DFA responds to the DCCC’s base-depressing attacks on Democrat Laura Moser’s TX-7 race

Earlier this afternoon, the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC) launched an attack on Democrat Laura Moser's in the race for Texas' 7th Congressional District.

Democracy for America (DFA) has been a strong supporter of Moser's campaign since mid-2017 -- in fact, on Tuesday, DFA's Chair Jim Dean rallied with the Moser campaign's grassroots volunteers in Houston to help launch their early vote GOTV efforts.

Here's a statement from DFA's Electoral Director, Annie Weinberg, on the DCCC's absurd, base-depressing attacks on Democrat Laura Moser candidate for TX-7:

“The idea that some faceless hacks are calling themselves Democrats while sitting in a DC office throwing bombs at a pro-choice Democratic woman in support of a lawyer who built her career at a law firm for union-busters is precisely why Democrats lost over 1,000 elected offices over the last decade.

“Laura Moser is a fifth-generation Houstonian building a genuine grassroots campaign in her home community and, while that might not get the Republican-lite cheerleaders at the DCCC their sweet consulting gigs after this cycle, it’s exactly the kind of campaign we need to win this critical race and retake the House in November.” -- Annie Weinberg, Electoral Director, Democracy for America

DFA says Senate “train-wreck” proves Trump’s “bigotry-laced immigration policy is an epic failure”

Democracy for America’s response to this afternoon’s multi-vote failure to pass legislation protecting DREAMers from Trump-ordered deportation in the U.S. Senate:

“The one lesson from the today’s Senate train-wreck is that Donald Trump’s bigotry-laced immigration policy is an epic failure that does not and should not ever have the votes to become law. We continue to urge Democrats to stand strong in the fight for a clean DREAM Act, the only adequate legislative fix to the DACA disaster that the Trump White House has created.” — Karli Wallace Thompson, Campaign Manager, Democracy for America

Defeat the NRA: Sign our pledge now

Democracy for America has a long history of taking on the NRA. In 2017, we endorsed a full slate of progressive candidates running for seats in the Virginia House of Delegates who vowed to fight back against the NRA's grip on their state politics.

On election night, 14 out of 16 DFA-endorsed candidates -- including progressive fighters like Jennifer Carroll Foy, Donte Tanner, Chris Hurst, Jennifer Boysko, and Hala Ayala -- defeated NRA-backed candidates, giving Democrats more power than they've had in the chamber in years.

Now, DFA members are working to unseat the gun lobby's biggest allies in Congress in 2018, and we need your help. Progressive champions like Randy Bryce are doing everything they can to defeat Paul Ryan and other Republicans who side with the NRA. But it is going to take some serious grassroots momentum to overcome all of the corporate and gun lobby money that is pouring in for the GOP.

We can't sit back and accept what happened yesterday as the new normal. We need to stand up to the NRA right now. Can you commit to volunteer to help DFA-backed progressive candidates take down NRA-backed Republicans this November?

Tell Democrats: No more funding legislation until a clean DREAM Act becomes law!

Photo: Pax Ahimsa Gethen

Photo: Pax Ahimsa Gethen

In a stunning display of moral and political cowardice, Senate Democrats sold out more than 700,000 Dreamers by handing Donald Trump and the GOP the funding they asked for, despite their refusal to pass a clean DREAM Act.

Sign our petition and tell Democrats to stop playing games with people's lives: No more votes on Republican funding legislation until they pass a clean DREAM Act.

"We were not born in this country, but we grew up here and we’re fighting to earn our place. Please give us our chance to serve the only country we consider home. Please find a way to allow us to work and stay right here where we belong."

Those are the words of Zion Dirgantara, a soldier in the U.S. Army who was brought to this country by his mother when he was only 12 years old. He has served this country faithfully -- but because Donald Trump cancelled DACA, he now lives in fear of deportation.

If Democrats will not stand up for someone like Zion -- or for overwhelmingly popular legislation like the DREAM Act -- why should we trust them to stand up for any of us?

This isn't just a matter of work permits or bureaucracy. Peoples' actual lives are on the line. It is morally reprehensible that Democrats think it is more important to appease the Freedom Caucus and mythical centrist voters than to protect our families, friends and neighbors.

Sign our petition and tell Democrats to give Dreamers the security they deserve by demanding a clean Dream Act before any passing additional GOP funding bills.

When Donald Trump and Republicans rejected any possible solution for Dreamers and set up the government shutdown late last week, it looked like Democrats had finally decided to stand up for what is right.

But in less than 72 hours, they caved, all because chronic liar Mitch McConnell "promised" to allow debate on immigration legislation at some point -- a promise that doesn't guarantee any sort of protection for Dreamers.

Luis V. Gutiérrez, Chair of the Immigration Task Force of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus, was livid about the Democrats’ spectacular failure to stand up for immigrants:

"If the Republicans said we are ending same-sex marriage, but we promise Democrats a vote later; or we approve of oil drilling in every national park, but you’ll have a vote later – do you think the Democrats would say yes? This shows me that when it comes to immigrants, Latinos and their families, Democrats are still not willing to go to the mat to allow people in my community to live in our country legally."

Democrats have gotten away with breaking their promises to Dreamers for way too long. The continuing resolution passed this week sets up a budget deadline on February 8th. Democrats must use the leverage they have to push Congress to finally fulfill its commitment to protect these young Americans.

No more games. No more deals. Sign our petition and tell Democrats no more passing GOP funding legislation until a clean DREAM Act becomes law.

Thanks for helping us hold Democrats accountable for this terrible decision.

DFA backs four progressive women in primaries key to Democrats retaking U.S. House

National group says Porter (CA-45), Saad (MI-11), King (PA-16), Ortiz-Jones (TX-23) are “uniquely equipped to fire up the grassroots & replace Trump cheerleaders”

Today, Democracy for America (DFA) announced its endorsement of Katie Porter (CA-45), Fayrouz Saad (MI-11), Jess King (PA-16), and Gina Ortiz Jones (TX-23) in four key Democratic primaries whose winners will be critical to Democrats’ chances of retaking the U.S. House in November.

Democracy for America is a member-driven, people-powered progressive PAC with 1 million members across the country and a total of 13,482 in the CA-45, MI-11, PA-16, and TX-23 districts alone. The four progressive women endorsed today join 14 other non-incumbent U.S. House candidates that DFA has already endorsed in the 2018 cycle.

Chair Jim Dean on DFA’s endorsement of these four key U.S. House races:

“From the sad conclusion of the 2016 election to the soaring heights of this last weekend’s Women’s March, progressive women have been leading the resistance to Donald Trump’s hate machine and articulating the inclusive, populist vision for our country’s future that Democrats so desperately need.

“On the streets and in meeting rooms, progressive women are showing Democrats how to fight, and that’s why need leaders like Katie Porter, Fayrouz Saad, Jess King, and Gina Ortiz Jones on the floor of  U.S. House demanding accountability and fighting for racial and economic justice for all Americans.

“Each of these women would not only bring progressive values and a range of experience to the halls of Congress, they’re uniquely equipped and building the strategically smart campaigns necessary to fire up the grassroots base Democrats need to replace Donald Trump’s right-wing cheerleaders in the House.

Katie Porter (CA-45) is a lifelong consumer advocate, taught by Elizabeth Warren, who has already taken on big Wall Street banks on behalf of Californians.

Fayrouz Saad (MI-11), who built a career fighting for working Michiganders at nearly every level of government, would smash an often ignored glass ceiling when she becomes the first Muslim woman to serve in Congress.

Jess King (PA-16), with her extensive experience in economic development in both Pittsburgh and Lancaster, PA, will be the kind of tested champion our country needs for Medicare for All, debt-free college, and criminal justice reform.

“And, Gina Ortiz Jones (TX-23) will not only blaze a new trail as the House’s first Filipina, she’ll help the body understand, from first-hand experience, the injustice of serving her country under “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell.”

“Winning in 2018, especially in districts like these currently represented by Republicans, will take visionary fighters committed to delivering on big, bold inclusive populist priorities like Medicare for All, free college, and comprehensive immigration reform.  Katie Porter, Fayrouz Saad, Jess King, and Gina Ortiz Jones are precisely the kind of bold champions for progressive values our country needs in Washington and our party needs leading its’ tickets across the country.  Democracy for America members couldn’t be more excited to fight alongside them.” -- Jim Dean, Chair of Democracy for America

Katie Porter (CA-45) has built a career fighting Wall Street banks as a consumer advocate, often working alongside her former law school professor, Sen. Elizabeth Warren.  In 2012, Porter was appointed by California Attorney General (now U.S. Senator) Kamala Harris to be the state’s bank watchdog where she helped ensure Californians got the billions they were owed following the 2008 financial meltdown.  As a candidate for Congress in California’s 45th Congressional District, Porter is committed to fighting for campaign finance reforms that check the power of special interests and for a fair economy for all Americans.

Fayrouz Saad (MI-11) is a born-and-raised Michigander who has worked at the national, state, and city levels to help keep our communities safe and expand opportunities for families who call the Great Lakes State home. In 2015, after serving as a Department of Homeland Security official in the Obama administration, Fayrouz went back home to become the first Director of Detroit's Office of Immigrant Affairs under Mayor Mike Duggan - where she helped immigrants integrate into the city, find jobs and start businesses.   When elected Saad will not only be the country’s first Muslim woman in the U.S. House, she’ll be a fierce advocate for Medicare for All, a $15-an-hour federal living wage, and comprehensive immigration reform with long-term protection for DREAMers.

Jess King (PA-16) a working mom, small-business champion, and a local economic development leader who grew up in Leola, PA and never planned on running for office. However, after a career fighting for working families in Pennsylvania as an Executive Director of the Union Project in Pittsburgh and ASSETS in Lancaster, King launched her race for Congress because she knew her community needed a fighter rather than someone working with powerful interests to rig the game in Washington.  Jess is a staunch supporter of Medicare for All, as well as comprehensive immigration and criminal justice reform. In Congress, she’ll work to deliver for the common good of all Pennsylvanians.

Gina Ortiz Jones (TX-23) is an Air Force veteran, a member of the LGBT community, and a first-generation American who has served her country in Iraq and, as a civil servant, on issues surrounding economic and national security around the world.  She has seen firsthand the dangers that arise when elected officials hollow out governmental institutions, attack the free press, put personal profit above people, and deliberately weaken or undermine the voices of women and marginalized communities. As the current administration creates the same threats here at home, she once again feels called to serve her community and country.  When elected, Ortiz Jones will be the country’s first Filipina to hold a seat in the U.S. House.

Since its 2004 founding, DFA members have raised and contributed more than $40 million and made more than 11.1 million volunteer calls to help successfully elect 919 progressive candidates nationwide.

Democrats must boycott Trump’s State of the Union address

On Tuesday, January 30, Donald Trump will deliver his first State of the Union address.

Trump has repeatedly made it clear that white supremacy and vicious racism are at the heart of his administration. He is planning to shut down the government rather than pass a clean DREAM Act or fund children's health care. How can any Democrat sit there and listen politely to this greedy bigot and normalize his presidency?

Six Democratic members of Congress -- Earl Blumenauer, Pramila Jayapal, Barbara Lee, John Lewis, Maxine Waters, and Frederica Wilson -- have announced they will boycott Trump's State of the Union address.

Democracy for America and our friends at CREDO Action believe every other Democrat in the U.S. House and the U.S. Senate should join the boycott. Will you stand with us?

DFA backs Marcus Ferrell for Arizona State House

Today, Democracy for America (DFA) announced its endorsement of Marcus Ferrell in his competitive primary for Arizona Legislative District 24.

DFA is a member-driven, people-powered progressive PAC with 38,965 members in Arizona and more than one million members nationwide. The grassroots progressive organization’s endorsement of Ferrell is a continuation of its commitment to delivering inclusive populist change to Arizona in 2018.  So far this election cycle, DFA had already endorsed David Garcia for Governor, January Contreras for Attorney General, Mary Matiella for U.S. House District 2, and Ruben Gallego for reelection in U.S. House District 7.

DFA’s Electoral Campaign Manager Mondale Robinson on DFA’s decision to back Ferrell for the Arizona House:

“Marcus Ferrell will not only be an exceptional representative for the people of Arizona’s 24th Legislative District, he’ll be a forceful champion in the State House for inclusive populist priorities for all Arizonans. Marcus knows how to both fight for what he believes in and bring together powerful coalitions of surprising allies to deliver for working families.  DFA members in Arizona and across the country are incredibly excited to stand with Marcus in his race for State House, and we can’t wait to see the work we can do together for Arizona families when he gets there." -- Mondale Robinson, Electoral Campaign Manager, Democracy for America

Marcus Ferrell on receiving DFA’s support in his race to represent Arizona Legislative District 24:

“Having the endorsement of Democracy for America is an honor and privilege for our campaign because of its historic presence in the progressive movement.  As African-American Outreach Director for Bernie Sanders, when DFA endorsed our campaign it provided a major boost to his efforts, and I believe it will do the same for ours. Time and again, DFA has ended up on the right side of history by demonstrating a nuanced understanding of the role race and class plays in the issues and candidates they support.  I will do the work for people of my district and live up to the progressive values DFA represents in the State House."  -- Marcus Ferrell, candidate for AZ Legislative District 24

Marcus Ferrell is a Navy veteran, community organizer, and long-time champion of inclusive populist candidates for office up-and-down the ballot.  Recently, Ferrell served as the National African-American Outreach Director for Bernie Sanders’ 2016 presidential campaign and Deputy Campaign Manager for Stacey Abrams’ gubernatorial campaign before deciding to run for state representative.  As Arizona Legislative District 24’s next state representative, Ferrell is committed to fighting to secure statewide universal healthcare, free public college and trade school education for high school graduates, and a livable wage for all Arizonan workers.

Since its 2004 founding, DFA members have raised and contributed more than $40 million and made more than 11.1 million volunteer calls to help successfully elect 919 progressive candidates nationwide.

DFA says Dems #TrumpShutdown cave is “why we lost in 2016 & why a 2018 wave is far from guaranteed”

Democracy for America response to Senate Democrats' cave on the #TrumpShutdown:

“Today’s cave by most Senate Democrats was not only a stunning display of moral and political cowardice, it was a strategically incoherent move that demonstrates precisely why so many believe the Democratic Party doesn’t stand for anything.

“A promise from known liars Mitch McConnell, Paul Ryan, or Donald Trump isn’t worth the paper it’s printed on, yet despite that fact, most Senate Democrats, including Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer, voted to allow Donald Trump to continue to subject an ever-growing number of Dreamers to lives threatened by deportation from the only home they’ve ever known.  That’s not what moral courage or leadership in the face of Trump’s hate looks like, and it sure as hell isn’t a display of competent negotiating skills.

"If you want to know why we lost in 2016 and why a Democratic wave in 2018 is far from guaranteed, despite the deep level of disgust for Donald Trump, look no further than this weak and profoundly disappointing cave from Senate Democrats.” -- Charles Chamberlain, Executive Director, Democracy for America

Require Congressional authorization before a nuclear first strike

Rep. Ted Lieu and Sen. Ed Markey have a plan to stop that. They have proposed a bill that would require Congress to authorize a nuclear first strike. Their bill would stop Trump and protect all of us from nuclear destruction.

Sign the petition and tell Congress: Stop Donald Trump's nuclear threats. Pass the bill requiring Congressional authorization before any nuclear first strike.

DFA says #TrumpShutdown is a “fitting end to Trump’s utterly incompetent 1st year”

Spurred on by an immigration crisis created by Donald Trump and tonight's failed Senate vote,  Republicans forced the shutdown of the U.S. government despite having unified control of the U.S. House, Senate, and the White House.

Statement about tonight’s launch of the #TrumpShutdown from Democracy for America Executive Director Charles Chamberlain:

“It’s hard to imagine a more fitting end to Donald Trump’s utterly incompetent first year in office than a government shutdown brought on by his attempt to take Dreamers hostage in his effort to destroy immigrant families and build an $18 billion monument to racism on our southern border.

“Republicans control both houses of Congress and the White House and the fact that they can’t get a budget passed means they own every single second of this government shutdown.  If Republicans need Democratic votes to pass their budget, they need to craft one that reflects Democratic priorities including a clean DREAM Act.

“It’s time for the President and Congressional Republicans to fix the crisis they created and stop playing games with the government simply because Democrats refuse to cave to their racist demands.” -- Charles Chamberlain, Executive Director, Democracy for America

In the days ahead, Democracy for America members will be working to hold Republican congressional leaders accountable for their role in the #TrumpShutdown and thanking congressional Democrats for fighting to protect Dreamers with protest and rally actions at home and in Washington.

And, regardless of when the #TrumpShutdown ends, to help deliver a #BlueWave of inclusive populist victories in November, DFA members will be committing to pledge an hour of volunteer time for each day the #TrumpShutdown continues.

In 2013, a similar effort during another Republican government shutdown, yielded more than 174,800 volunteer hours pledged (representing nearly 5.25 volunteer million calls) from DFA members ahead of the 2014 midterms.

Democracy for America endorses Chuy Garcia in Illinois race for U.S. Congress

Today, Democracy for America (DFA) announced its endorsement of Jesus “Chuy” Garcia in his race for U.S. Congress in Illinois’ 4th congressional district.

DFA was a proud supporter of Garcia in his race to become Chicago’s Mayor in 2015 and worked alongside him in support of Bernie Sanders’ campaign for President in 2016.  The member-driven, people-powered progressive PAC has 18,411 members in the City of Chicago (and more than one million members nationwide) and works closely with four affiliated grassroots groups in and around the city.

Chair Jim Dean on DFA’s decision to back Garcia in the IL-4 Race:

“Throughout his life, Chuy Garcia has fearlessly taken on Chicago’s bullies and bosses and fought for working families -- and that’s precisely why Democracy for America is so excited to support him in his race for Congress.

“In the era of Trump, it’s not enough to have progressive leaders in Congress who know how to vote the right way; we need leaders, like Chuy Garcia, who know how to take on powerful interests and build the people-powered, grassroots movements needed to deliver change.

“In Congress, Chuy will be a critical asset in the fight for an inclusive populism that creates jobs and raises wages, works to deliver healthcare to all, and seeks to end voter suppression.  We simply can’t wait to help get him there." -- Jim Dean, Chair of Democracy for America

Jesus “Chuy” Garcia on receiving the support of DFA’s one million members nationwide:

“I’m honored to receive this endorsement from Democracy for America.  DFA has been leading the fight to build a progressive movement and I will do everything I can to make our government work for the people instead of wealthy special interests.” -- Jesus “Chuy” Garcia, Cook County Commissioner & candidate for Congress (IL-04)

Jesus “Chuy” Garcia is an immigrant and a community organizer who currently serves as Commissioner for the 7th District on the Cook County Board.  While Garcia had previously served his community in Chicago as a Committeeman, Alderman, and State Senator, his 2015 campaign to become Chicago’s Mayor against Rahm Emanuel inspired progressives across the country by forcing the first ever run-off election in the city’s history.  In Congress, Garcia is committed to being a crystal clear voice for immigrants and a champion for inclusive populist priorities like Medicare for All and a $15 minimum wage.

DFA: “It’s beyond pathetic” that Dems “choked” in fight for DREAM act in must-pass budget bill

Democracy for America’s Charles Chamberlain on Congressional Democrats failure to deliver on their promise to pass protections for Dreamers before the end of 2017:

"It's beyond pathetic that, at the moment when they had maximum political leverage on must-pass year-end budget legislation, Democratic congressional leaders choked and refused to fight for a clean DREAM Act.

"Each day 122 Dreamers lose their protected immigration status and get one step closer to deportation.  They don't have the luxury of waiting to fight for the lives they've built in the United States until the political sailing gets a little easier or Congressional Republicans get around to pretending like they care about their plight.

"In the year ahead, Democrats need to win back control of Congress with leaders who not only understand the stakes in the battle against Trump, but have the guts to use political leverage when they have it to deliver crushing blows to his hate-fueled agenda.  Democracy for America is committed to finding and electing those kinds of fearless leaders in 2018, and we've got no problem working to replace those already in Congress who fail to meet that standard." -- Charles Chamberlain, Executive Director, Democracy for America

DFA pledges to make #TrumpTaxScam “the epitaph carved into the headstones” of GOP’s majorities

Moments ago, after a second vote in the U.S. House, Republicans successfully jammed a major tax giveaway to millionaires, billionaires, and big business through both houses of Congress.

Democracy for America Chair Jim Dean responded to the passage of the Trump Tax Scam legislation with the following statement:

"While it's true that they're giving millionaires, billionaires, and big business a Christmas gift as they ram the Trump Tax Scam through Congress today, Donald Trump and Congressional Republicans are also handing Democrats the perfect weapon for dismembering the GOP's House and Senate majorities in 2018.

"It's hard to imagine how Donald Trump and Congressional Republicans could have crafted a piece of legislation more perfectly suited for illustrating their dedication to serving their superrich paymasters at the expense of everyone else.  No wonder the Trump Tax Scam is less popular with the American people than previous tax increases -- and that's before they try to use the holes it blows in the deficit to institute massive cuts to earned benefits like Medicare, Medicaid, and Social Security.

“In particular, the last minute additions to this tax scam that personally enrich many Republican Senators definitively proves that the Republican Party is nothing but a nest of giant ticks looking to personally suck every last drop of blood out of our country.

"Desperate to pass something after a year of failure, Donald Trump and congressional Republicans have finally given the American people something they will be remembered for with the passage of this healthcare-destroying give-away to the richest of the rich.

"In the year ahead, we're not only going to make certain Americans remember exactly what Republicans did when they passed this tax scam, we're also going to make it the epitaph carved into the headstones of their House and Senate majorities." -- Jim Dean, Chair, Democracy for America

DFA says FCC vote ending net neutrality “is a dark day for the country & the future of the internet”

Moments ago, the Federal Communications Commission voted in a 3-to-2 party-line ruling to end Internet net neutrality rules.  Democracy for America (DFA) has worked on the fight for net neutrality alongside its progressives allies for the better part of a decade.

Statement from DFA Communications Director Neil Sroka on today's repeal of net neutrality rules:

"Today's FCC vote ending net neutrality is a dark day for the country and the future of the internet.

"At a time when our country should be talking about expanding internet access and making sure that technological tools help level an increasingly uneven economic playing field, a Trump-appointed former Verizon lawyer has enabled wealthy and powerful corporate interests to strangle the innovation and democratization of power that has defined the Internet until now.

"The FCC chair's greed-driven attack on internet freedom will not be forgotten.  Corporate interests and their FCC lackeys may have won today, but they also welcomed in a new generation of activists who will work towards their defeat in the months and years ahead." -- Neil Sroka, Communications Director, Democracy for America

Doug Jones win in Alabama “exposed a gaping wound” in GOP, shows Dems “a path out of the darkness”

Tonight, Doug Jones won the special election for U.S. Senate in the deep-red state of Alabama.

Democracy for America members backed Jones on September 29th and have been enthusiastic backers in the race.

Statement from Charles Chamberlain, Executive Director of Democracy for America, on Jones' big surprise victory:

“Doug Jones’ victory tonight in deep-red Alabama isn’t just a crushing blow to Donald Trump’s agenda of bigotry, hate, and division, it’s a powerful reminder that progressives can win everywhere if we stand up for an inclusive populist political agenda and build campaigns that prioritize, energize, and mobilize the new American majority of Black, brown, and progressive white voters.

“Any Republican who thinks they dodged a bullet by having the sexist, racist, and homophobic child predator their party nominated lose in the general election needs to have their head examined. Roy Moore’s candidacy and the Republican Party’s willingness to aid it has exposed a gaping wound of depraved moral indifference and political hypocrisy within the GOP that no single loss can cauterize.

“While they may pretend otherwise after this humiliatingly historic loss, Roy Moore exemplifies a present-day Republican Party dominated white supremacist theocrats and led by a President accused of sexual misconduct by thirteen women who spent the last week cheering on a child molester's run for the U.S. Senate.

“By building a campaign that delivered unprecedented turnout from the new American majority and especially among Black women, Doug Jones and the grassroots who powered him to victory showed us a path out of the darkness of 2016 and gave us an ideal boost of momentum as we work to take back Congress in 2018.”  -- Charles Chamberlain, Executive Director, Democracy for America

Additional details about DFA’s support for Jones:

  • DFA was one of the earliest national progressive organizations to endorse Jones shortly after the primary on September 29, 2017
  • Raised and contributed over $71,742.98 from more than 6466 individual contributions (avg. $11.10) to elect Doug Jones to the U.S. Senate
  • Created and ran digital ads in support of Jones in partnership with Solidarity Strategies aimed at mobilizing sporadic Democratic voters to the polls
  • Recruited our 11,774 DFA members in Alabama to support Doug Jones’ campaign with contributions, door-knocking, phone-banking, and texting get-out-the-vote operations.

Democracy for America backs four U.S. House challengers in critical California races

National group says victories of Caforio (CA-25), Oatman (CA-48), Jammal (CA-39), Levin (CA-49) are critical to confronting Trump’s “bigoted & oligarchic agenda”

Today, Democracy for America (DFA) announced its endorsement of Bryan Caforio (CA-25),  Laura Oatman (CA-48), Sam Jammal (CA-39), and Mike Levin (CA-49) in four U.S. House races in California that will be critical to helping Democrats win back the House of Representatives in 2018.

Democracy for America is a member-driven, people-powered progressive PAC with 305,710 members in California.  In October, the national progressive group endorsed Kevin De Leon in his battle for the U.S. Senate against California’s four-term Senator, Dianne Feinstein.

Chair Jim Dean on DFA’s endorsement of these four U.S. House Challengers in California:

“Victories across California in 2018 are going to be absolutely critical to Democrats’ chances of taking back the House and gaining the political power necessary to confront and defeat Donald Trump’s bigoted and oligarchic agenda.

“Bryan Caforio, Laura Oatman, Sam Jammal, and Mike Levin, and are all running the smart, inclusive populist campaigns necessary not only to defeat the right-wing, California Republicans who have been enabling Trump’s agenda, but also inspire in the tens of thousands of new voters who want to join us in fighting back.  California has long been a progressive beacon for the country and with these new leaders fighting for it in Washington it will continue to lead the battle for big, bold ideas like Medicare For All, comprehensive immigration reform, and a robust response to climate change.

From his attacks on Dreamers and immigrants to his plan to massively increase working families’ taxes to line the pockets of his red-state billionaire pals, Donald Trump has spent his first year in office launching a repeated, no-holds-barred assault on the people of California.  By sending Bryan Caforio, Laura Oatman, Sam Jammal, and Mike Levin to Congress, Californians will have the new warriors they need to fight back and Democracy for America members couldn’t be more excited to stand with them every step of the way.” -- Jim Dean, Chair of Democracy for America

Bryan Caforio (CA-25) is a native of Southern California raised by two public school teachers who has made a career as an attorney confronting corporate wrongdoers and standing up for whistleblowers.  As a candidate for Congress in California’s 25th Congressional District, Cafario has committed to working to pass Medicare for All, expand Medicare and Social Security benefits, and build an economy that works for everyone.

Laura Oatman (CA-48) decided to run for Congress in California’s 48th Congressional District, following a crushing 2016 election after regaining hope at her local Women’s March.  A licensed architect and small business owner, Oatman wants to retire Dana Rohrabacher and ensure Orange County plays a leading role in the battle for a cleaner environment, equality for women, and good paying jobs that don’t come at the expense of people or the planet.

Sam Jammal (CA-39) grew up in the communities of California’s 39th Congressional District as the son of immigrants from South America and the Middle East.  A veteran of the Obama administration, the Mexican American Legal Defense and Education Fund (MALDEF),  and, more recently Solar City and Tesla, Jammal believes that his 2018 election isn’t just about stopping Donald Trump.  Jamal believes flipping the 39th means building a progressive future by fighting to make sure workers get a raise and families can still afford the basics, like health care, housing and a secure retirement.

As someone who has built a career fighting for sustainable energy and environmental protection, it’s no surprise that Mike Levin (CA-49) has put the battle against climate change front and center in his campaign to flip California’s 49th District.  However, with deep roots in grassroots politics in Southern Orange County, Levin is well equipped to fight for big ideas like Medicare for All and confront Darrell Issa’s merciless attacks on Social Security and other earned benefits.

DFA responds to resignations of Sen. Al Franken, Rep. John Conyers

Today, Sen. Al Franken announced he would be resigning from the U.S. Senate in light of allegations of sexual misconduct.  On Tuesday, Rep. John Conyers announced his own resignation in the wake of multiple allegations of sexual misconduct.  On Friday (12/1), Democracy for America called on both Franken and Conyers to resign.

Statement from Democracy for America, led by the four women on its directing team, responding to the resignation of Franken and Conyers:

"The departures of Senator Al Franken and Representative John Conyers represent the cracking of a dam that generations of men have constructed against accountability for sexual abuse, assault, harassment, and exploitation in the corridors of power in Washington.

“Our country owes a debt of gratitude to the survivors who bravely spoke up and the women and men --  some in power, many not -- who believed them, lifted up their voices, and built what became a crescendo of calls for justice.  Equity in Congress and in millions of workplaces around our country will not be achieved by these resignations, but they set a floor on which the work for equity can be built.

At the same time, removing those who cause harm is only the beginning; we must also work to dismantle the systems of power and privilege that allow so many people in power to act without consequences.

“It’s also important to note that, right now, Democrats are alone in their willingness to confront the truth of sexual violence and harassment in our country. While Democrats are demanding accountability and working to deliver justice for survivors of sexual violence and abuse, Republicans, led by serial sexual assault perpetrator Donald Trump, are doubling down on their efforts to elect child predator Roy Moore to the U.S. Senate.   The contrast could not be more stark.

“If there’s anything that the #MeToo movement has taught us, it’s that in a society built on widespread and long-ignored sexual violence and harassment no organization, company, or institution occupies an impervious moral high-ground.  However, as Republicans continue to not to only ignore the problem of sexual violence and harassment, but actively make it worse by working to bring a child molester to Washington, it’s clear which political party is rolling around in the dirt.” -- Mia Moore, Chief of Staff; Kristina Powell, Finance Director; Mari Schimmer, Organizing Director; Annie Weinberg, Electoral Director; and all the directors and staff of the Democracy for America team.

Protect the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP)

Thousands of children across the country will be unable to play basketball, join the dance team, or cheerlead this year, because they can't get an annual physical.

Thousands more will forgo dialysis, surgery, or chemotherapy, because their parents won't have the money available to fund their treatment.

All of this because Utah Republican Sen. Orrin Hatch is having...

"...a rough time wanting to spend billions and billions and trillions of dollars to help people who won't help themselves -- won't lift a finger -- and expect the federal government to do everything."

Since its creation in 1997, the Children's Health Insurance Program (CHIP) has provided medical care for millions of children throughout the country. Children who, without the program, would have gone without medical treatments for cancer, broken limbs, or even annual physicals.

Now, Republicans in Congress are refusing to reauthorize funding for CHIP, leaving millions of vulnerable children at risk of losing their healthcare.

Congress has an obligation to provide for the healthcare and safety of all Americans, but especially so when it comes to protecting the lives of our kids.

That's why Democracy for America is calling on Republicans in Congress to reauthorize the CHIP program now -- and not use it as political football during short-term spending bill negotiations that could end in a government shutdown this Friday.

Sign the petition to Congress: Demand they reauthorize CHIP now and stop playing games with the lives of more than 8 million children who need critical medical care.

DFA Celebrates Wendy Carrillo’s Victory in California’s 51st Assembly District Special Election

Today, Democracy for America (DFA) celebrated Wendy Carrillo huge victory Tuesday evening in her East L.A. special election runoff for California’s 51st Assembly seat.  This is DFA’s 49th election victory in 2017.

The national progressive organization endorsed Carrillo back in June, since that time, has helped the campaign make over 20,000 calls with the DFA Dialer and assisted with on-the-ground staffing.

A community organizer, award-winning journalist, and activist who came to California with her family as an undocumented immigrant from El Salvador when she was a young child, Carrillo won the competitive race for the seat previously held by Jimmy Gomez, who vacated the seat to serve in Congress.

DFA Senior Electoral Campaign Manager Alejandro Chavez on Carrillo’s State Assembly victory:

“California’s 51st District chose Wendy Carrillo to serve them in the Sacremento because she’s an unapologetically feminist Latina community organizer who has fought for progressive values from Standing Rock to her East LA home and knows first hand the struggles of undocumented immigrants and unrecognized refugees.

“As Republicans try to ram through their immigrant-bashing tax scam in Washington and run some of the most white supremacist, misogynist slates they can find for state legislatures, values-driven inclusive populist leaders like Wendy Carrillo are showing the Democratic Party how to fight back and carving out their own space as it’s next generation of leaders.” -- Alejandro Chavez, Democracy for America Senior Electoral Campaign Manager and grandson of civil rights leader Cesar E. Chavez.

California Assembly Member-elect Wendy Carrillo on DFA’s support for her campaign:

“I am truly honored that the people of the 51st Assembly District have placed their faith in me and given me the opportunity to continue serving them in the State Assembly. I am grateful for Democracy for America’s early and strong support and look forward to continuing to work with them to preserve and promote our shared progressive values. At a time of unprecedented attacks on women, immigrant communities, communities of color, our LGBTQ friends and family, and others, we need to stand together to ensure our progressive values are protected. We must not be deterred nor divided, we must come together, resist, persist and overcome.” -- Wendy Carrillo, CA Assembly Member-elect, 51st District

DFA urges Rep. John Conyers and Sen. Al Franken to resign following sexual misconduct allegations

Today, in light of the growing allegations of sexual misconduct against Rep. John Conyers and Sen. Al Franken, Democracy for America is urging both men to resign from office.

Complete statement from Democracy for America, led by the four women on its directing team, calling on Conyers and Franken to resign and urging progressives to lead the charge for justice for survivors and accountability for all perpetrators:

"We believe the multiple women who have bravely shared their stories about the behavior of Representative John Conyers and Senator Al Franken, and we strongly feel that both men have a moral obligation to hold themselves accountable for their misconduct and resign from office.

"Sexual abuse, assault, harassment, and exploitation and the men who perpetrate them have no place in our politics, period.  While upholding that minimal standard may mean losing leaders in important fights, we should be far more concerned about the untold damage we do to the number, power, and diversity of progressive leaders when we hold back from confronting rape culture and abusive work environments anywhere and everywhere we see them.

"The right, which is led by serial sexual assault perpetrator Donald Trump and has tried to excuse child predator Roy Moore, has less than zero credibility in any effort to end our culture's long-running pandemic of sexual violence and harassment.  If progressives are going to build a country that delivers justice for survivors, real accountability for perpetrators, and works toward equity in everything we do, the fight for change must start with us."  -- Mia Moore, Chief of Staff; Kristina Powell, Finance Director; Mari Schimmer, Organizing Director; Annie Weinberg, Electoral Director; and all the directors and staff of the Democracy for America team.

Democracy for America responds to sexual assault allegations against Sen. Al Franken

Earlier today, broadcaster and model Leann Tweeden documented in an extended write-up on KABC’s website that U.S. Senator Al Franken had “kissed and groped me without my consent.”

Democracy for America, led by the four women on its directing team, issued the following statement in response to these sexual assault allegations against Sen. Franken:

"We believe Leann Tweeden and thank her for having the courage to share her story.  We are profoundly disturbed and disappointed by Senator Al Franken's behavior.  While we are glad that Senator Franken has apologized, expressed remorse, and been publicly supportive of additional investigations, those responses are nowhere near enough to repair the harm he did to Ms. Tweeden and the trust he has lost within the progressive community.

"Sexual harassment, assault, abuse, and the exploitation of women are unacceptable and have no place in our politics. Women deserve better, the progressive movement deserves better, and our country deserves better and we're committed to working with others to realizing that standard.” -- Mia Moore, Chief of Staff; Kristina Powell, Finance Director; Mari Schimmer, Organizing Director; Annie Weinberg, Electoral Director, Democracy for America

Democracy for America cheers big wins for city candidates in Tuesday elections

Today, Democracy for America (DFA) celebrated a series of big wins in mayoral and city council races from Charlotte, NC to Manchester, NH that occurred this week and will continue building progressive power across the country.

Earlier this year, DFA committed to investing half a million dollars in an effort to identify, recruit, train, staff, and elect a new generation of city officials -- mayors, city council leaders, school board members, state’s attorneys and more - who are ready to fight for racial and economic justice by winning people-powered campaigns.

This week alone, DFA-endorsed municipal candidates won seven elections bringing the current total number of DFA city wins in 2017 to 20.   Over past three years, DFA has supported a total of 97 municipal campaigns and won crucial elections from Seattle to Tucson to Chicago.

Statement from Democracy for America Chair Jim Dean on the PAC’s current 2017 city-level victories:

“All across the country, from providing safe harbor to immigrant neighbors to the racial justice reforms they’re pushing for in local policing, progressives are making America’s cities bastions of resistance to the Trump regime and ensuring that the leadership of their communities are reflective of and responsive to the people they serve.

“Given our cities’ long history of progressive leadership, Democracy for America decided to invest big in electing a new generation of city officials and, after less than a year, those investments are paying off in history-making victories all across the country.

Just this week, DFA-endorsed candidate Vi Lyles became the first Black woman to be elected Mayor of Charlotte, NC; Joyce Craig, broke through another glass ceiling to become the first woman elected Mayor of Manchester, NH; civil rights attorney Larry Krasner won a game-changing race for District Attorney in the city Philadelphia; and Ben Chin is now headed to a runoff election in December with even more votes than his near win in 2015.

“At DFA, we believe that cities can’t be an afterthought for major Democratic institutions, and they can’t be an old boys network of the corporate Wall Street wing. Our cities must be the labs of progressive policy where we can make a real difference in people’s lives, which is precisely why we’re so excited by the successes we’ve had in city-level races this week and throughout 2017.  Thanks to the hard work of the grassroots, a new generation of city leaders are emerging and winning elections and we can’t wait to work with them to deliver on their inclusive populist vision of a country where every American has the opportunity to build a life that is safe, thriving, and free.”  -- Jim Dean, Chair, Democracy for America

Details of a few of DFA’s city-level victories this week:

  • Vi Lyles became the first Black woman ever to serve as Mayor of Charlotte, NC, trouncing a rightwing Republican with 59.9% of the vote. Since its pre-primary endorsement of Vi’s campaign, DFA mobilized members across North Carolina and nationally in support of the campaign’s field, fundraising, and media events; recruited over 1,663 donors to directly support the campaign, raising $11,540.83 in small dollar contributions; and provided the campaign with cutting-edge voter contact technology tools via our DFA Dialer program.
  • Larry Krasner won his District Attorney’s race in Philadelphia. In office, Krasner is set to be one of the country’s most progressive prosecutors with a commitment to ending the death penalty, ending cash bail, and fighting for police accountability and justice. Krasner’s win is a major victory for Black Lives Matter movement leaders in Philadelphia, one of America’s most incarcerated cities.
  • Joyce Craig became the first woman elected to serve as Mayor of Manchester, NH, defeating a four-term incumbent by 2,000 votes.
  • After a narrow, run-off loss in 2015 to a race-baiting Republican, millennial progressive Ben Chin won the first round of his race for Mayor of Lewiston, ME.

Other big, 2017 city-level victories for DFA:

  • Chokwe Lumumba won his race for Mayor of Jackson, MS by besting nine candidates in a hotly contested primary --  including a well-funded incumbent and a sitting State Senator -- and running on a bold platform of Black self-determination, economic and racial justice and community.
  • Aja Brown was re-elected Mayor of Compton, CA. As the youngest mayor ever to serve in the role, Brown defeated challengers in a primary and runoff and has led the way in fighting for good public schools, accessible transportation, affordable housing and criminal justice reform.
  • In Berywn, Illinois, DFA endorsed a winning slate of 9 municipal challengers to the entrenched political establishment, comprised primarily of first-time candidates, rank-and-file union members, four LGBTQ candidates, and six Latinxs in a rapidly diversifying municipality. The nine seat victory swept in a new city clerk and bold new leadership into Trusteeships, the City Council, and the Treasurer’s offices.
  • State Representative Cory Mason won his mayoral race in Racine, WI as a fighter for working families, defeating six primary opponents and one long-serving incumbent alderman in the October runoff.

DFA hails huge win for Manka Dhingra in WA special election to help flip WA State Senate

Tonight, DFA-endorsed candidate Manka Dhingra claimed a huge victory in a Washington state special election that has helped flip control of the State Senate and control of all three branches of state government to Democrats.

Democracy for America members invested big in Manka’s race running an $150,000 independent expenditure (IE) effort to support her campaign, featuring a multi-pass canvass program, online ads, direct mail, paid phone calls, and text messaging tightly targeting registered voters who voted for the first time in 2016 or have voted sporadically in previous elections.

Democracy for America’s Chair Jim Dean on Manka Dhingra’s game-changing victory in Washington State:

“Manka Dhingra’s victory tonight is a tremendous win for Eastside voters, the entire state of Washington, and progressive voters all across the country who understand the stakes of state elections like this one.

“With Manka Dhingra in the State Senate, Washingtonians not only will now have another strong, progressive voice in Olympia, they will have flipped control of a legislative chamber and won a state government united in its commitment to standing up to Donald Trump’s attacks on our healthcare, environment, education system, and immigrant communities.

“We were proud to pour everything we could into Manka’s race and we cannot wait to see how her vote in the State Senate helps Washington continue building on its legacy of national progressive leadership.” -- Jim Dean, Chair, Democracy for America

Key facts about DFA’s comprehensive IE in support of Dhingra:

  • The IE's ads received more than 892,825 individual, in-district impressions across Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube and was watched at least 131,724 times over all three services.
  • As a part of paid field efforts, canvassers knocked on 13,888 doors and engaged in individual conversations with well over 4,000 targeted new or sporadic 45th district voters.
  • The IE's mail program sent 18,713 pieces, while its phone and texting programs contacted 5,459 voters and sent 4,179 individual messages, respectively.
  • DFA’s IE was done in close partnership with the State Government Citizens’ Campaign (SGCC) political action committee.

Democracy for America celebrates Justin Fairfax victory for Lt. Gov., 14 Delegate wins in Virginia

Tonight, DFA-endorsed candidate Justin Fairfax won his race for Lieutenant Governor in Virginia -- and, as of 9:54 pm ET, 14 of DFA’s 16 endorsed candidates for VA State House have also won.

Statement from Charles Chamberlain, Executive Director of Democracy for America, on Justin Fairfax’s victory and the rapidly growing number of victories in Virginia’s House of Delegates:

“Justin Fairfax’s historic win tonight is not only a huge victory for Virginians, it’s a big victory for anyone hungry for new leaders standing up to the wealthy and powerful and working toward racial and economic justice for every American.

“As just the second African-American to ever win statewide office in the Commonwealth of Virginia, Justin Fairfax has already made history just by winning this seat.  For Democrats, he’s also made history by showing doubters in Richmond and Washington that progressives dedicated to an inclusive populist political agenda can win big in Virginia.

“We were proud to support Justin Fairfax early in this contest, back him up to the very end, and we simply can’t wait to keep fighting shoulder-to-shoulder with him as Virginia’s next Lieutenant Governor.

“We are also celebrating several huge victories tonight among DFA-endorsed House of Delegates candidates including Jennifer Carroll Foy (VA-HD-2), Hala Ayala  (VA-HD-51), Wendy Gooditis (VA-HD-10), Chris Hurst (VA-HD-12), Elizabeth Guzman (VA-HD-31), David Reid (VA-HD-32), Mark Levine (VA-HD-45), Lashrecse Aird (VA-HD-63), Delores McQuinn (VA-HD-70) Jeff Bourne (VA-HD-71), Jennifer Boysko (VA-HD-86), Jeion Ward (VA-HD-92), and Marcia Price (VA-HD-95).

"Of particular note are the history-making victories of Danica Roem (VA-HD-13), who will be the nation’s first transgender state legislator, and Elizabeth Guzman (VA-HD-31), who will be the first Latina and one of the first first-generation immigrants to serve in the Virginia General Assembly.

“Virginians deserve a House of Delegates that represents their proud progressive values and tonight they got a huge step closer to realizing that goal.”  -- Charles Chamberlain, Executive Director, Democracy for America

As a part of its 2017 “Purple to Blue” work in Virginia, Democracy for America:

  • Endorsed 19 candidates across the state, beginning in January, and began immediate support for strategy, field, fundraising and media
  • Delivered big with DFA Dialer. In partnership with Indivisible, Democracy for America led the country’s largest volunteer-led national calling program with more than 600,000 dials to mobilize sporadic Democratic Virginia voters, focusing on Black and Brown voters across the state
  • Led the Virginia Legislative Black Caucus Training, training 15 candidates and their campaign teams on the ground on expanding the electorate, voter targeting, win number strategy, field planning and more

DFA announces end of “direct aid” for Northam in VA gubernatorial race after anti-immigrant comments

This afternoon, following comments backtracking from support for immigrant families, Democracy for America announced that it was no longer doing "any work to directly aid" Democrat Ralph Northam's Virginia campaign for Governor.

DFA never endorsed Northam in the Gubernatorial race, but, as a part of the coordinated campaign, is spearheading a grassroots calling program to mobilize Virginia voters up and down the ballot. In October, following news that Northam staffers had left Lt. Gov. candidate Justin Fairfax off canvass literature, DFA stopped asking voters or collecting data about Northam as a part of that calling program. Today, DFA decided to make this decision public.

Full statement from Charles Chamberlain, DFA's Executive Director, announcing the decision to end any direct support for Northam:

"Ralph Northam's gutless, politically senseless, and morally debased decision yesterday to openly backtrack on his commitment to standing up for immigrant families is a picture-perfect example of why Democracy for America never endorsed him in the primary and focused the entirety of our efforts in Virginia on down-ticket races, like Justin Fairfax's campaign for Lieutenant Governor.  It's also why, today, we're announcing that we will no longer do any work to directly aid Northam's gubernatorial efforts.

"Despite our profound reservations about Northam's commitment to the inclusive populist agenda Democrats need to embrace to win, following the conclusion of Virginia's Democratic primary, we have continued to work alongside the Virginia Democratic Coordinated campaign for our endorsed candidates, raise tens of thousands of dollars in grassroots donations, and make tens of thousands of calls to voters to expand the electorate.

"Those concerns proved justified when, a few weeks ago, the VA Democratic Coordinated campaign (dominated by Northam operatives) bought literature for canvassers that purposely left off Fairfax, who, if elected, would be just the second Black man to ever serve statewide office in the Commonwealth.  Following that racist action, we decided to remove Northam's name from the tens of thousands of volunteer Get-Out-the-Vote calls our members are making in Virginia, but, for the sake of Democratic comity, we refrained from publicly discussing that decision.

"However, after seeing Northam play directly into the hands of Republicans' racist anti-immigrant rhetoric on sanctuary cities, we refuse to be silent any longer and even remotely complicit in the disastrous, racist, and voter-turnout-depressing campaign Ralph Northam appears intent on running.

"The fight for racial and economic justice are core Democratic values, not talking points for convenient moments. This isn't some arbitrary purity test either.  Public dithering on basic issues of racial justice, like the need to protect immigrant families targeted by a bigoted Federal government, isn't just morally bankrupt, it's precisely why many Black, brown, and progressive white voters that should make up the base of reliable Democratic voters don't believe Democratic candidates have their backs and sit out elections.

"Let's be really clear: If Ralph Northam wins next Tuesday, it won't be because he publicly backtracked on his commitment to protecting immigrant families, but in spite of it.  And, if he loses, the blame should be placed squarely on the shoulders of the consultants who urged the campaign to cave on core Democratic values in the face of a virulently racist Republican campaign - and whose obsession with flipping white, Republican-leaning votes and ignoring voters of color has consistently failed.

"As we have from the start, we are committed to supporting DFA's endorsed candidates in Virginia through election day, but we cannot remain silent as an outdated faction of national and state Democratic Party staffers and consultants run the same old, broken, and racist playbook that lost Democrats over 1000 elected offices since 2008 and allowed a bigoted billionaire to squeak into the White House last Fall.  Our country and our party deserve much, much better." -- Charles Chamberlain, Executive Director, Democracy for America

DFA is a member-driven, people-powered progressive PAC with 41,719 members in the Commonwealth of Virginia and one million members nationwide committed to taking on structural racism, income inequality, and money in politics.

In the 2017 election in Virginia, DFA has endorsed Justin Fairfax for Lt. Governor, John Bell for Sheriff, and Lashrecse Aird (VA-HD-63), Hala Ayala (VA-HD-51), Lamont Bagby (VA-HD-54), Jeff Bourne (VA-HD-71), Jennifer Boysko (VA-HD-86), Sheila Bynum-Coleman (VA-HD-62), Jennifer Carroll Foy (VA-HD-2), Wendy Gooditis (VA-HD-10), Elizabeth Guzman (VA-HD-31), Chris Hurst (VA-HD-12), Mark Levine (VA-HD-45), Delores McQuinn (VA-HD-70), Marcia Price (VA-HD-95), David Reid (VA-HD-32), Danica Roem (VA-HD-13), Donte Tanner (VA-HD-40), and Jeion Ward (VA-HD-92) for the House of Delegates.

TAX RESPONSE: Politicians duped by Trump’s billionaire tax cut deserve “a humiliating defeat”

Today, Trump’s Republican Party is finally releasing the details of the Trump Billionaire Tax Cut and it’s as bone-crushingly bad for working families and good for the richest of the rich as expected.

Here’s a reaction to and a pledge to fight back against Trump’s Billionaire Tax Cut from Democracy for America (DFA) Chair Jim Dean:

"Much like the fight against his multiple attempts to strip millions of their healthcare earlier this year, the battle against Donald Trump's billionaire tax cuts will make it exceedingly clear which Washington politicians, both Republicans and Democrats, are doing the bidding of the mega-rich 1% and which leaders are fighting for everyone else.

"Donald Trump is and always has been a bigoted fraud desperate for the affection of the champagne-swilling moneyed class, so it should come as no surprise that the tax plan his party has produced is a mammoth giveaway to millionaires, billionaires, and multinational corporations.  And, for Trump, the idea that all this will come at the expense of a single parent working three jobs to pay for his college degree or a student struggling with her medical debt is a feature, not a bug.

"The simple fact is this:  The tax plan Donald Trump's Republican Party has put forward today is designed to fund the second homes and private jets of the richest of the rich and make it easier for Republicans to destroy the Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid systems millions of people have paid into their whole lives and need to survive.  Period. End of Story.

"The notion that Donald Trump's billionaire tax cut is focused on working and middle-class families is a dangerous joke and any Washington politician who buys it, especially Democrats, deserves a humiliating defeat at the ballot box.

“Democracy for America members are committed to doing everything we can to defeat Donald Trump’s billionaire tax cut and holding accountable any individual in Washington who furthers it.” -- Jim Dean, Chair, Democracy for America

PUERTO RICO: Tell Congress to pass real recovery and debt relief

Puerto Rico needs our help right now, but we cannot stop there. The United States has spent decades neglecting its obligation to the American citizens living in Puerto Rico -- resulting in the exponentially catastrophic impact of Hurricane Maria.

Residents of Puerto Rico are American citizens. Yet, our President and our government refuse to treat them as such.

In the aftermath of Hurricanes Irma and Harvey, the Department of Homeland Security immediately lifted the restrictions imposed by the Jones Act regulations, but failed to do so in Puerto Rico for more than a week -- causing huge delays in food, water, and other necessary supplies from reaching the island.

But the disaster isn't just from a hurricane. Last year, Congress took away Puerto Rico's control over its own spending, and handed it to a "control board" made up of Wall Street cronies. Our government weakened Puerto Rico in order to keep Wall Street creditors happy.

Now is the time for all of us to demand that our government act to repay a centuries-old debt to the residents of Puerto Rico.

Sign the petition: Demand Congress pass a disaster relief package that relieves Puerto Rico of their debt obligations and provides for lasting recovery and prosperity.

Democracy for America backs Kevin de León in California U.S. Senate race

Today, Democracy for America (DFA) announced its endorsement of State Senator Kevin de León immediately after he declared his candidacy for U.S. Senate in California.  De León, the current President pro tempore of the California State Senate, will face four-term Senator Dianne Feinstein in the June primary.

This is DFA’s first endorsement of a 2018 U.S. Senate primary challenger.

Earlier this year, DFA has endorsed incumbent Senators Tammy Baldwin (D-WI), Sherrod Brown (D-OH), Mazie Hirono (D-HI), Bernie Sanders (I-VT), and Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) in their respective 2018 reelection fights.

Democracy for America has 298,529 members in the state of California and more than one million members nationwide.

DFA Executive Director Charles Chamberlain on the decision to endorse De León in the U.S. Senate primary campaign in California:

“Californians made their state a bright blue beacon of resistance to Donald Trump’s hate-fueled agenda, and they deserve two Senators who will be relentless allies in their battle to stand up to the White House and take bold action on social, racial, and economic justice.

“From his work as a young community organizer battling the anti-immigrant Proposition 187 to his leadership in the push for a bold single-payer healthcare plan in the California State Senate, state Senator Kevin de León has spent his life fighting for justice and that’s why Democracy for America members couldn’t be more excited to support his campaign for the U.S. Senate.

“When Trump became President, de León didn’t ask people to sit back and wait, hoping maybe Trump would someday turn out OK. He immediately began working to pass policies that would help the people most immediately affected by Trump’s bigoted, greedy policies.

“The simple fact is this: We won't defeat Trump and his Republican Party with corporate Democrats pushing Republican-lite policies and weak leadership. We win when candidates offer a progressive vision for America and fight to make it happen. Kevin de León has proven he will do both and we can’t wait to see him do it in the U.S. Senate.” -- Charles Chamberlain, Executive Director, Democracy for America

DFA’s decision to endorse Kevin de León follows a “Pulse Poll” of DFA’s California members that found that 63% of respondents want a progressive leader to challenge Senator Feinstein in the 2018 U.S. Senate election.

Quote from Sen. Kevin de León on receiving DFA’s endorsement:

“Earning the early support of Democracy for America’s grassroots members isn’t just an honor, it’s a reflection of my commitment to running a people-powered campaign for the U.S. Senate that’s focused on big, bold populist progressive ideas and the active confrontation of Donald Trump’s bigoted agenda.” -- Sen. Kevin de León, U.S. Senate candidate

As the first Latino elected President pro Tempore of the California State Senate in more than 130 years, Sen. Kevin de León has been a leader in the fight to pass single-payer healthcare through the California State Senate; a fierce champion in the battle against climate change; and a stalwart ally for immigration justice who got his start in politics organizing citizens against the virulently anti-immigrant Proposition 187.  If elected, Sen. De León would be the first Latino to represent California in the U.S. Senate.  He’s committed not only to standing up to Donald Trump’s bigoted right-wing agenda, but building on California’s tradition of progressive leadership and leading the fight for big, bold populist progressive ideas.

Since its 2004 founding, DFA members have raised and contributed more than $40 million and made more than 11.1 million volunteer calls to help successfully elect 915 progressive candidates nationwide.

DFA launches $150,000 campaign backing Manka Dhingra in Washington State Senate special election

Today, Democracy for America (DFA) launched the first phase of an $150,000 independent expenditure campaign to get-out-the-vote for Democrat Manka Dhingra in a critical 2017 special election (LD-45) that could determine control of the Washington State Senate.

The comprehensive IE campaign will feature a multi-pass canvas program, direct mail, phone calls, text messages, and paid media targeting registered voters in Washington’s 45th Legislative District who voted for the first time in 2016 or have voted sporadically in previous elections.

In a state legislative district that Donald Trump lost in 2016 by a massive 37 points, DFA’s IE program aims to help voters see that this fall’s special election is a critical opportunity to make sure their State Senate can stand with Washington’s Governor and State Assembly as fully united front against Trump’s bigoted and hate-fueled agenda.

Quote from DFA Communications Director Neil Sroka on the group’s support for Manka Dhingra’s race for Washington State Senate:

“A dedicated public servant and 22-year Eastside resident, Manka Dhingra will be a strong, progressive voice in the State Senate who will ensure Washington’s government stands up to Donald Trump’s attacks on our healthcare, environment, education system, and immigrant communities.

“All across the country, people are looking for ways to stand up to Donald Trump’s bigoted, hate-fueled agenda.  We’re excited to run this campaign in support of Manka Dhingra to make sure that every Eastside voter understands the tremendous opportunity they have this November to fight back and stand up for opportunity, progress, and fairness for everyone.”  -- Neil Sroka, Communications Director, Democracy for America

DFA’s multi-pass canvas program started knocking its very first doors this week and will continue through election day, while the other components of the program (e.g. direct mail, calls, text and paid media) will hit the ground in the weeks ahead.

Democracy for America is working with Fieldworks on its canvass program; Solidarity Strategies on mail, phone calls, texts and media buying; and Gum Spirits Productions on paid media production.  DFA has also worked closely on the conception, design, and execution of this IE campaign with the volunteer leaders of the recently formed State Government Citizens’ Campaign (SGCC) political action committee.

DFA, which endorsed Manka Dhingra in May, is a member-driven, people-powered progressive PAC with 74,992 members in the state of Washington and one million members nationwide committed to taking on structural racism, income inequality, and money in politics.

Take the pledge: Volunteer to help defeat NRA candidates

How is Congress responding to last night's terror attack in Las Vegas? By getting ready to pass a bill to make it easier to buy silencers -- a top priority for the NRA.

Republican elected officials offer their thoughts and prayers. They lower flags to half-staff. But they will never act to stop gun violence and mass shootings, because they're in league with the NRA.

The NRA is unrepentant. They and their allies in Congress don't think there's anything wrong with what happened in Las Vegas last night. In fact, they are doubling down in support of laws that enable white men like Stephen Paddock to use guns to terrorize their families and communities.

Congress has caved to the NRA after every mass shooting this decade, from Sandy Hook to San Bernardino, from Umpqua Community College in Oregon to the Pulse nightclub in Orlando, and so many more. They will keep doing so until we defeat them at the ballot box.

DFA members are mobilizing to defeat the NRA and elect candidates who will confront gun violence with legislation and funding for gun safety and enforcement. This includes crucial elections in Virginia next month, where the NRA is spending big to defeat our candidates. Can you help?

Will you pledge to volunteer to help DFA defeat NRA-backed candidates across the country in 2017 and 2018 -- and replace them with leaders who will stand up to the NRA and fight gun violence?

Democracy for America endorses Derrick Crowe in Texas U.S. House race

Today, Democracy for America (DFA) announced its endorsement of Derrick Crowe in his race for the U.S. Congress in Texas’ 21st congressional district.

Democracy for America has 79,226 members in Texas and more than one million members nationwide.

Chair Jim Dean on DFA’s decision to back Derrick Crowe for Congress:

“Derrick Crowe’s campaign for Congress shows that standing up for American values like liberty and justice for all leads directly to policies like climate change action, Medicare For All, and tuition-free college. He’s showing Democrats that the path to victory in Texas isn’t in chasing Republican votes, but in championing a bold, progressive vision for the future.

“Derrick doesn’t just talk about fighting for progressive values--he puts himself on the line. He went to jail in protest of the GOP attempt to slash health coverage. He’s stood with the Latinx community against Republican attacks like S.B. 4 and the DACA repeal. And, he’s taking progressive populism back to its rural roots on issues like broadband Internet access.

“Derrick’s small-town background, Capitol Hill experience, and grassroots organizing history will make him Rep. Lamar Smith’s worst nightmare. We’re proud to back this ‘nerd for science’ as he takes on Congress’ worst climate science denier.” -- Jim Dean, Chair of Democracy for America

Quote from Derrick Crowe on receiving DFA’s endorsement:

“We're taking on Big Money and entrenched special interests in my district, and that's why Democracy for America's support is so important.

“Our campaign is fighting corporate power with people power, and DFA's support as a strong, progressive, grassroots network will be indispensable. Together, we will unseat a Trump-backing science denier in a district that is ground zero in the fight against climate change.” -- Derrick Crowe, Candidate for Congress (TX-21)

Derrick Crowe is a self-professed “science nerd” with extensive professional experience on Capitol Hill who is committed to taking on the fringe right and start delivering for all the people of Texas’ 21st Congressional District.  In Congress, Crowe will be a fearless champion for ending the rigged economy, fighting climate change, passing Medicare for All, and confronting structural racism.

Since its 2004 founding, DFA members have raised and contributed more than $40 million and made more than 11.1 million volunteer calls to help successfully elect 915 progressive candidates nationwide.

DFA backs James Thompson in bid for Kansas’ 4th Congressional District

Today, Democracy for America (DFA) announced that it had re-upped its support for civil rights attorney James Thompson in his race for Congress in Kansas’ 4th Congressional District.

This is DFA’s second time supporting Thompson for this congressional seat.  The group proudly supported him during his exceedingly strong performance in the April 2017 special election in Kansas’ 4th Congressional District.

DFA has 12,755 members in Kansas and one million members nationwide.

DFA Chair Jim Dean on the organization’s endorsement of Thompson:

“In April, James Thompson showed that, even with very little help from Democrats in Washington DC, a civil rights attorney and military veteran who is committed to run core populist progressive principles can do what many insiders might think is impossible.

“We’re proud to support James Thompson for Congress because we know his smart, people-powered campaign can not only can win in Kansas’ 4th District, but show leaders in the rest of the country how to beat back  Donald Trump’s agenda of bigotry, hate, and division by standing up for bold, progressive ideas and refusing to cave on core values of racial, gender, and economic justice.  -- Jim Dean, Chair, Democracy for America

Thompson on receiving DFA’s endorsement:

"This endorsement from Democracy for America is an important milestone for my 2018 campaign. My special election campaign could not have gotten as close to victory as we did without the help of groups like DFA. Since the national Democratic Party had written off our special election, we had to rely on outside groups like DFA to accomplish what we did in April—and we got results. We did better than any Democrat has done here in the past 20 years and moved the needle more to the left than any of the special elections campaigns for Congress in 2017.

With this endorsement, we are once again working together to promote the progressive values we know people in Kansas, and the nation, hold dear. We believe in things like preserving the Affordable Care Act, protecting our DREAMERs, promoting education, and empowering women. With his very first vote in Congress, my opponent, Ron Estes, voted in favor of the House GOP’s healthcare bill. He voted with a smile on his face for a bill which would have decimated Kansas and its rural communities and kicked more than 23 million Americans off of healthcare. I knew then that I had to continue the fight for my fellow Kansans and working Americans everywhere; because a government of the people, should also be a government for the people." -- James Thompson

A proud U.S. army veteran who went on to fight for civil rights after earning college and law degree with the help of the G.I. Bill, Thompson is a passionate progressive who understands America thrives when everyone succeeds.  Thompson’s strong performance in April’s special election with little help from the national party showed that a progressive with his focus on jobs, education, and veterans can put this deep red district in play and show Democrats across the country how to win.

Democracy for America is a member-driven, people-powered progressive PAC with more than one million members nationwide committed to taking on income inequality, money in politics, and structural racism.

Since its 2004 founding, DFA members have raised and contributed more than $40 million and made more than 11.1 million volunteer calls to help successfully elect 915 progressive candidates nationwide.

DFA resolute in fight to protect Obamcare, pass “Medicare for All” after Graham-Cassidy failure

Earlier today, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell announced that the Senate did not have enough votes to pass the Graham-Cassidy healthcare legislation, effectively ending Republicans most recent attempt to dismantle Obamacare.

Democracy for America's Executive Director Charles Chamberlain responded to Senate Republicans' decision to give up on passing Trumpcare 3.0 saying:

"While Democracy for America members celebrate Senate Republicans failing once again in their most recent attempt to gut Obamacare and replace it with a fake health care plan that would strip millions of their insurance and result in the deaths of thousands of Americans, we know the fight isn’t over and likely won’t be over for years to come.

"Healthcare is a human right, period. DFA members are committed to beating back every effort to dismantle the progress and successes of Obamacare while continuing to fight for the truly universal coverage guaranteed by Medicare For All.

"Today's news is an important step in a larger battle to ensuring healthcare access to every single American, but we still have a long way to go."  -- Charles Chamberlain, Executive Director, Democracy for America.

Democracy for America backs Veronica Escobar in U.S. House race in TX-16

Today, Democracy for America (DFA) announced its endorsement of Veronica Escobar in her race for U.S, Congress in Texas 16th congressional district.

Democracy for America has 79,226 members in Texas and more than one million members nationwide.

Chair Jim Dean on DFA’s endorsement of Veronica Escobar for Congress:

“Democracy for America members are excited to support Veronica Escobar for Congress because we know the experience she has standing up for racial, gender, and economic justice and we’re certain she’ll be a critical ally in the fights for the populist progressive reforms we need to confront Donald Trump’s hate-fueled agenda.” -- Jim Dean, Chair of Democracy for America

Quote from Veronica Escobar on receiving DFA’s endorsement:

"I am honored and humbled by this endorsement and ready to work with the members of Democracy for America, for the people of El Paso and Americans across the country. As County Judge in El Paso, I worked hard to expand access to affordable healthcare for our community.  But even with Obamacare and efforts at the local level like ours, too many Americans still lack access to quality healthcare because they lack insurance or because the costs of care are too high. The result is devastating to families. I'm ready to work together to create a system of healthcare that provides affordable, quality care for all.” -- Veronica Escobar, Candidate for Congress (TX-16)

A third generation El Pasoan, Veronica Escobar has established herself as an educator, judge, and community activists ready to fight for the border community she loves.  As an El Paso County Judge, Escobar has fought corruption in local government and took bold stances in defense of the rights of women, working families, and immigrants.  In Congress, Escobar is committed to standing up to Donald Trump and his allies bigoted and hate-fueled agenda and doing what it takes to grow jobs and expand access to healthcare, transportation, and quality of life in El Paso.

Since its 2004 founding, DFA members have raised and contributed more than $40 million and made more than 11.1 million volunteer calls to help successfully elect 915 progressive candidates nationwide.

Democracy for America has more than 61,550 members in Colorado and more than one million members nationwide.

“From his experience on Colorado University’s Board of Regents to his battles for citizens at the State’s consumer protection agency, Joe Neguse has built a career dedicated to standing up for progressive values.  Democracy for America members are  thrilled to support Joe Neguse for Congress because he’s already done great things for Colorado and our country needs the next generation of progressive leaders like him on the national stage.” -- Jim Dean, Chair of Democracy for America

Quote from Joe Neguse on receiving DFA’s endorsement:

"I am humbled and honored to have the support of DFA. People-driven campaigns are how we can fight back against what's been happening in Washington D.C. With your support, we can truly change the face of Congress and fight for real progressive change, like a Medicare-for-all system, a $15/hour minimum wage, and overturning Citizens United." -- Joe Neguse, Candidate for Congress (CO-2)

The son of hardworking immigrants from Eritrea, Joe Neguse is the co-founder of New Era Colorado, the state’s largest youth voter registration and mobilization nonprofit in Colorado.  In 2008, Neguse was elected by 2nd district voters to serve on the Colorado University’s Board of Regents, becoming the second African-American to be elected Regent in Colorado history.  Following his service as Regent, Neguse was appointed to lead the state’s consumer protection agency where he achieved a number of key victories for Colorado consumers and was awarded the 2017 “Consumer Protection Award” by the international Council on Licensure, Enforcement, and Regulation. Democracy for America celebrates Vi Lyles outright victory in Charlotte mayoral primary

Today, Democracy for America (DFA) celebrated the stunning upset victory endorsed candidate Vi Lyles achieved  in Charlotte's Democratic mayoral primary.

In the multi-candidate primary matchup, Lyles beat the incumbent mayor by 10 points and  earned over 46% of the primary vote, allowing her to claim the Democratic nomination outright and proceed directly to the Fall general mayoral election against Republican Kenny Smith.  If elected, Lyles will be the first Black woman to ever serve as Charlotte’s Mayor.

Democracy for America was among the first national progressive organizations to endorse Lyles in April 2017, raised more than $10,000 via 1,567 individual contributions, co-sponsored events, and worked directly with the campaign to set up its DFA Dialer calling tool to reach out to voters.

With Yvette Simpson's surprise victory in Cincinnati, Lyles’ primary victory marks second time this cycle that a DFA-endorsed progressive Black woman with a powerful track record of unapologetic progressive leadership has defied conventional wisdom and won a race against an incumbent mayor in a major city.

Democracy for America Chair Jim Dean on Vi Lyles outright victory in the Charlotte mayoral primary:

“Vi Lyles won an outright victory in Charlotte’s Democratic mayoral primary, not by spending hundreds of thousands of dollars airing TV ads, but by spelling out her convictions and talking one-on-one with voters about her bold vision for a more equitable, just, and fair Charlotte. Her victory may be a surprise to the pundits but not to the voters.

“Voters sent a powerful message by unseating an incumbent and putting Vi Lyles in the position to make history in November as the first Black woman to be ever elected Charlotte’s Mayor.

“City governments can no longer be a playground for Wall Street developers, violent and unaccountable police departments, or Democratic incumbents good old boy’s networks. In 2017, voters stand ready to make cities everywhere into bastions of resistance to the Trump regime, by electing bold progressive leaders, like Vi Lyles, who run on and are committed to fighting for racial and economic justice.” -- Jim Dean, Chair, Democracy for America

DFA has over 46,930 members in the state of North Carolina.

DFA’s support for Lyles is part of a 2017-18 organizational initiative to invest $500,000 in municipal races across the country that the Associated Press recently described as an attempt “turn the Trump resistance movement into tangible victories.”

Prior to her election to an at-large position on the City Council in 2013, Lyles had spent nearly thirty years in Charlotte’s city government, including more than a decade as the assistant city manager. She was instrumental in guiding Charlotte’s affordable housing plan and in the development of Mecklenburg County’s Minority and Women’s Business Enterprise Program -- both of which had a dramatic impact on improving the lives of forgotten Charlotte residents.

Since its 2004 founding, DFA members have raised and contributed more than $40 million and made more than 11.1 million volunteer calls to help successfully elect 915 progressive candidates nationwide.
