Sign the petition: Stop Brett Kavanaugh

Christine Blasey Ford courageously shared her story of sexual assault and attempted rape by Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh when the two were in high school and she was just fifteen years old.

We knew from the start that Kavanaugh was unfit to serve on the Supreme Court, given his extreme political positions along with misleading and false statements during Senate testimony.

But this news made it crystal clear: we must stop this dangerous man from being confirmed to a lifetime on our nation's highest court.

Sign Democracy for America’s petition telling the every U.S. Senator -- Republicans and Democrats -- to do the right thing and reject Kavanaugh by blocking him from being confirmed to the Supreme Court.

DFA: Kavanaugh’s alleged role in an attempted rape is “fundamentally disqualifying”

This afternoon Christine Blasey Ford courageously told her story of Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh's role in an attempt to rape her when she was fifteen

Democracy for America's Karli Wallace, the lead of DFA's #StopKavanaugh campaign, responds to Kavanaugh's alleged role in an attempted rape:

"The story bravely told today about Brett Kavanaugh's alleged role in an attempted rape of a 15-year-old girl isn't just stomach-turning, it's a fundamentally disqualifying action for anyone tasked with serving justice, let alone someone up for lifetime appointment to the U.S. Supreme Court.

"To be clear, Brett Kavanaugh's political positions and repeated use of misleading and false statements during Senate testimony already rendered him unfit to be a Supreme Court justice, but today's revelations make it crystal clear that he had no business being nominated in the first place.

"The only acceptable response to news of Brett Kavanaugh's alleged role in an attempted rape is for every single member of the U.S. Senate to commit to rejecting his nomination to the Supreme Court and demand that the White House immediately rescind it.

"Our country also owes a profound debt of gratitude to Christine Blasey Ford for deciding to publicly share her story. No survivor of sexual assault owes the story of their struggle to anyone, period. Yet, the grace and courage that Christine Blasey Ford has shown in deciding to do so, especially in light of the violations of consent that played a role in compelling her, is something we all should honor." -- Karli Wallace, Senior Digital Manager & lead of DFA's #StopKavanaugh Campaign, Democracy for America

DFA backs O’Rourke for Senate in Texas, Bell (TX-14), Haaland (NM-1), Scholten (IA-4) for Congress

Today, Democracy for America (DFA) announced its endorsements of Beto O'Rourke for United States Senate in Texas and Adrienne Bell (TX-14), Deb Haaland (NM-1), and J.D. Scholten (IA-4) for the United States House of Representatives. All four are running bold, inclusive populist campaigns that place their support for Medicare for All, in particular, at the center of their campaigns.

Democracy for America is a member-driven, people-powered progressive political organization with 1 million members across the country and a total of 78,232 spread across the state of Texas, Iowa's 4th, and New Mexico's 1st Congressional Districts.

Chair Jim Dean on DFA's endorsement in these four key federal general election races:

"In 2018, Democrats have nominated a series of trailblazing warriors for inclusive populist priorities all across the country who will be positively critical to helping us seize the majority of the U.S. House and have a shot at retaking control of the Senate.

"Today, we're particularly excited to announce our endorsements of Beto O'Rourke for U.S. Senate in Texas and Adrienne Bell, Deb Haaland and J.D. Scholten for the U.S. House in Texas' 14th, New Mexico's 1st, and Iowa's 4th Congressional Districts, respectively.

"Beto O'Rourke (U.S. Senate - Texas) has distinguished himself this cycle not only by running one of the most impressive grassroots campaigns Texas has ever seen, but by taking unequivocal, progressive stands on immigrant rights and racial justice. Beto O'Rourke's people-powered campaign and boldness has not only brought tens of thousands of new and frequently ignored voters into the political process, it's forced Ted Cruz, one of the most loathed fringe-right characters in Donald Trump's Washington swamp, into a single-digit race.

"Adrienne Bell (TX-14) is a Houstonian and grassroots organizer who has spent years working to turn Texas blue on Barack Obama's 2012 campaign and at Battleground Texas. When she's elected to Congress this year, not only will she be the first Black woman sent to represent Texas' 14th District, she'll be a trusted leader in the fight to pass Medicare for All, protect abortion rights, deliver on criminal justice reform, and make sure that every student has a chance to thrive in local public schools.

"Deb Haaland (NM-1) has spent years working on the ground to deliver for New Mexico's working families. She went on to lead New Mexico's Democratic Party where she eliminated a seven-year debt and helped flip the state legislature from Red to Blue. In Congress, Deb Haaland will make history as the first Native American woman in the U.S. House or Senate, and she'll also be a passionate champion for gun violence prevention legislation, the Black and Native Lives Matter movements, and a New Mexico that harnesses its national resources while decreasing its reliance on fossil fuels.

"J.D. Scholten (IA-4) is a 5th generation Iowan who was born in the town of Nevada, grew up in Sioux City, and went on to play baseball professionally in seven countries around the world. A first-time candidate who has visited all 39 counties of the 4th District in his Winnebago RV "Sioux City Sue," J.D. Scholten has a lifelong commitment to social justice and will stand tall for Medicare for All, building a sustainable rural economy, and civility in Washington. If there's any progressive equipped to defeat a hate-fueled, right-winger like Steve King this cycle, it's J.D. Scholten.

"Fighting to represent red and blue terrain from the plains and coasts of Texas to the valleys of New Mexico and the fields of Iowa, Beto O'Rourke, Adrienne Bell, Deb Haaland, and J.D. Scholten aren't just running to make majorities in Washington, they're running because they believe that healthcare is human right and we deserve a healthcare system that reflects that reality. Democracy for America is honored to fight alongside them for the country every American deserves this November and beyond." -- Jim Dean, Chair of Democracy for America

As a part of its work in the 2018 election cycle, DFA intends to raise and spend more than $12 million in support of progressive candidates, make more than 2 million voter contacts, and support more than 250 candidates nationwide -- like O'Rourke, Bell, Haaland, and Scholten-- in running inclusive populist campaigns committed to turning out the New American Majority of people of color and progressive white voters in November.

Democracy for America is a member-driven, people-powered progressive PAC with more than one million members nationwide committed to taking on income inequality, money in politics, and structural racism. Since its 2004 founding, DFA members have raised and contributed more than $54 million and made more than 21.9 million volunteer calls to help successfully elect 917 progressive candidates nationwide.

VICTORY: DFA hails reformer Rollins’ victory in Suffolk County (MA) District Attorney primary

Tonight, Rachel Rollins won her race for Suffolk County (MA) District Attorney

Rollins was endorsed by Democracy for America, the first national progressive organization to back her, as a part of its slate of "Criminal Justice Reform Champions."

Statement from Democracy for America Chair Jim Dean on Rachel Rollins' victory in the race for Suffolk County (MA) District Attorney:

"Rachel Rollins win in her race for Suffolk County (MA) District Attorney is a critical victory for everyone who believes that leadership change is a critical component of the criminal justice reform our country desperately needs.

"Like the victories of Kimm Fox in Illinois' Cook County, Larry Krasner in Philadelphia, and, more recently, Wesley Bell in Missouri, Rachel Rollins' win underscores the hunger voters have for prosecutors who have a heartfelt commitment to justice not in some abstract, academic sense of the word, but in the lived experiences of survivors, perpetrators, the accused, and the communities we share.

"The fight to end cash bail, mass incarceration, and the systemic racism undergirding much of our criminal justice system doesn't start in Washington or a state capitol building, it begins with victories in races for bold, justice-focused District Attorneys like Rachel Rollins. That's why we were honored to stand with Rachel in her primary and we look forward to fighting alongside her through November and beyond." -- Jim Dean, Chair, Democracy for America

VICTORY: DFA says Pressley win in MA-7 reflects Democrats’ “inclusive populist transformation”

Ayanna Pressley just won one of the most shocking Democratic primary upsets of the year, unseating Democratic Congressman Mike Capuano in Massachusetts' 7th Congressional District.

Democracy for America endorsed Pressley in her primary fight in July.

Statement from Democracy for America Chair Jim Dean on Ayanna Pressley's stunning primary win in Massachusetts' 7th:

"Ayanna Pressley's remarkable victory tonight is a testament to the strength of the grassroots movement she built, and an important reflection of the generational, multiracial inclusive populist transformation that's happening in the Democratic Party right now all across the country.

"A fearless fighter for Boston's Black, brown, and white working families, Ayanna Pressley will be a champion for progressive priorities like Medicare for All and criminal justice reform in Congress. She'll make history as the first Black woman to represent Massachusetts in House, but she'll also bring a range of life experiences -- as a sexual assault survivor and the daughter of an incarcerated parent -- that are desperately needed in our halls of power.

"With so much at stake in the era of Trump, tonight's results make clear what Ayanna Pressley knew when she boldly launched her campaign against a ten-term incumbent: Change in the country and Congress can't wait. We were honored to stand with Ayanna Pressley in her gutsy, history-making primary campaign, and we look forward to fighting alongside her as she continues working to ensure the voices of all Bay Staters are represented in Washington." -- Jim Dean, Chair, Democracy for America

DFA on Rahm’s Reelection Pass: “Good riddance to bad rubbish”

This morning, in a surprise decision, Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel announced that he would not run for a third term.

Democracy for America (DFA) strongly backed Jesus "Chuy" Garcia in his 2015 race for Mayor, which forced Emanuel into Chicago's first mayoral runoff.

DFA has more one million members nationwide, including 18,529 members in the Chicago, and works closely with a number of affiliated grassroots groups in and around the city.

Democracy for America's Chair Jim Dean on Rahm Emanuel's decision not to run for reelection:

"Good riddance to bad rubbish.

"While it's disappointing that Chicagoans won't have the chance to give Rahm Emanuel the massive defeat at the polls he deserves for his long record of sheltering injustice, perpetuating inequity, and failing to keep Chicago safe, this is a great day for the Windy City.

"It won't be easy to fix Rahm's mess, but we look forward to seeing what inclusive populist champions emerge in the coming mayoral race and supporting their commitment to fighting for a more just and equitable city." -- Jim Dean, Chair, Democracy for America

DFA: Racist robocalls only “strengthens the people-powered movement behind Andrew Gillum”

Yesterday, a neo-nazi group aligned with Florida gubernatorial candidate Ron DeSantis launched racist robocalls featuring someone claiming to be Andrew Gillum, his inclusive populist opponent, speaking in "a black minstrel-style voice as jungle noises play in the background."

News of the robocalls follows a racism-tinged interview earlier in the week where DeSantis suggested that Florida would "monkey this up" by electing Gillum and revelations that DeSantis was a member of an openly racist facebook group.

Statement from Democracy for America Executive Director Charles Chamberlain on the impact of the right's bigoted attacks on Andrew Gillum:

"Ron DeSantis is running scared. That's why he launched his general election campaign with a racism-laced interview and why his Nazi backers picked up on his bigoted messaging and pushed out their vile robocalls.

"And, they should be scared.

"Andrew Gillum has not only built a grassroots movement that will make history this November, he has a multiracial, inclusive populist vision for Florida that will finally end the fringe right's death-grip on the Sunshine State.

"Yet what DeSantis and his bigoted supporters don't seem to understand is that every thinly-veiled, hate-fueled swipe they take only grows and strengthens the people-powered movement behind Andrew Gillum.

"The Black, brown, and white working families who call Florida home are hungry for new, visionary leadership and we are more committed than ever to helping them reject bigotry, hate, and division by electing Florida's first Black governor this November." -- Charles Chamberlain, Executive Director, Democracy for America

VICTORY: DFA celebrates David Garcia’s Arizona Gubernatorial primary win

David Garcia just won the race for Arizona's Democratic gubernatorial nomination. Endorsing him in June of 2017, Democracy for America was an early backer of Garcia in Arizona's race for Governor.

Statement from Democracy for America Executive Director Charles Chamberlain on David Garcia's primary win in Arizona's race for Governor:

"David Garcia's victory in tonight's Democratic primary is a testament to his life of service and the bold, inclusive populist vision he's put forward from the very start of his campaign for governor. From his bold vision for tuition-free public college to his commitment to turning Arizona into a solar power superpower, David Garcia hasn't just said he's fighting for Arizona's working families, he's put forward an agenda that can deliver for them in Phoenix.

"Arizonans deserve a governor focused on creating a better future for all of them, not one like Doug Ducey looking to curry favor with a White House content to score political points by stoking division and hatred in their communities. David Garcia isn't afraid to challenge the racist agenda of the Trump Administration -- and, as a teacher and veteran, he's spent his life dedicated to public education and service.

"David Garcia is the kind of progressive change agent we need in leadership across the country. That's why we're honored to support him in this primary and why we can't wait to fight alongside him all the way through November." -- Charles Chamberlain, Executive Director, Democracy for America

VICTORY: DFA on Andrew Gillum’s “massive upset victory” in Florida Gubernatorial primary

Andrew Gillum just delivered a massive upset victory in the race for Governor in Florida. Democracy for America was a strong early supporter of Gillum following its endorsement in June 2017.

Statement from Democracy for America Executive Director Charles Chamberlain on Andrew Gillum's primary stunner:

"Andrew Gillum's massive upset victory tonight is an explosive development in the 2018 election that definitively proves that the New American Majority of people of color and progressive white voters are ready to deliver transformative results for candidates who share their commitment to bold, inclusive populism.

"Andrew Gillum, the only candidate who wasn't a millionaire or the scion of a powerful political family, and an army of grassroots organizers built a movement that inspired tens of thousands of new and demoralized voters and spoke directly to the challenges they face with bold solutions like robust criminal justice reform, Medicare for All, and a historic $1 billion commitment to education.

"Tonight, Floridians made it clear that the time for fundamental progressive change in the Sunshine State is here. Andrew Gillum has built an unprecedented movement for change in Florida and it's hard to imagine a candidate better equipped to defeat a Trump sycophant like Ron DeSantis this November." -- Charles Chamberlain, Executive Director, Democracy for America

Democracy for America endorses Kerri Evelyn Harris in Delaware U.S. Senate primary

Today, Democracy for America (DFA) endorsed Kerri Evelyn Harris in Delaware's Democratic primary for U.S. Senate. Harris is running in the primary against sitting U.S. Senator Tom Carper.

Democracy for America has 3,672 members in Delaware and more than one million members nationwide.

DFA Executive Director Charles Chamberlain on the grassroots progressive organization's decision to stand with Kerri Evelyn Harris in her race for U.S. Senate:

"With this fall's election less than 90 days away, it's more important than ever to seize every chance we have to push the Democratic Party to better reflect the diverse communities it serves and put forward the kind of bold, inclusive populist agenda we need to confront our challenges and inspire millions of new & infrequent voters to join our fight.

"A veteran, gay woman of color, and community organizer, Kerri Evelyn Harris has the kind of voice, life experience, and progressive vision our country desperately need in the U.S. Senate right now.

"In 2018, Democrats have an opportunity to make it clear to voters, millions of whom stay home in election after election, our commitment to confronting corporate power, standing up to the right's unrelenting hate, and fighting for bold inclusive populism -- like Medicare for All and robust criminal justice reform.

"Unbought by corporations and unbroken by a political establishment focused on doing their bidding, Kerri Evelyn Harris personally understands the struggles of Delaware's working families and, with a lifetime of experience serving her country and community, she'll be their unbridled champion in the U.S. Senate.

"Democracy for America is honored to endorse Kerri Evelyn Harris for U.S. Senate, not only because she'll be the kind of fearless progressive leader we need in Washington, but also because the visionary, inspiring, and people-centered campaign she's running is precisely the kind of grassroots effort Democrats need to win nationwide." -- Charles Chamberlain, Executive Director, Democracy for America

This organization is focused on renewing our nation's democracy to ensure that all Americans are represented and our national structure becomes inclusive and balanced. Their vision aligns with mine and I look forward to working together to build a greater America where ALL of our communities can thrive!" -- Kerri Evelyn Harris

As a part of its work in the 2018 election cycle, DFA intends to raise and spend more than $12 million in support of progressive candidates, make more than 2 million voter contacts, and support more than 250 candidates nationwide -- like Kerri Evelyn Harris -- in running inclusive populist campaigns committed to turning out the New American Majority of people of color and progressive white voters in November.

Kerri Evelyn Harris is a veteran, an LGBTQ woman of color, an advocate, and a community organizer who has dedicated her life to public service. After serving in the U.S. Air Force, Harris held multiple jobs to make ends meet before landing in her current position as Program Director for Achievement Matters, where she leads a team working with youth to close the educational achievement gap. Harris is also active in numerous Delaware-based community action groups, from the Metropolitan Wilmington Urban League and the Center for Popular Democracy to serving as the Kent County Coordinator for Network Delaware. When she's elected this November, Harris will not only be the first LGBTQ person of color in the U.S. Senate, she'll be an outspoken champion for a broad-based, inclusive populist agenda including Medicare for All, universal pre-K, a $15 minimum wage, and opposition to any efforts to expand fracking and offshore drilling.

Democracy for America is a member-driven, people-powered progressive PAC with more than one million members nationwide committed to taking on income inequality, money in politics, and structural racism. DFA endorses Underwood (IL-14), McClure (NE-01), Schiller (OH-2) for U.S. House

Today, Democracy for America (DFA) announced its endorsement of Lauren Underwood (IL-14), Jessica McClure (NE-1), and Jill Schiller (OH-2) in three races that will be critical to not only ensuring that Democrats retake the U.S. House in November, but do so with progressive leaders committed to an inclusive populist agenda.

Democracy for America is a member-driven, people-powered progressive political organization with 1 million members across the country and a total of 13,482 in the IL-14, NE-1, and OH-2 districts alone.

Chair Jim Dean on DFA's endorsement of these three critical races for U.S. House this November:

"As we move closer and closer to the general election, the question isn't whether a blue wave is possible this Fall, but how big that wave will be and if it will give us the kind of audacious, inclusive populist leaders we need to deliver on big, bold ideas like Medicare for All and robust criminal justice reform.

"We believe that Lauren Underwood, Jessica McClure, and Jill Schiller are precisely the kind of courageous leaders we need guiding the way in Washington, and that's why Democracy for America is so honored to endorse their Congressional campaigns ahead of this fall's general election.

"Lauren Underwood (IL-14) is a registered nurse who worked in the Obama administration implementing the Affordable Care Act and helping communities prepare for health disasters. When elected, she'll not only be the first Black woman to represent her district in Congress, she'll be a strong voice in efforts to take on gun violence, pass immigration reform, and push for Medicare for All.

"Jessica McClure (NE-1) is a trained chemist, lawyer, and a mother who wants to go to Washington to fight for Nebraska working families and the many environmental and health regulations that kept them safe before the Trump administration started dismantling them.

"Jill Schiller (OH-2), with years of experience helping small businesses and non-profit organizations thrive in southwest Ohio, is fighting for a seat in Congress to represent working families in her community who have been long ignored by the right-wing lobbying interests that control their current representative.

"Lauren Underwood, Jessica McClure, and Jill Schiller are each running smart, grassroots campaigns that progressives can be proud of and, when they get to Congress, will be the kind of fearless progressive champions our country desperately needs leading the battle for racial and economic justice. Democracy for America members couldn't be more excited to fight alongside them in this election and once they get to Congress." -- Jim Dean, Chair of Democracy for America

As a part of its work in the 2018 election cycle, DFA intends to raise and spend more than $12 million in support of progressive candidates, make more than 2 million voter contacts, and support more than 250 candidates nationwide -- like Underwood, McClure, and Schiller -- in running inclusive populist campaigns committed to turning out the New American Majority of people of color and progressive white voters in November.

Lauren Underwood grew up in Naperville, Illinois and has committed her life to healthcare and public policy. A registered nurse, with hands-on healthcare experience, Lauren was appointed by President Obama to serve as a Senior Advisor at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS). During her time at the HHS, Lauren helped implement the Affordable Care Act and assisted communities across the country prevent, prepare for, and respond to disasters, bioterror attacks and public health emergencies. When she's elected to Congress, Lauren will not only be the first Black woman to serve Illinois' 14th Congressional District, she'll bring her first-hand knowledge and experience as healthcare worker to the U.S. House.

A trained chemist who moved from the laboratory to the legal world to protect important regulations that keep communities safe, Jessica McClure believes that Nebraska working families need a voice in Washington. Like many others, her congress member's vote to repeal the Affordable Care Act was personal, because she saw first hand what the protections guaranteed by the legislation meant when her young daughter was diagnosed with a treatable chronic gastrointestinal condition that was difficult to diagnose and now would be considered a pre-existing condition. When Jessica goes to Congress, she'll not only be looking to protect and expand the ACA to Medicare for All, she'll be fighting to bring transformational, systemic, progressive change to government.

Jill Schiller is a mother, an attorney, a founder of a successful non-profit that focuses on children's literacy, and a former Obama administration official. She grew up in Philadelphia and earned her undergraduate degree from Ursinus College and a law degree from Temple University. She is running for Congress to make sure Ohioan voices are being heard over the big money lobbyists who control the Republican agenda in Washington. Jill believes we need leaders who know what's right and are willing to stand up for their constituency.

"In Congress, Pam Keith is committed to holding Donald Trump accountable for the hate-fueled actions his grotesquely corrupt administration has taken in office, but she's also focused on fighting for inclusive populist priorities, like Medicare for All and robust criminal justice reform, that Democrats need to pursue if we want to hold on to power beyond this one election.

Born into a U.S. Navy family, Pam Keith is a veteran who was first able to learn about the positive role the United States could play in the world while her family served the county in Morocco, Syria, and Brazil in the U.S. Foreign Service. Later, while living in Lexington, KY, Keith's first-hand experience with the discrimination she faced as one of only African-Americans in her neighborhood fueled a passion for equality and justice that pushed her to earn degrees at U.C. Davis, Boston College Law School, and eventually become a commissioned Judge Advocate in the U.S. Navy. Today, Keith is working to get to Congress to fight for big, bold inclusive populist reforms that will help black, brown, and white working families in Florida's 18th congressional district thrive.

"Like Jahana Hayes, Democracy for America members know that Congress can't work for the country until it starts to look more like the rest of the country. Congress desperately needs more teachers, more women of color, and more leaders willing to be unwavering in their fight for big, bold inclusive populist ideas like Medicare for All, comprehensive immigration reform, and robust gun violence prevention legislation.

"DFA members are honored to endorse Jahana Hayes for Congress because we know she's committed to helping, as she's done as a teacher, the next generation of Americans live up to the promise of our shared progressive values." -- Jim Dean, Chair, Democracy for America

Jahana Hayes on receiving DFA's grassroots endorsement:

"Democracy for America's work is driven by many of the same beliefs that motivated me to run for office. Our federal government needs new, progressive voices that will represent people of every background, and with DFA's support I hope to fill this role in Connecticut's 5th District." -- Jahana Hayes

As a part of its work in the 2018 election cycle, DFA intends to raise and spend more than $12 million in support of progressive candidates, make more than 2 million voter contacts, and support more than 250 candidates nationwide -- like Jahana Hayes -- in running inclusive populist campaigns committed to turning out the New American Majority of people of color and progressive white voters in November.

A 2016 recipient of the National Teacher of the Year Award and a lifelong Connecticuter, Jahana Hayes is running for Congress because she wants to bring the stories of the students, parents, teachers, and community members she's worked with every day as a Social Studies teacher and school administrator with her to Washington. Propelled by her community and a passion for education, Hayes broke the cycle of addiction and poverty that had trapped her family growing up. Now, Jahana is working to get to Congress to fight for the kind of big, bold inclusive populist reforms, like Medicare for All and robust gun violence prevention legislation, that will make it easier for others to do the same.

VICTORY: DFA hails Rashida Tlaib’s history-making congressional primary win in Michigan’s 13th

Early this morning, Rashida Tlaib (MI-13) won a hard-fought primary in a critical Democratic stronghold in Michigan previously represented by Congressman John Conyers.

Statement from Democracy for America Chair Jim Dean on Rashida Tlaib's victory in Michigan's 13th Congressional District:

"Rashida Tlaib's win today is a huge victory for Detroiters, the progressive movement, and anyone who believes we need more fearless champions for economic and social justice in Congress.

"Throughout her career, Rashida Tlaib has regularly taken on millionaires, billionaires, and corporate interests to deliver for Detroit working families and fight for racial and economic justice, and we know we'll see nothing less from her once she gets to Washington.

"With her victory, Rashida Tlaib is not only set to make history as the first Muslim woman to win a seat in Congress, she's poised to be a key organizer on Capitol Hill in the fight for critical inclusive populist reforms like Medicare for All, tuition-free college, and a $15 minimum wage. Democracy for America members were honored to fight alongside Rashida Tlaib in this race, and we look forward to continuing that work through November and beyond." -- Jim Dean, Chair, Democracy for America

VICTORY: DFA on Wesley Bell’s victory over 20+ year incumbent in St. Louis County prosecutor primary

Wesley Bell just won a major upset in his primary challenge of a 20+ year incumbent for St. Louis County (MO) prosecutor. Democracy for America endorsed Bell in the race in mid July.

Statement from Democracy for America Chair Jim Dean on Wesley Bell's transformative victory in the race for St. Louis County Prosecutor:

"We can't fundamentally reform our criminal justice system if we don't change our criminal prosecutors, and that's exactly what St. Louis County is poised to do tonight after Wesley Bell's stunning victory over a 20+ year incumbent.

"Arrest-and-incarcerate, win-at-any-cost prosecutors actively stand in the way of justice and, in the process, make entire communities less safe. Wesley Bell's victory tonight not only makes it clear that St. Louis County voters know that they can succeed when they demand more of the leaders they task with keeping their community safe, it shows progressives all across the country that change is possible in their communities too.

"Coupled with Larry Krasner's victory in Philadelphia in 2017 and Kim Foxx's win in her 2016 race for State's Attorney in Illinois, Wesley Bell's success shows us that voters are hungry for prosecutors who understand the structural racism that undergirds our criminal justice system and are committed to delivering on reforms that can fundamentally alter it, like ending cash bail and the independent review of police misconduct." -- Jim Dean, Chair, Democracy for America

VICTORY: Democracy for America celebrates James Thompson’s victory in Kansas’s 4th primary

James Thompson just won his primary in Kansas's 4th Congressional District.

DFA was a strong supporter of Thompson in his 2017 special election race and is supporting him once again in his race against his now incumbent Republican rival.

Statement from Democracy for America Chair Jim Dean on James Thompson's 2018 primary victory in Kansas's 4th Congressional District:

"James Thompson's shockingly strong showing in his 2017 special election was one of the very first signs that a progressive tsunami was possible in 2018. Thompson's big primary victory tonight makes it clear that the energy and passion that helped propel him in 2017 is only growing stronger as we get closer to November.

"Democracy for America members were honored to stand with James Thompson in 2017, we were thrilled to stand with him once again in today's primary, and we can't wait to battle alongside him for critical inclusive populist priorities like Medicare for All, a $15 minimum wage, and criminal justice reform through November and beyond." -- Jim Dean, Chair, Democracy for America

August 7 Primaries: DFA watching Gubernatorial, House, local races in MI, MO, KS

Today, during the first round of August 2018 primaries, Democracy for America (DFA) is paying particularly close attention to Abdul El-Sayed's trailblazing race for Governor of Michigan, four U.S. House races spread across three Midwest states, and a county prosecutor contest critical to the fight for criminal justice reform in St. Louis County, Missouri.

DFA-endorsed federal and local candidates running in competitive primary elections today include:

  • Abdul El-Sayed (Governor - Michigan)
  • Fayrouz Saad (U.S. House - MI 11th)
  • Rashida Tlaib (U.S. House - MI 13th)
  • Cori Bush (U.S. House - MO 1st)
  • James Thompson (U.S. House - KS 4th)
  • Wesley Bell (St. Louis County (MO) Prosecutor)

While the grassroots campaign he's built has caught much of the national media's attention after garnering the support of Sen. Bernie Sanders and fellow DFA-endorsed progressive champion Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Democracy for America has been closely involved in El-Sayed's primary following its endorsement in April 2018.

In the races for U.S. House, DFA members are excited to make history tomorrow with the primary victories for Rashida Tlaib (MI-13) in a key Democratic stronghold in Michigan and Fayrouz Saad (MI-11) in a district critical to flipping Congress in the fall. If elected, Tlaib and Saad will both be inclusive populist fighters and the first Muslim women in Congress. DFA members are also excited about Cori Bush's (MO-01) progressive challenge of a Democratic member of Congress in Missouri and ensuring that James Thompson (KS-4), who DFA supported during his race in a 2017 special election, gets a second shot against his now incumbent Republican rival.

Finally, DFA will also be paying close attention to criminal justice reform champion Wesley Bell's race for county prosecutor in St. Louis County, MO. The race allows St. Louis County voters to replace a 20+ year incumbent notorious for his role in denying justice to Michael Brown and others killed by police in St. Louis County with a leader in the fight for criminal justice reform who was elected to Ferguson, MO's city council following the uprisings that took place in the wake of Brown's murder.

As a part of its work in the 2018 election cycle, Democracy for America intends to raise and spend more than $12 million in support of progressive candidates, make more than 2 million voter contacts, and support more than 250 candidates nationwide -- like those it's backed in today's primaries -- in running inclusive populist campaigns committed to turning out the New American Majority of people of color and progressive white voters in November.

Democracy for America is a member-driven, people-powered progressive PAC with more than one million members nationwide committed to taking on income inequality, money in politics, and structural racism. Since 2004, DFA members have raised and spent more than $54 million and made more than 21.9 million volunteer calls to help successfully elect 917 progressive candidates nationwide.

Democracy for America backs Cori Bush in Missouri’s 1st Congressional District

Today, Democracy for America (DFA) endorsed Cori Bush in her primary fight for Missouri's 1st Congressional District against Democratic Congressman William Lacy Clay.

Democracy for America has more than 19,700 members in Missouri including 4,367 members in Missouri's 1st Congressional District.

DFA Chair Jim Dean on the grassroots progressive organization's decision to back Cori Bush in her race for Congress in the MO-1:

"More than ever before, the fight for racial and economic justice desperately needs leaders in Washington who intimately understand the profoundly personal struggles of Black, brown, and white working families and that's why Democracy for America members are excited to support Cori Bush in her race for Congress.

"Cori Bush's championship of Medicare for All, tuition-free college, and a $15 minimum wage isn't just an academic exercise. Cori's support for a bold progressive agenda is rooted in her own personal experience watching patients she cared for as a nurse struggle to pay for medicine they needed to survive, feeling the weight of crushing student debt, and surviving months of homelessness when times got particularly tough.

"Born and raised in St. Louis, Cori Bush is an organizer at heart who understands struggle, triumph, and the work we need to do together to fundamentally change a broken political system that empowers the wealthy and perpetuates an unjust justice system. Cori's the kind of bold, grassroots leader our country needs in Washington and we couldn't be more excited to have her back in this primary and hopefully fighting alongside her through November and beyond." -- Jim Dean, Chair, Democracy for America

Cori Bush on receiving DFA's grassroots endorsement:

"Thank you for welcoming me into the DFA family. There is nothing like having a group like DFA as our biggest supporter." -- Cori Bush

As a part of its work in the 2018 election cycle, DFA intends to raise and spend more than $12 million in support of progressive candidates, make more than 2 million voter contacts, and support more than 250 candidates nationwide -- like Bush -- in running inclusive populist campaigns committed to turning out the New American Majority of people of color and progressive white voters in November.

Born an raised in St. Louis, MO, Cori Bush is working to get to Congress to bring the thoughts, concerns, and experiences of people like her into the halls of power. Bush knows, first hand, what its likes to spend months without a home, raise children while making just a breath over minimum wage, and bear the crushing burden of student loan debt. A registered nurse, an ordained pastor, and a grassroots act, Bush is committed to being a relentless champion in Congress for the big, bold inclusive populist reforms, like Medicare for All and robust criminal justice reform, that are necessary to respond to the needs of struggling Black, brown and white progressive working families.

DFA endorses Ayanna Pressley in primary challenge in Massachusetts’ 7th Congressional District

Today, Democracy for America (DFA) endorsed Boston City Councilor Ayanna Pressley in her Massachusetts' 7th Congressional District primary challenge of Democratic Congressman Mike Capuano.

Democracy for America has 5,818 members in Massachusetts' 7th, the state's most diverse and unequal congressional district, and more than 40,000 across the Bay State.

DFA Chair Jim Dean on the grassroots progressive organization's decision to back Pressley in her race for the MA-7:

"Today, Democracy for America is endorsing Ayanna Pressley because we know she'll be a fearless leader in the fight for a bold, inclusive populist agenda in Congress, and we believe the wholly unrepresented voice she'll bring to Massachusetts' and New England's congressional delegations is essential to the political conversations on racial and economic justice our country needs to have.

"The unyielding fight that Ayanna Pressley has waged for the Boston's Black, Brown, and white working families as City Councilor speaks to the experience she'll bring to Congress and the battles for bold, inclusive populist ideas like Medicare for All and criminal justice reform she'll help lead once she gets there.

"We're also endorsing Ayanna Pressley because it's positively critical that Democrats seize every opportunity we have to elevate and empower the next generation of progressive women of color. Progressive Black women are the rock-solid base of the Democratic Party and, especially given the fights we need to wage, having their leadership in the halls of power has never been more important to our party's future.

"Congressman Mike Capuano has been a fine, progressive member of Congress, but having an experienced progressive like Ayanna Pressley on the ballot is an unmissable opportunity for Massachusetts to both ensure a leading woman of color represents its only majority-minority district and add the voice of just one person of color to New England's currently all-white congressional delegation.

"In 2018, with Donald Trump in the White House and people's lives under attack from his administration, it's crystal clear that change in Congress can't wait. Ayanna Pressley will bring precisely the kind of bold progressive change our country desperately needs to Washington, and that's why we couldn't be more excited to support her in her race for the Democratic nomination in Massachusetts' 7th Congressional District." -- Jim Dean, Chair, Democracy for America

Ayanna Pressley on receiving DFA's grassroots endorsement:

"Democracy for America is one of the leading organizations empowering people to take an active role in government, and their legacy of electing progressive candidates is unmatched.

"DFA knows that our party, our country, and the 7th District are at a crossroads, and that we need bold, activist leaders to fight for those that have been left behind by their government for too long. I am humbled to have earned the support of Democracy for America" -- Ayanna Pressley

As a part of its work in the 2018 election cycle, DFA intends to raise and spend more than $12 million in support of progressive candidates, make more than 2 million voter contacts, and support more than 250 candidates nationwide -- like Pressley -- in running inclusive populist campaigns committed to turning out the New American Majority of people of color and progressive white voters in November.

Born and raised by a single mother in Chicago, Ayanna Pressley first came to Boston to attend Boston University, before going to work for former U.S. Rep. Joseph P. Kennedy II (D, MA-8) and former U.S. Senator John Kerry. In 2009, Pressley ran for an at-large seat on Boston City Council, subsequently became the first woman of color elected to the Council in its 100-year history, and then went on to be re-elected four times. As Representative of Massachusetts' 7th District, one of the most diverse and unequal congressional districts in the state, Pressley is committed to working in Congress to deliver on an Equity Agenda that her grassroots campaign has developed with stakeholders in the community and fighting for other bold, inclusive populist reforms like Medicare for All.

DFA endorses Wesley Bell for St. Louis County Prosecutor

Today, Democracy for America (DFA) endorsed Wesley Bell for St. Louis County (MO) Prosecutor in his race to replace long-time county prosecutor Bob McCulloch, notorious for his role in denying justice to Michael Brown and others killed by police in St. Louis County and aggressive prosecuting tactics

With his endorsement, Bell is being added to DFA's national "Criminal Justice Reform Champions" slate of candidates for Sheriff, District Attorney, County Prosecutor, and Judge specifically focused on criminal justice reform.

DFA Chair Jim Dean on the grassroots progressive organization's endorsement of Wesley Bell for County Prosecutor in St. Louis County, MO:

"Democracy for America is endorsing Wesley Bell for St. Louis County Prosecutor, because he understands the systemic racism that underlies the broken justice system in St. Louis County and his work on the Ferguson City Council demonstrates that he knows how to implement the concrete reforms necessary to begin addressing it.

"The antiquated and ineffective arrest-and-incarcerate, win-at-any-costs methods of the current county prosecutor alienates the criminal justice system from the residents it serves and them them less safe. That's why Wesley Bells supports modern criminal justice reforms that are proven to combat serious crime and build trust within the communities the police and courts are sworn to protect, such as ending cash bail for non-violent offenses, replacing jail time with treatment for those struggling with drug addiction, and requiring independent review of police misconduct.

"Four days after Bob McCulloch was re-elected to his seventh term as St. Louis County Prosecutor, Ferguson and the nation was rocked by the killing of Michael Brown and the failure of the "justice" system it came to represent . By electing Wesley Bell it's next County Prosecutor, St. Louis County has the opportunity to break from its history of reflecting the injustices of our current justice system to leading the charge for the robust and visionary criminal justice reforms our country needs nationwide." -- Jim Dean, Chair, Democracy for America

DFA has 19,925 members in the state of Missouri and more than one million members nationwide.

Raised in North St. Louis County, Wesley Bell is the son of a Police Officer and a County civil servant. After earning degrees from Lindenwood University and the University of Missouri law school, Bell served his community as a Public Defender and was elected to Ferguson's city council following the uprising that came in the wake of Michael Brown's murder. As a Ferguson City Councilmember, Bell worked with Barack Obama's U.S. Department of Justice to implement the consent decree to reform the City's criminal justice system. This included more thorough training for police, the use of body cameras, a pay raise for police, reforming use-of-force policy, and overhauling the municipal court system. If elected, Bell is committed to fixing a broken and outdated County Prosecutor's office and replacing it's failed arrest-and-incarcerate, win-at-any-cost methods with a focus on strategies designed to combat serious crime and heal the relationship between the County's criminal justice system and the residents it serves.

As a part of its work in the 2018 election cycle, DFA intends to raise and spend more than $12 million in support of progressive candidates, make more than 2 million voter contacts, and support more than 250 candidates nationwide -- like Danielle, Lee, Lori, & Len -- in running inclusive populist campaigns committed to turning out the New American Majority of people of color and progressive white voters in November.

Dr. Danielle Mitchell is a practicing family physician who knows what it means to struggle and triumph in the face of adversity. In Congress, Mitchell will not only be champion for Medicare for All, she'll help lead the fight for inclusive populist progressive priorities that address racial injustice, stand up to corporate interests, and help others break the cycle of poverty.

DFA says Kavanaugh “represents a generational assault on justice, freedom, core democratic values”

Donald Trump just nominated right-wing ideologue Brett Kavanaugh to the U.S. Supreme Court.

Here's Democracy for America (DFA) Chair Jim Dean on Trump's nomination of Kavanaugh to the Court and DFA's vow to fight it:

"Donald Trump's decision to nominate a reactionary ideologue like Brett Kavanaugh and shift the balance of the U.S. Supreme Court even further right represents a generational assault on justice, freedom, and our country's core democratic values.

"If Brett Kavanaugh survives the confirmation process, he will rapidly advance a fringe right agenda on the court that will accelerate plutocratic control of our economy and politics, actively undermine the steps our country must take towards greater racial equity, and directly lead to the deaths of countless women with the dismantling of abortion rights.

"Democrats and so-called moderate Republicans in the U.S. Senate have a choice: Stand with the American people and fight for a Supreme Court that protects our Constitution's core progressive values or cave in to Donald Trump and own every single crushed dream, broken community, and lifeless body that results from the rulings issued by a Court with Kavanaugh's extreme-right vote.

"This fight won't be easy, but Democracy for America members are committed to doing anything and everything we can to make sure that Democrats and so-called moderate Republicans in the U.S. Senate make the right choice and reject Brett Kavanaugh. And, if they don't, we're committed to working even harder to hold them accountable for their complicity in enabling the nightmares to come." -- Jim Dean, Chair, Democracy for America

Starting with events taking place across the country tomorrow, Democracy for America will be working with Indivisible and dozens of other national progressive groups to make sure the voices of the hundreds of thousands who oppose Kavanaugh are heard during the coming fight over the Court.

DFA Press Release

Following Kennedy retirement, DFA pushes Senate Dems to mercilessly fight Trump’s SCOTUS nomination

This afternoon, Justice Anthony Kennedy announced his retirement from the U.S. Supreme Court, potentially handing Donald Trump another opportunity to nominate a right-wing zealot.

Democracy for America issued the following public statement to U.S. Senate Democrats following Justice Kennedy's resignation:

"At the opening of one of the most important fights for a U.S. Supreme Court seat in a generation, we want to make one thing very clear:

"Voters all across the is country expect Senate Democrats to do everything in their power to reject whatever anti-choice, pro-corporate, enabler of bigotry and hate Donald Trump and Mitch McConnell attempt to force onto the U.S. Supreme Court to replace Justice Kennedy.

"Mitch McConnell and Senate Republicans didn't spend a single moment worrying about waging an unprecedented, year-long war of all-out partisan obstruction against President Obama's nomination of a milquetoast moderate to the Court. Senate Democrats' opposition to whatever neo-fascist, right-wing ideologue the Federalist Society tells Trump to push through before the midterms deserves even less concern.

"Senate Republicans deserve precisely the same level of 'assistance' they offered President Obama and Senate Democrats after Justice Scalia's death. If Senate Democrats deliver that kind of unwavering fight, they can rest assured knowing that the voters and activists who believe in justice and freedom will have their back every step of the way." -- Jim Dean, Chair, Democracy for America

JANUS: While SCOTUS “once again reveals itself to be tool” of right, DFA finds hope in Ocasio-Cortez

Democracy for America's statement on the U.S. Supreme Court's Janus ruling and its decision to advance Republican assaults on union rights:

"Following yesterday's partisan 5-4 decisions on Trump's Muslim Ban and fake abortion clinics, the U.S. Supreme Court has once again revealed itself to be a tool of the fringe-right conservatives in Congress and the corporations, billionaires, and millionaires who control every single breath they take.

From the very start Janus was a calculated, political attack orchestrated by right-wing corporate interests to aid the destruction of unions, one of the few institutions in America working people have to take on the powerful corporations who dominate their lives. Rather than standing up for the interests of working people, in a nakedly partisan ruling determined by a U.S. Supreme Court seat stolen by Mitch McConnell and his Senate cronies, a bare conservative majority gave their wealthy and powerful patrons exactly what they wanted.

"While this loss and the assault on workers' rights it represents is real, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez's shocking victory in New York's 14th Congressional District last night should give progressives hope. While one Congressional district won't change the composition of a Supreme Court controlled by a stolen seat, Ocasio-Cortez's victory reminds us that a new generation of inclusive populist leaders is on the march. While the far-right and their corporate masters won today, a path to the real progressive change our country needs still exists through the ballot box in 2018 and beyond. It's our duty to seize it." -- Jim Dean, Chair, Democracy for America

VICTORY: Ben Jealous delivers another major progressive victory in Maryland gubernatorial primary

Ben Jealous just won the Democratic primary for Governor of Maryland.

Even before he got in the race, Democracy for America (DFA ) publicly urged Jealous to run for Governor of Maryland and began mobilizing DFA members to pledge their support for him if he jumped in -- making today's primary victory particularly sweet for DFA's over 25,000 members in Maryland and more than one million members across the country.

DFA Chair Jim Dean on Ben Jealous' victory in Maryland's Democratic gubernatorial primary:

"Ben Jealous' victory tonight is a tremendous win for the people of Maryland and progressives all across the country. Ben Jealous has spent his life fighting for racial and economic justice, and has never shied away from speaking truth to power. With Ben Jealous at the top of the ticket, Maryland Democrats have a leader who can motivate, inspire, and energize the base voters they need to win, and articulate a bold, inclusive populist vision for the state that brings the next generation of voters to the polls.

"A champion for thriving public education, Medicare for All, and robust criminal justice reform, as Governor, Ben Jealous will be a history-making, breath of fresh air in Maryland and a transformative leader on the national stage. Democracy for America members are proud to have supported Ben even before he got into this race, and we're looking forward to fighting alongside him to victory in November."  -- Jim Dean, Chair, Democracy for America

VICTORY: DFA-endorsed Dana Balter wins NY-24 primary over DC Democratic insiders

In another stunning blow to DC Democratic insiders tonight, Democracy for America (DFA)-endorsed candidate Dana Balter just won the Democratic primary in New York's 24th Congressional District overcoming tremendous outside spending from the DCCC and others with the help of local and national grassroots progressive support.

DFA Jim Dean on Dana Balter's primary win over Democratic insiders and path to victory over her GOP opponent this Fall:

"In tonight's primary, Dana Balter defeated an anti-choice opponent being propped up by out-of-touch Washington insiders looking for someone to do their bidding in Congress, and that's precisely what she's going to do again this fall against Republican John Katko.

"All across New York's 24th District and the country, grassroots Democrats united behind Dana Balter because they know that to defeat a Republican who stands with Trump 91% of the time, we need a progressive leader who is willing to fight for the bold, inclusive populist reforms working families need 100% of the time.

"Democracy for America members were thrilled to stand with Dana Balter in this primary fight, and, as excited as we are about her victory over Democratic insiders tonight, we can't wait to fight alongside her to victory over her out-of-touch, right-wing opponent this November." -- Jim Dean, Chair, Democracy for America

VICTORY: DFA on Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’ stunning primary upset victory in NY-14

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez just delivered the primary upset of the year unseating Democratic House Caucus Chairman Joe Crowley in the NY-14 Democratic Primary.

Democracy for America proudly endorsed Ocasio-Cortez last week.

Statement from Democracy for America Chair Jim Dean on Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez' primary stunner:

"Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez' stunning victory tonight is the clearest demonstration yet that when candidates welcome the New American majority of people of color and white progressive voters and run on a bold, visionary inclusive populist agenda tremendous change is possible.

"Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and the army of grassroots volunteers who delivered this jaw-dropping victory tonight didn't just win a difficult race, they won a primary campaign that most laughed at them for even waging. They earned every single vote, not by currying favors with the powerful, but by running an authentic, visionary campaign driven by bold ideas like Medicare-for-All, tuition-free college, robust criminal justice reform, and a federal jobs guarantee. They made it clear that Democrats need the courage to change.

"We couldn't be prouder to have backed Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez in this primary and we hope her victory tonight sends a clear message to a Democratic Party that still needs to hear it: When Democratic candidates run campaigns rooted in inclusive populist priorities and centering the lived experiences of the New American Majority of people of color and white progressives, progressives win." -- Jim Dean, Chair, Democracy for America

June 26 Primaries: DFA watching MD Gubernatorial, U.S. House races in CO, MD, NY

Today, during 2018's last set of June primaries, Democracy for America (DFA) is paying particularly close attention to Ben Jealous' race for Governor in Maryland and three U.S. House races in Colorado and New York (including one key for Democrats hopes of retaking the chamber).

DFA-endorsed federal and local candidates running in competitive primary elections today include:

  • Ben Jealous (Governor - Maryland)
  • Joe Neguse (U.S. House - CO 2nd)
  • Emily Sirota (CO House - District 9)
  • Donna Edwards (Prince George's County (MD) Executive)
  • Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (U.S. House - NY 14th)
  • Dana Balter (U.S. House - NY 24th)

DFA began supporting Ben Jealous' campaign for Governor of Maryland even before the former NAACP President joined the race. In early May 2017, the grassroots progressive organization publicly urged Jealous to run for Governor and began mobilizing DFA members to pledge their support for him if he jumped in -- making today's primary, more than a year later, particularly exciting for DFA's over 25,000 members in Maryland and more than one million members across the country.

In the races for U.S. House, DFA members are fired up for Dana Balter (NY-24) who, with the help of local grassroots Democratic group, is taking on a DCCC-backed opponent who previously publicly opposed abortion rights. Late last week, DFA backed Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (NY-14) who has waged a strong challenge against an incumbent Democratic insider thanks to the support of grassroots progressives in her Queens and Bronx-based district and across the country. DFA members are also looking forward to seeing Joe Neguse (CO-2), who the organization endorsed last September, win his primary in and around the critical progressive stronghold of Boulder, CO.

Finally, DFA can't wait to see Donna Edwards' succeed in her primary for Prince George's County Executive and Emily Sirota's race for State House in Colorado. DFA has a long history as a fierce ally of Edwards throughout her time in Congress and her 2016 campaign for U.S. Senate in Maryland. Meanwhile, Sirota's race in CO will hopefully result in a victory for a local champion of inclusive populism.

MUSLIM BAN: DFA says “sky-high” 2018 stakes “even higher” after SCOTUS ruling

Democracy for America's statement on the U.S. Supreme Court's incredibly disappointing ruling on the Trump Muslim Ban:

"The 5-4 passage of Donald Trump's Muslim Ban via a Supreme Court seat stolen by Mitch McConnell and his Senate cronies is an important reminder of the complicity of every single Republican member of Congress in the execution of Donald Trump's anti-American, hate-fueled agenda.

"After watching Donald Trump call white supremacists 'very fine people' and advance a policy directing the government to steal infants from the arms of refugee parents, the stakes of the 2018 election were already sky-high and, after today's ruling, got even higher. Donald Trump is succeeding in rotting core institutions of American government from the inside out. This fall's election may be one of our last chances to start the process of saving them." -- Neil Sroka, Communications Director, Democracy for America

Democracy for America endorses Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez for Congress in NY-14

Democracy for America (DFA) today endorsed Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez in her Democratic primary challenge of U.S. Representative Joe Crowley in New York's 14th Congressional District.

DFA has 119,998 members in the state of New York -- including more than 18,000 in and around New York's 14th district -- and more than one million members nationwide.

DFA Chair Jim Dean on why the grassroots progressive organization's decision to back Ocasio-Cortez in her NY-14 race:

"Leadership in Washington shouldn't be determined by the number of corporate lobbyists you have on speed dial or the backroom deals you're willing to cut to get there, but by the boldness of your vision, the people you're committed to fight for, and the movements for change you're looking to help build.

"We're thrilled to endorse Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez because of the people-powered, grassroots campaign she's building to challenge the entrenched interests in Washington and the bold, next generation of political leadership we believe she represents.

"Democracy for America members are fired up about the visionary movement Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is building in the Bronx and Queens, and we're excited to help them do everything they can to take it to Washington in the closing days of this primary." -- Jim Dean, Chair, Democracy for America

As a part of its work in the 2018 election cycle, DFA intends to raise and spend more than $12 million in support of progressive candidates, make more than 2 million voter contacts, and support more than 250 candidates nationwide -- like Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez -- in running inclusive populist campaigns committed to turning out the New American Majority of people of color and progressive white voters in November.

An educator, organizer, and third-generation Bronxite, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez personally understands the struggle of families in New York's 14th District and the inclusive populist solutions they need their member of Congress to fight for in Washington. In 2008, Ocasio-Cortez's father passed away in the midst of the emerging Great Recession forcing her to take on 18-hour days waiting tables and working multiple jobs to make sure her family could stay in their home. Those lived experiences have given Ocasio-Cortez a much deeper understanding of how policies impact our most vulnerable communities in ways that go beyond what most politicians see in the white papers that reach their desk. And, ultimately, its why she's running on a bold, inclusive populist agenda that includes Medicare for All, a Federal Jobs Guarantee, tuition-free college, and criminal justice reform that's inspiring the progressive grassroots in her district and across the country.

DFA: No order Trump signs “erase[s] the psychological torment… moral shame” of family separation

Six weeks after it started taking children from their parents at the border, the Trump administration, in a sharp reversal of previous statements, has decided that it will sign an executive order to potentially indefinitely detain families in detention centers together.

DFA's chair Jim Dean replied to this response from the Trump administration with the following:

"Donald Trump's disgusting attempt to appear heroic by signing an executive order to temporarily end a policy of systematic child abuse that he pushed for, enabled, and excused is one of the vilest, politically-craven moves we've seen in the history of American politics.

"Let's be clear: Donald Trump and the administration he runs have spent nearly six weeks systematically ripping infants, toddlers, and children from the arms of asylum-seeking mothers and fathers fleeing violence and placing them in concentration camps and foster homes.

"No executive order Donald Trump signs can even begin to erase the psychological torment he's subjected these children and families to or the profound moral shame the actions of the Trump administration have brought to the country.

"Along with millions of Americans across the country, we refuse to be silent until every single infant, toddler, and child that Donald Trump's administration has ripped from their parents' arms is returned to them; all immigrants and families who are being needlessly and possibly illegally detained are freed; and the people who organized, perpetrated, and cheered on this immoral assault on human decency are brought to justice in the courts and at the ballot box." -- Jim Dean, Chair, Democracy for America

June 19 Primaries: DFA closely watching DC Council races

While celebrating Juneteenth with millions across the country today, Democracy for America (DFA) will also be closely watching the returns this evening in a number of key Democratic primaries taking place for the DC Council in Washington, D.C.

DFA-endorsed candidates running in Tuesday's Democratic primary in Washington, D.C. include:

  • Ed Lazere (DC Council Chair)
  • Jeremiah Lowery (DC Council, At-Large)
  • Elissa Silverman (DC Council, At-Large)
  • Brianne Nadeau (DC Council, Ward 1)
  • Charles Allen (DC Council, Ward 6)

A long-time supporter of DC Statehood, DFA was particularly excited to work this year alongside its DC-based affiliated group, DC for Democracy, in support of Ed Lazere and Jeremiah Lowery's bold progressive challenges of sitting incumbents for Council Chair and one of the At-Large seats, respectively.

DFA also proudly supported three Council incumbents -- Brianne Nadeau, Charles Allen, and Elissa Silverman -- who have proven themselves to be real leaders in the fight for inclusive populist policies that have helped build on DC's history of progressive leadership. In 2014, DFA proudly supported Nadeau and Allen in their successful fights to join the Council.

As a part of its work in the 2018 election cycle, Democracy for America intends to raise and spend more than $12 million in support of progressive candidates, make more than 2 million voter contacts, and support more than 250 candidates nationwide -- like those we're following in today's primary elections -- in running inclusive populist campaigns committed to turning out the New American Majority of people of color and progressive white voters in November.
