green New Deal, ending racism and generational poverty — is a part of a bigger movement all across the country that DFA’s grassroots activists have been a critical part of. Together, we will win this race and transform America.” — Charles Booker, Kentucky Senate Candidate

The endorsement of Booker is part of DFA’s 2020 “Flip the Senate” strategy, which aims to (a) hold Senate Republicans accountable for the role they played in helping cover up Donald Trump’s White House crimes and (b) end Republican control of a body that could halt inclusive populist reform, even with a Democrat in the White House.

To take the majority in the U.S. Senate, Democrats need to gain just four additional seats. Other U.S. Senate candidates that the grassroots progressive group has endorsed include Royce West in Texas, Rev. Raphael Warnock in Georgia, Theresa Greenfield in Iowa, Jamie Harrison in South Carolina, Cal Cunningham in North Carolina and Betsy Sweet in Maine.

DFA has 9,158 members in Kentucky and more than one million members nationwide.

Democracy for America backs Candace Valenzuela for Congress in TX-24

Today, Democracy for America (DFA) announced its endorsement of Candace Valenzuela for Congress in Texas’ 24th Congressional District, a major Democratic target in the 2020 election.

Born and raised in Texas, Candace Valenzuela beat an eighteen-year incumbent in 2017 to become the first Latina and African-American woman to serve on the Carrollton-Farmers Branch school board.

When she’s elected to the U.S. House, Valenzuela will be the first Black Latina in Congress and is committed to taking on the systemic corruption that’s prevented real progress on universal health care, universal child care, criminal justice reform, and other laws that will lift up working families in Texas’ 24th Congressional District

Statement from DFA CEO Yvette Simpson on the grassroots progressive group’s endorsement of Valenzuela:

“Democracy for America is excited to endorse Candace Valenzuela for Congress because she knows how to win tough fights and has built the broad-based, local and national progressive coalition it will take to deliver a victory in one of the most hotly contested, majority-minority Congressional Districts in the 2020 election.

“A lifelong Texan and the daughter of U.S. Army veterans who struggled with homelessness during her childhood, the struggles that working families in Texas’ 24th District face every day aren’t unfamiliar, instead they’re part of the story that Candace will bring with her to Congress.

“A passionate opponent of the corporate corruption that defines Washington, Candace Valenzuela is running for Congress to fight for universal healthcare, robust criminal justice reform, and put the fight for affordable housing front and center on the national agenda.

“Democracy for America is honored to stand with Candace Valenzuela because she’s a committed advocate for progressive solutions who knows how to win in a critical battleground, congressional race like this one. We look forward to fighting alongside her all the way through November.” -- Yvette Simpson, CEO, Democracy for America

Statement from Candace Valenzuela on receiving DFA’s 2020 endorsement:

“I am so proud to have earned the support of DFA in this race. We must take on Washington corruption, which is why I am not taking a dime of corporate PAC money because voters should choose their elected officials, not special interests. I am running a strong, progressive campaign and look forward to fighting alongside DFA to get corruption out of Washington, tackle income inequality and ensure everyone gets equal justice under the law.”-- Candace Valenzuela, Candidate, Texas’ 24th Congressional District

DFA has 2,371 members in Texas 24th Congressional District, 67,545 in the state of Texas, and more than one million members nationwide.

Democracy for America endorses Tishaura Jones’ reelection bid for St. Louis (MO) Treasurer

Today, Democracy for America (DFA) announced its endorsement of Tishaura Jones in her race for reelection as Treasurer of the City of St. Louis, MO.

Democracy for America proudly supported Jones in her 2017 bid for St. Louis Mayor.

In 2020, the grassroots progressive political action committee is supporting Jones for reelection to a third term as St. Louis’ Treasurer as she works to build on her success banning the box, increasing the minimum wage to $15/hour in the city departments she oversees, and launching the nation’s second-largest children’s savings program, College Kids, which presently has over 16,000 children with over $1.1 million saved for their futures.

Statement from DFA CEO Yvette Simpson on the grassroots progressive group’s endorsement of Jones’ reelection bid:

“Democracy for America is excited to endorse Tishaura Jones in her race for reelection as St. Louis’ treasurer, because, over her first two terms, she has proven herself to be an unyielding champion for reform, a fierce advocate for the city she serves, and a leading light in municipal government for the progressive movement.

These strengths have been particularly pronounced during the COVID-19 crisis as Tishaura Jones has used her background in public health to take actions, like halting parking meter enforcement, to ensure the departments she supervises as Treasurer are leaders in the effort to halt the spread of the virus in St. Louis.

“From banning the checkbox that prevented so many with a criminal record from getting a job with city departments she runs, to making sure that every employee she manages received a living wage of at least $15/hr, Tishaura Jones’ has put our shared progressive values in action, delivered for the City of St. Louis, and we know she’s just getting started.

“Democracy for America is humbled to stand with Tishaura Jones in her race for reelection and we look forward to fighting alongside her through November and beyond.” -- Yvette Simpson, CEO, Democracy for America

Statement from Tishaura Jones on receiving DFA’s 2020 endorsement:

"As Treasurer, I was able to implement policies and advocate for many of the things DFA supports. During my tenure, I raised wages to $15/hour, I started the nation's 2nd largest children's savings account program, College Kids, and I have directly advocated for financial institutions to do more in low-income and black neighborhoods to shrink the racial wealth gap.” -- Tishaura Jones, Treasurer, City of St. Louis, MO

Democracy for America endorses Keeda Haynes for Congress in TN-5

Today, Democracy for America (DFA) announced its endorsement of Keeda Haynes in her Democratic primary fight against Rep. Jim Cooper, a corporate Democrat running for his 16th non-consecutive term in Congress in Tennessee’s 5th, a congressional district so blue it hasn’t elected a Republican since 1875.

A former Assistant Public Defender in the Metro Nashville Public Defender’s office, Keeda Haynes is passionate about her fight to fix our broken criminal justice system because she has personally experienced its failures. Just a few weeks after receiving her degree in criminal justice from Tennessee State University and becoming the first in her family to graduate from college, her parents dropped her off to serve seven years in a federal prison camp for a crime she did not commit.

Now the legal advisor for a non-profit founded by other formerly incarcerated women, Haynes is running for Congress as a fighter against injustice in all forms -- economic, racial, environmental, gender, healthcare -- that prevent so many in Tennessee’s 5th District from reaching their full potential.

Statement from DFA CEO Yvette Simpson on the grassroots progressive group’s endorsement of Haynes:

“Democracy for America is endorsing Keeda Haynes for Congress because it is time that Tennessee’s most reliably Democratic district is represented by someone who is committed to fighting for a bold progressive agenda rather than doing corporate interests bidding with “D” next to his name.

“We’re particularly excited to support Keeda Haynes because the struggles facing working families in Tennessee’s 5th Congressional District aren’t abstract public policy problems to her, they’re a reality she’s lived.

“Keeda Haynes is a passionate advocate for criminal justice reform because she’s experienced our broken system as both a public defender and as someone who was sentenced to seven in federal prison for a crime she did not commit. She understands her district’s housing affordability crisis because she’s struggled to find housing in her own neighborhood when prices continued to skyrocket. She supports Medicare for All and a Green New Deal, because she knows that light-touch responses to crises like COVID-19 and catastrophic climate change won’t cut it.

“Keeda Haynes gives Democrats in Tennesse’s 5th District the chance to replace the wildly out-of-step, Republican-lite Democrat who currently represents them, with a bold, visionary leader who is committed to their progressive values and will bring a range of life experience that is desperately needed in the halls of Congress. We’re honored to stand with Keeda Haynes in this primary and we look forward to fighting alongside her all the way through November.” -- Yvette Simpson, CEO, Democracy for America

Statement from Keeda Haynes on receiving DFA’s 2020 endorsement:
"This pandemic has exposed the very real, structural inequality in our system. Business as usual just won’t cut it anymore. As your Congresswoman, you can count on me to support health care for all, a criminal justice system that works for everyone, and housing as a fundamental, basic right.”-- Keeda Haynes, Candidate, Tennessee’s 5th Congressional District

DFA has 3,727 members in Tennessee’s 5th Congressional District, 18,883 in the state of Tennessee, and more than one million members nationwide.

Democracy for America backs Jim Harper for Congress in IN-1

Today, Democracy for America (DFA) announced its endorsement of Jim Harper for Congress in the open seat in Indiana’s firmly Democratic First Congressional District.

Born and raised in Northwest Indiana, Jim Harper has spent much of his professional career serving his community, from fighting to protect veterans seeking disability benefits for injuries they sustained during their service through the national non-profit he founded, to challenging Indiana’s continued use of voting machines without a voter-verified paper trail in the courts.

Electing Harper to this Democratic stronghold will ensure that voters in Indiana’s 1st have a proud progressive representing them in DC who is committed to fighting for Medicare for All, the Green New Deal, expanded voting rights, and robust criminal justice reform.
Statement from DFA CEO Yvette Simpson on the grassroots progressive group’s endorsement of Harper:

“Democracy for America is excited to endorse Jim Harper in this critical open-seat contest because it’s more important than ever that, in deep blue, economically diverse districts like Indiana’s 1st, Democrats have elected leaders in Washington who are ready to stand up and fight for our shared progressive values.

“Jim Harper isn’t just looking to go to Congress with a “D” next to his name to vote the party line, he wants to serve his constituents as an unabashed champion for working families who is ready to fight for progressive priorities like Medicare for All, a Green New Deal, expanded voting rights, and robust criminal justice reform.

“While the field of candidates running in this race is large, Jim Harper is the clear choice for Northwest Indiana voters who want a committed progressive leader representing them in Congress. All of us here at Democracy for America couldn’t be more honored to stand with him.” -- Yvette Simpson, CEO, Democracy for America

Statement from Jim Harper on receiving DFA’s 2020 endorsement:
"I am proud to be endorsed by Democracy for America. Since Gov. Dean founded DFA in 2004, it has driven the conversation in progressive politics. Democracy for America endorses Royce West for U.S. Senate in Texas

Today, Democracy for America (DFA) announced its endorsement of Royce West for U.S. Senate in Texas. West is running against 2018 congressional candidate M.J. Hegar in the July 14 primary run-off that will determine Republican U.S. Sen. John Cornyn’s Democratic opponent in November.

Statement from DFA CEO Yvette Simpson on the grassroots group’s endorsement of Royce West for U.S. Senate in Texas:

“Only one candidate in July’s Senate run-off in Texas is a tested fighter for progressive priorities like criminal justice reform, common-sense gun legislation, and a fair wage, and that’s why Democracy for America is excited to endorse Royce West for U.S. Senate.

“Not only does Royce West give Texas Democrats an opportunity to nominate a candidate who has won office before, but when he’s elected he’ll be the first African American to represent Texas, an emerging majority-minority state, in the U.S. Senate and potentially just the fourth Black member of Congress’ upper chamber in Jan. 2021.

“Royce is DFA’s choice for U.S. Senate in Texas because he’s spent 27 years fighting for change in the Lone Star State, repeatedly delivered for the community he’s served, and will add a critical perspective from a rapidly changing state to the Senate’s Democratic caucus. We’re honored to stand with Royce West ahead of July’s primary run-off and we look forward to fighting alongside him all the way through November.” -- Yvette Simpson, CEO, Democracy for America

Statement from Royce West on receiving DFA’s endorsement in his race for U.S. Senate:

“I am honored to receive the endorsement of Democracy for America.

“For 27 years, I have fought for the best interests of all Texans when it comes to healthcare, a woman’s right to choose, public education and more.

“As a U.S. Senator, I will continue to work on these issues, and others including climate change, making college affordable for every American, and working for a $15 minimum wage.

“We must continue to work for positive, progressive change in our country, and I will do that as your next U.S. Senator from Texas.” -- Royce West

The endorsement of West is part of DFA’s 2020 “Flip the Senate” strategy, which aims to (a) hold Senate Republicans accountable for the role they played in helping cover up Donald Trump’s White House crimes and (b) end Republican control of a body that could halt inclusive populist reform, even with a Democrat in the White House.

To take the majority in the U.S. Senate, Democrats need to gain just four additional seats and West is the seventh 2020 candidate to receive DFA’s endorsement. Raphael Warnock in Georgia, Theresa Greenfield in Iowa, Jamie Harrison in South Carolina, Cal Cunningham in North Carolina and Betsy Sweet in Maine.

Democracy for America endorses William Cunningham for Congress in NJ-2

Today, Democracy for America (DFA) announced its endorsement of William Cunningham in his fight to defeat Rep. Jeff Van Drew, who is now running for reelection as a Trump Republican after winning as Democrat in 2018.

While William Cunningham grew up poor in South Jersey and spent half of his high school career homeless, he went on to earn an Ivy League degree, spent two years as a policy staffer for Sen. Cory Booker, and served as a Chief Investigator for the late U.S. House Chairman Elijah Cummings. Cunningham is the unabashed progressive in the race to defeat Rep. Van Drew, championing Medicare for All, the Green New Deal, and a robust response to the systemic racism built into our broken criminal justice system.

Statement from DFA CEO Yvette Simpson on the grassroots progressive group’s endorsement of Cunningham:

“It was clear that Rep. Jeff Van Drew was going to be a reactionary nightmare even before he got to Congress, but it’s hard to overstate the scale of his betrayal when he decided to ditch the South Jersey Democrats who helped elect him in 2018 to embrace Donald Trump a little more than a year later.

“Democracy for America is excited to endorse William Cunningham, not just because he’ll be better Representative than a traitor like Van Drew, but because he’ll be a massive improvement over Van Drew who’ll fight for bold, progressive reforms like Medicare for All, a Green New Deal, voting rights, and criminal justice reform.

“Also, as a member of the LGBTQ community whose family struggled with homelessness and a former congressional staffer, the lived and professional experience William Cunningham will bring with him to Congress is critically needed.

“William Cunningham gives South Jersey voters an opportunity to remedy the mistake Democrats made in 2018 by helping elect Jeff Van Drew and replace him with someone who understands struggle, perseverance, and our shared progressive values. Democracy for America is honored to stand with William Cunningham in this primary and we look forward to fighting alongside him all the way to victory in November.” -- Yvette Simpson, CEO, Democracy for America

Statement from William Cunningham on receiving DFA’s 2020 endorsement:

"I am honored to receive Democracy for America's endorsement. As the real progressive in my race, it means the world to me to have the backing of an organization driven by the vision of progressive pioneer Howard Dean. Congress must better reflect the American populace, and I am grateful that Democracy for America values diversity in supporting the next generation of leaders. Together, we will win this race and restore this seat to the people Jeff Van Drew stole it from." -- William Cunningham, Candidate, New Jersey’s 2nd Congressional District

Holley’s endorsement is DFA’s first endorsement in a race for Lieutenant Governor in the 2020 election cycle and one of the grassroots organization’s key endorsements in the critical swing state of North Carolina ahead of November’s election.

A Raleigh native and the member of one of the first desegregated classes at Wake County Public School’s Enloe High School, Yvonne Lewis Holley has spent her life serving North Carolinians as a state employee, the Director of Minority Affairs for WRAL-TV, and, more recently, a four-term member of the North Carolina State House. In the State Capitol, Holley has been an outsized voice in fights for affordable housing and a living wage and against food insecurity.

Statement from DFA CEO Yvette Simpson on the group’s endorsements of Holley for Lieutenant Governor in North Carolina:

“Over four terms in State House, Yvonne Lewis Holley has fought to improve housing, healthcare, and education for all North Carolinians, and Democracy for America is thrilled to endorse her because we know as Lieutenant Governor she’ll be able to do even more.

“In the richest country in the world, no American should struggle to access affordable housing, healthy food, workforce training, or reliable transportation. The trailblazing Affordable Living Initiative that Yvonne has put at the very center of her campaign moves us toward that ideal and provides the kind of bold, progressive plan we need to see replicated all across the country.

“In this race and across her career in public life, Yvonne Lewis Holley has put the needs of working families first and put forward the kind of vision necessary to ensure that everyone can thrive in the Tar Heel State. We’re honored to stand with Yvonne Lewis Holley in her fight to become North Carolina’s next Lieutenant Governor and deliver on the inspiring people-focused, progressive agenda that’s powering her campaign.” -- Yvette Simpson, CEO, Democracy for America

Democracy for America endorses Jamaal Bowman for Congress NY-16 primary

Today, Democracy for America (DFA) announced its endorsement of Jamaal Bowman in his Democratic primary fight against Rep. Eliot Engel, the 16-term corporate Democrat who currently represents New York’s deep blue 16th Congressional District.

Born and raised in New York City, Jamaal Bowman is a champion for social justice, children, and working families who serves as the founding principal of Cornerstone Academy for Social Action (CASA), one of the best public middle schools in the city.

In the U.S. House, Bowman is committed to fighting for Medicare for All, a Green New Deal, robust criminal justice reform, and affordable housing.

Statement from DFA CEO Yvette Simpson on the grassroots progressive group’s endorsement of Bowman:

“Democracy for America is excited to endorse Jamaal Bowman for Congress because he’s spent his career, both in the classroom and as the founding principal of one of the best public middle schools in New York City, fighting and delivering for the students, teachers, and parents he’s served.

“For low-income and working-class people in New York and across the country, politics as usual just isn’t working -- and things won’t change if keep on electing the same politicians, controlled by the same corporate interests, over and over again.

“Jamaal Bowman is right on the issues -- he’s ready to fight for Medicare for All, a Green New Deal, just immigration reform, and affordable housing. But just as importantly, Bowman is committed to confronting and correcting past wrongs, like the 1994 Crime Bill and the No Child Left Behind Act, that his corporate-funded opponent voted for over his more than 30 years in Congress.

“From the people-powered, small-dollar-donor-funded campaign he’s running to the fights he’s willing to take on in Washington, Jamaal Bowman won’t just be a significant progressive improvement over the corporate Democrat he’s looking to replace, he’ll be a passionate change agent in the U.S. House and we couldn’t be more honored to be standing with him.” -- Yvette Simpson, CEO, Democracy for America

Statement from Jamaal Bowman on receiving DFA’s 2020 endorsement:

"I am so proud to be endorsed by Democracy For America. With DFA's grassroots activists across the country, we'll build a movement for Medicare for All, a Green New Deal, ending mass incarceration and mass deportation, foreign policy based in peace and diplomacy, and ending oligarchy in our nation." -- Jamaal Bowman, Candidate, New York’s 16th Congressional District

Bowman is just the fourth Democratic primary challenger DFA in the 2020 election cycle. DFA endorsed Marie Newman (IL-3) early in her victorious primary challenge of Rep. Dan Lipinski, backed Jessica Cisneros (TX-28) in her strong showing against another anti-choice Democrat in her Super Tuesday primary, and recently came out in support of McKayla Wilkes’ (MD-5) primary challenge of House Majority Whip Steny Hoyer.

DFA has 4,219 members in New York’s 16th Congressional District, 122,091 in the state of New York, and more than one million members nationwide.

Democracy for America backs Jeff Merkley for reelection to the U.S. Senate

Today, Democracy for America (DFA) announced its endorsement of Sen. Jeff Merkley for reelection to the U.S. Senate in Oregon.

DFA was a strong supporter of Sen. Merkley in his first reelection bid in 2014 and, over the last six years, has worked closely with him on everything from progressive fights for filibuster reform and Medicare for All to battles against war with Iran and Donald Trump’s right-wing Supreme Court nominees.

Merkley is DFA’s first endorsement of a 2020 U.S. Senate incumbent.

So far this cycle, DFA has endorsed six 2020 Senate challengers including Cal Cunningham in North Carolina, Teresa Tomlinson and Rev. Raphael Warnock in Georgia, Theresa Greenfield in Iowa, Jaime Harrison in South Carolina, and Betsy Sweet in Maine. To take the Senate majority, Democrats must add four to their current 47 seats.

Statement from DFA CEO Yvette Simpson on the grassroots group’s endorsement of Sen. Jeff Merkley’s Oregon reelection bid:

“Sen. Jeff Merkley is one the strongest, most reliable champions that progressives have in the U.S. Senate and we couldn’t be more excited to support him for reelection this fall.

“Whether we’ve been pushing for progressive priorities like Medicare for All or battling back the worst parts of Donald Trump’s agenda, Sen. Merkley hasn’t just been an ally for our movement, he’s been a strong champion and a proactive partner in our fight for progressive change.

“It’s absolutely critical that Democrats retake the majority of the U.S. Senate this year. That means winning four additional seats, but it also means holding on to the seats we already have, especially ones held by reliable partners like Sen. Merkley in progressive states like Oregon.

“Democracy for America is honored to stand with Sen. Jeff Merkley in the U.S. Senate and in his campaign for reelection in 2020” -- Yvette Simpson, CEO, Democracy for America

Statement from Sen. Jeff Merkley on receiving DFA’s endorsement:

"I'm grateful for Democracy for America's endorsement and I look forward to continuing our shared work as we tackle the unprecedented challenges ahead. Grassroots movements have the power to change this country from the inside out. We need to get out the vote like we never have before, elect progressive leaders who are competent, compassionate and will do everything in their power to fight for the people, not the powerful. We can pull our country out of these dark times if we come together and fight with everything we have. I'm with you every step of the way. Let's do this!" -- Sen. Jeff Merkley

DFA praises Sanders “transformational” campaign, is “100% committed” to ensuring Biden beats Trump

Sen. Bernie Sanders just announced the suspension of his 2020 campaign for President.

Democracy for America endorsed Sanders in 2016 and fought along his side from early in the campaign all the way to the convention. The grassroots progressive group endorsed Sanders again prior to the Super Tuesday contests following a vote of DFA members.

Statement from Democracy for America Chair Charles Chamberlain on the suspension of Bernie Sanders 2020 campaign:

“Both in 2016 and in 2020, Bernie Sanders built a grassroots movement that brought millions into the political process, led a progressive transformation of the national policy debate, and ushered in the leadership of the next generation of progressive changemakers.

“Put simply, over the last five years, Bernie Sanders has fundamentally altered the range of what is politically possible in American politics and the progressive movement is stronger now than it has ever been because of it.

“In the wake of the COVID-19 crisis, it’s more clear than ever that our country needs the political revolution that Bernie Sanders has been calling for not just over his last two campaigns, but over his entire political life. While we’re disappointed today, we refuse to cave to the cynicism that remains the real enemy of progress.

"Specifically, we take heart in the fact that, in exit polls in state after state, from California to Mississippi, Democrats are unified behind the big, bold progressive agenda on issues, like Medicare for All, that fueled Bernie Sanders in this race.

“At the same time, Democratic voters, including many progressives, backed Joe Biden largely because they believed he was the candidate best positioned to defeat Donald Trump.

“While DFA members disagreed, Democratic voters have spoken clearly through this primary process and, now that it’s over, we are 100% committed to doing everything we can to ensure that Joe Biden beats Donald Trump.

“And, after Joe Biden's wins, as we will make sure he does, the progressive movement will push him every single day to be the progressive president America demands and our challenging times require.” — Charles Chamberlain, Chair, Democracy for America

Democracy for America endorses Mike Siegel for Congress in TX-10

Today, Democracy for America (DFA) announced its endorsement of Mike Siegel in his fight to take on eight-term Republican incumbent Michael McCaul in Texas’ 10th Congressional District.

A former public school teacher and employment lawyer, Siegel came within inches of beating McCaul in the R+9 congressional district in 2018, and won the first round of the 2020 Democratic primary with 44% of the vote-- more than 11 percentage points over his nearest opponents. Siegel supports Medicare for All, a Green New Deal, criminal justice reform, and a just immigration system.

Statement from DFA CEO Yvette Simpson on the grassroots progressive group’s endorsement of Siegel:

“Democracy for America isn’t just endorsing Mike Siegel in Texas’ 10th District because he nearly beat his eight-term Republican opponent in 2018 or because he won the first round of the Democratic primary by more than 11 points.

While it's clear that Mike Siegel is well poised to turn Texas’ 10th blue, Democracy for America is endorsing Mike Siegel for Congress because we know that when he gets there he’ll be an unequivocal, progressive champion for working families in Texas.

“Mike Siegel understands that the problems we face, from the tattered healthcare system that the COVID-19 crisis has exposed to the climate emergency that looms on the horizon.

But even more importantly, Mike Siegel has seen those challenges and consistently advocated for the bold, progressive solutions we need to address them. That’s why Mike has been a fierce advocate in this campaign for Medicare for All, a Green New Deal, and robust reforms to our broken criminal justice and immigration systems, and that’s why we’re confident he’ll continue to fight for them in the U.S. House.

“Democracy for America is excited to stand with Mike Siegel in his race for Congress because he’s spent his life, in the classroom and the courtroom, fighting to make sure that everyone has a fair shot. We know Mike has what it takes to turn Texas’ 10th blue and take that fight to DC. -- Yvette Simpson, CEO, Democracy for America

Statement from Mike Siegel on receiving DFA’s 2020 endorsement:

"Now more than ever, America needs progressive leaders who will fight for the people and against the corrupt status quo.

“Thank you, Democracy for America, for your endorsement and solidarity. We are fighting for a shared vision: universal healthcare through Medicare for All; a national jobs program and a Green New Deal; criminal justice reform and justice for immigrants; voting rights; LGBTQIA equality; equal opportunity.

“The time has passed for asking; we are demanding real change NOW." -- Mike Siegel, Candidate, Texas’ 10th Congressional District

Democracy for America CEO Yvette Simpson released the following statement RE: the COVID-19 Stimulus deal announced in the U.S. Senate earlier today:

“The latest Senate deal is Congress' third attempt to respond to COVID-19, yet it doesn't go nearly far enough to deal with both the immediate needs of working families and the preconditions that led to this crisis.

“Specifically, Congress must do more to expand immediate cash assistance and make it available to all; expand Medicaid funding; expand paid sick leave to all workers; provide immediate student debt relief; provide sufficient funding to cover all medical care associated with the virus; and make sure those on the front line of this health crisis in our hospitals, grocery stores, pharmacies, and delivery trucks receive the support they need.

“We recognize the work that Democratic Senate leaders have done to reach a deal that is far better than the right-wing grab bag of giveaways to corporations and powerful interests Republicans first presented. The additional month of unemployment coverage for those affected by COVID-19, stimulus checks for some workers, and funding increases for hospitals and small businesses were necessary improvements, but the final bill is still not sufficient to meet the scale of this unprecedented, impending health and economic crisis.

“We urge members of the U.S. Senate to fight to make sure their Republicans colleagues don't weaken this legislation further and U.S. House members to continue improving it before any final vote on passage.” -- Yvette Simpson, CEO, Democracy for America

Senators Burr and Loeffler Must Resign!

Weeks before Americans across the country were homeschooling their kids, stocking up on medicine, and filing for unemployment, Republican Senators Richard Burr and Kelly Loeffler decided to use their inside information to sell off millions of dollars in stocks.

It’s outrageous. If you’re as angry as we are, take a moment to read below and add your name to our joint petition with Robert Reich calling for Burr and Loeffler’s immediate resignations.

COVID-19 Legislation Resources

It can be difficult to keep track of the facts about what is and is not in the varying House and Senate bills to tackle the Coronavirus response… as well as what should be. DFA has collected some resources to help sift through these complex pieces of legislation.

The Progressive Caucus Action Fund, along with several partner organizations, has put together a very useful comparison of the current Republican Senate vs. Democratice House bills in this 12 page PDF document

DFA and a large coalition of progressive partners has signed onto a guideline of Five Principles of Just COVID-19 Relief and Stimulus

Democracy for America endorses Jon Hoadley’s campaign to turn Michigan’s 6th blue

Today, Democracy for America (DFA) announced its endorsement of Jon Hoadley in his fight against 17-term Republican incumbent Fred Upton in Michigan’s 6th Congressional District.

A three-term Michigan State Legislator, Jon Hoadley easily won DFA’s support in his first race for the Michigan State House in 2014. In Lansing, Hoadley has distinguished himself as a progressive champion who is ready to fight for equality, non-partisan redistricting reform, minimum wage increases, paid sick leave, and a host of reforms key to reducing money’s influence on politics.

In his race for Congress, Hoadley has pledged to fight for Medicare for All, the Green New Deal, robust criminal justice reform, and voting rights.

Statement from DFA CEO Yvette Simpson on the grassroots progressive group’s endorsement of Hoadley:

“Democracy for America is excited to support Jon Hoadley for Congress because we know he has the experience, grit, and firm commitment to bold progressive change that it takes to beat a 17-term incumbent like Fred Upton and deliver for Michigan’s working families.

“A lifelong progressive changemaker, we know Jon will fight for big, bold progressive ideas, like Medicare for All and a Green New Deal in DC because we’ve seen him do just that in Lansing.

“We’re particularly passionate about Jon’s race because we know he’s running precisely the kind of community-centered, people-powered campaign that Democrats need to inspire the grassroots, bring out new voters, and open up conversations with unexpected allies ready for change.

“Jon Hoadly gets it. He understands the fights we need to wage, the stands progressives need to take, and the kind of coalition we need to build to defeat Fred Upton and flip Michigan’s 6th District blue.” -- Yvette Simpson, CEO, Democracy for America

Statement from Jon Hoadley on receiving DFA’s 2020 endorsement:

"Howard Dean's campaign for President was one of the first times I realized how powerful we are when we work together. Much like Dean's vision of a 50-state organizing strategy, the idea of organizing everywhere so all voices are included and advocating for policies that directly help people are core values of why I'm running for Congress.

"I'm deeply thankful for the support of DFA, and even in challenging times I know I can count on DFA members across the country to come together." -- Jon Hoadley, Candidate, Michigan’s 6th Congressional District

DFA has 3,656 members in Michigan's 6th Congressional District, 52,781 in the state of Michigan, and more than one million members nationwide.

DFA celebrates State’s Attorney Kim Foxx’s 2020 reelection primary victory in Cook County, IL

Tonight, Cook County State's Attorney Kim Foxx won the hotly contested Democratic Primary in her 2020 reelection bid.

Democracy for America was a strong supporter of Foxx during her 2016 election and backed her once again for reelection this year.

DFA CEO Yvette Simpson on Cook County State's Attorney Kim Foxx’s 2020 primary victory:

“Back in 2016, Democracy for America proudly endorsed Kim Foxx for her first election for Cook County State's Attorney because we knew she’d be an unbridled champion for criminal justice reform who was willing to take on the status quo and right historic inequities.

“State’s Attorney Foxx won a hard-fought victory tonight because of her transformative work implementing bond and cannabis reform, vacating wrongful convictions, and focusing her office’s resources on keeping communities safe from violent crime.

“We were honored to stand with State’s Attorney Kim Fox in 2016 and we were excited to fight alongside her once again in this primary.

“At the same time, this victory is also about so much more than a single race for State’s Attorney. Social and economic progress is impossible without a justice system that finally begins living up to our country’s promise of equality under the law.

“The reelection victory of a bold reformer like State’s Attorney Foxx, not only ensures that the progress our movement is making in places like Cook County can continue to march forward, it adds a boost of momentum behind our efforts to continue the fight for criminal justice reform all across the country.” -- Yvette Simpson, Chief Executive Officer, Democracy for America

IL-03: DFA celebrates Marie Newman’s primary victory over corporate Dem incumbent

This evening, Marie Newman beat anti-choice Democrat Dan Lipinski in the closely watched Democratic primary in Illinois 3rd Congressional District.

Democracy for America endorsed Newman in tonight’s race in April 2019, making her the grassroots group’s first non-incumbent endorsement of the 2020 cycle. DFA also supported Newman in her tight race against Lipinski in 2018.

DFA CEO Yvette Simpson on Marie Newman’s primary victory in the IL-03 Democratic Primary:

“Marie Newman’s primary win tonight is a tremendous victory for progressives and everyone who believes the Democratic party should be unequivocal in its support for abortion rights, LGBTQ equality, and the fight for economic justice.

“For years, anti-choice corporate Democrats like Dan Lipinski have given Republicans cover as they’ve sought to roll back a woman’s right to choose, tried to deny the human rights of the LGBTQ community, and attacked the idea of a $15 minimum wage. With Marie Newman’s victory over Dan Lipinski tonight the fiction that there is bipartisan support for Republican’s backward agenda is over.

“Democracy for America was proud to stand with Marie Newman in 2018, we were honored to stand with her early in this 2020 race, and we can’t wait to fight alongside her for Medicare for All, a Green New Deal, and robust criminal justice reform through November and beyond.” -- Yvette Simpson, Chief Executive Officer, Democracy for America

Democracy for America endorses McKayla Wilkes for Congress in MD-5 primary battle

Today, Democracy for America (DFA) announced its endorsement of McKayla Wilkes in her Democratic primary fight against corporate Democrat Majority Whip Steny Hoyer in Maryland’s deep blue 5th Congressional District.

Born at Greater Southeast Community Hospital in Washington, DC, McKayla Wilkes was raised in Suitland, MD and intimately understands the struggle that low-income families face in Maryland’s 5th District because she’s experienced it herself.

While McKayla knew that beating a powerful incumbent heavily financed by moneyed interests would be tough, she decided to run to help bring fresh leadership and the perspective of a young, working-class woman of color to Washington’s corridors of power. In this race, she’s pledged to fight for affordable housing, Medicare for All, the Green New Deal, criminal justice reform, expanded voting rights, and humane immigration policy.

Statement from DFA CEO Yvette Simpson on the grassroots progressive group’s endorsement of Wilkes:

“Born to a single mother still grieving her father’s unexpected death and raised with the help of welfare benefits and a close extended family, the struggles low-income families in Maryland’s 5th District face aren’t an abstraction for McKayla Wilkes, they’re part of her life story. That’s why Democracy for America is so excited to endorse her race for Congress.

“The fact is, if the Democratic Party is going to be the champion working families need in Washington, we need leaders in Congress who are closer to the pain, not simply closer to the powerful.

“McKayla Wilkes fights for criminal justice reform because she’s seen first hand how our current system fails young people. She supports Medicare for All because her own cousin became visually impaired after struggling to pay for insulin. She’s ready to fight to strengthen the social safety net because as a young, working-class woman of color, McKayla knows what each program means for a family struggling to make ends meet.

“In 2020, progressives need to fight to hold the House, take back the White House, and return the Senate to Democratic control. However, the political transformation our country so desperately needs won’t happen if the Democratic Party continues to be dominated by the same corporate Democratic leaders who are beholden to powerful corporate interests and unwilling to challenge the broken status quo.

“McKayla Wilkes will bring a fresh perspective, a bold vision, and proximity to the pain of working families that we desperately need on Capitol Hill -- and that’s why Democracy for America is honored to stand with her in this primary.” -- Yvette Simpson, CEO, Democracy for America

Statement from McKayla Wilkes on receiving DFA’s 2020 endorsement:

"I am so honored to be endorsed by Democracy for America and stand alongside fellow candidates like Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Ilhan Omar, and Rashida Tlaib. DFA’s fight for progressive policies, diverse representation, and a government that works for ordinary people is exactly why I got into this race. Together, we can build the America we deserve.” -- McKayla Wilkes, Candidate, Maryland 5th Congressional District

Wilkes is just the third Democratic primary challenger DFA has endorsed ahead of 2020. In 2019, DFA endorsed Marie Newman (IL-3) in her primary challenge to Rep. Dan Lipinski that’s going to voters tomorrow and Jessica Cisneros who narrowly lost a House primary challenge against another anti-choice Democrat on Super Tuesday.
DFA has 3,108 members in Maryland’s 5th Congressional District, 29,789 in the state of Maryland, and more than one million members nationwide.
