Georgia State Senate, District 47
Dawn Johnson has spent her career serving others. A deputy sheriff for six years, she swore to uphold and defend the Constitution of Georgia and protect its citizens. After obtaining her Master’s Degree, Dawn left law enforcement and became the third generation of a family to work in nonprofits that serve people with developmental disabilities. For the last sixteen years, Dawn has been a passionate legislative advocate for Medicaid and integrated services for people with disabilities and serves on several boards and the Georgia State Rehabilitation Council.
Dawan was angered by the socially regressive legislation that the state was focusing on, instead of helping struggling citizens. Georgia seemed more concerned that a gay couple might get a wedding cake than the fact that 1.9 million Georgians don’t have health insurance or that 37% of Georgians were low income. The elected officials weren’t doing anything to help struggling families like Daws’s have a better life. Wages have not kept pace with expenses and families are struggling to make ends meet. Dawn believes that we must have an economy that works for everyone, not just the wealthy.
Dawn is running to help families like her own, people who were hit hard by the recession, medical bills, and student loan payments. She wants to fully fund public schools to have equitable and quality educations for all students. She believes that we must bring about real criminal justice reform and invest in communities of color, provide resources to police departments to push community policing, and bring an end to the poverty that causes crime. Dawn believes Georgia does better when Georgians do better. Georgia has been great to corporations, but not so great to its citizens. Georgians need accessible and affordable health care, jobs that pay a living wage, a modern infrastructure, quality educations, and safe schools. Georgia needs representatives who will put an end to socially regressive policies and focus on building economic opportunity for all Georgians.
