Hundreds of thousands of talented, smart, hard-working young people simply can't afford to attend college and pursue a degree that will help them achieve their dreams. And millions of others who do find a way to pay for college end up graduating with a crushing mountain of student loan debt.
It's unbelievable that America -- one of the wealthiest nations in the world -- refuses to invest in our young people's education. In response, Senator Bernie Sanders and Rep. Pramila Jayapal are announcing a bill they've been working on together. This bill will eliminate undergraduate tuition at four-year public colleges and universities. We're calling it the College for All Act.
Will you sign on to be a citizen co-sponsor of Bernie Sanders and Pramila Jayapal's bill to make college tuition FREE at four-year public colleges and universities?
Even if the ACA remains intact under Trump's Republican Party, the Congressional Budget Office predicts that 28 million Americans will remain uninsured, a disproportionate number of whom are people of color. And millions more will continue to struggle with sky-high deductibles and co-pays that they can't afford.
Some Democrats claim that a single-payer system is politically impossible. But recent polls show that the fight over Trumpcare has actually increased support for government taking a more active role in the health care system.
A new Pew Research Poll out this week found that 60% of Americans think that it is the responsibility of government to guarantee affordable health care for all Americans, including a stunning 56% of GOP voters who make less than $30,000 a year.
Embracing universal coverage wouldn't just be the right thing for Democrats to do -- it would be a smart way to win new voters and build the majority we need to defeat Donald Trump, all while remaining true to our values.
Democrats have a choice to make. They can do the bidding of corporate donors, or they can offer voters a real alternative that would provide universal access, reduce consumer costs and create a healthier country for everyone.Take Action!
Less than 1% of the prosecutors in America are Black women. Last year, DFA members helped elect Aramis Ayala -- a powerhouse who ran on progressive values to become the first Black State's Attorney ever elected in Florida history, and the first woman to serve as a State Attorney in Orange and Osceola counties.
Since taking office, she's governed how she campaigned: fighting for urgently needed criminal justice reform, restoring more power to the people, and recently taking a heroic stand against the death penalty in a key caae
As a result, Republicans are launching a new attack against her. Florida's Republican Governor, Rick Scott, is attempting to remove her and replace her with a white prosecutor on that case. Gov. Scott is punishing Ayala for her leadership and disrespecting the will of the voters in the process. We have to stop him.
Will you join DFA and Color of Change to tell Florida Governor Scott: Reverse your decision and let Aramis Ayala do her job.
The Washington Post broke the news that Attorney General Jeff Sessions lied under oath about his contacts with Russia while he was advising the Trump campaign.
This is completely unacceptable behavior for our country's top law enforcement officer, and it totally undermines the Justice Department's ability to neutrally and fairly investigate Russia's scandalous interference in our presidential election.
Leading Democrats, including Sen. Elizabeth Warren, Sen. Chuck Schumer and Sen. Bernie Sanders, are calling for Sessions's IMMEDIATE resignation and the appointment of an independent special prosecutor to investigate Trump's ties to Russia.
It is crucial that we help them build momentum right now -- and ramp up the pressure on Republicans in Congress who are still trying to cover for Trump.
Immediately after the news broke, Elizabeth Warren called out Sessions and the administration on Twitter, calling the whole situation a "farce":
"This is not normal. This is not fake news. This is a very real & serious threat to the national security of the United States.
We need a special prosecutor totally independent of the AG. We need a real, bipartisan, transparent Congressional investigation into Russia. And we need Attorney General Jeff Sessions -- who should have never been confirmed in the first place -- to resign. We need it now."
Warren is 100% correct -- but many members of the Republican leadership are still trying desperately to get Sessions and Trump off the hook. Just this morning, House Majority Leader Paul Ryan said that he "doesn't see any purpose or reason" for Sessions to step down.
We need to turn up the heat on these crooked Republicans in Congress immediately, and make it crystal clear that there will be electoral consequences for anyone in Congress who puts protecting the corrupt Trump administration ahead of the demands of their country and their constituents.
Sign DFA's petition telling Congress to demand that Attorney General Jeff Sessions step down right away -- and that Congress must appoint a special prosecutor to find out the truth about Trump's connections to Russia.Take Action!
Americans pay more -- by far -- for their prescription drugs than anyone else on the planet. Bernie Sanders is doing something to fix that.
On Tuesday, Bernie introduced a bill in Congress that would allow Americans to import affordable prescription medications from Canada. This overwhelmingly popular measure would give consumers a way to fight back against the price-gouging of pharmaceutical companies while expanding peoples' access to life-saving treatments.
In 2014, the average American spent 40% more on prescription drugs than the average Canadian. That's outrageous, and we need to help Bernie change it.
This isn't the first time that Bernie has introduced legislation to expand working families' access to prescription drugs. In January, he worked with Sen. Amy Klobuchar on an amendment to a budget resolution that would have done the same. But 13 Democrats -- including New Jersey Senator Cory Booker -- worked with Republicans to kill it.
Reporting revealed that many of the Democrats who voted no had strong ties to pharmaceutical companies.
There was an immediate progressive backlash. Bernie blasted his colleagues for lacking the guts to stand up to Big Pharma, while their constituents ramped up the pressure through phone calls and social media.
Now, thanks to that grassroots activism, Booker and 3 other Democrats who voted no are co-sponsoring this bill -- proving just how important it is for us to keep holding establishment Democrats accountable in the Trump era.
Drug prices in the US are soaring, and millions of people are being forced to go without the medications they need. On the campaign trail Donald Trump promised to do something to make drugs more affordable. Now, Bernie and Senate Democrats are calling his bluff.
Help Bernie show Trump and Congress that the American people are demanding relief from Big Pharma's price gouging: Sign our petition supporting the Affordable and Safe Drug Importation Act today.
He did it again. Joe Manchin, Democratic Senator from West Virginia, once more voted to confirm one of Donald Trump's Cabinet nominees. This time it was Scott Pruitt, the oil and gas shill Trump picked to destroy the Environmental Protection Agency.
Joe Manchin has voted for 11 out the 14 Cabinet nominees the Senate has decided on -- that's worse than any other Senate Democrat. Manchin even voted for the white supremacist Jeff Sessions. And he remained silent when Trump launched a racist attack on Elizabeth Warren.
We cannot allow any Senate Democrat to undermine the resistance or enable Trump like this. There need to be some consequences. Joe Manchin is a member of the Senate Democratic leadership. Democracy for America is joining CREDO Action, #AllofUs, Other98, and 350 Action to tell Chuck Schumer that Manchin shouldn't serve in Senate leadership any more.
Sign the petition and tell Chuck Schumer: Drop Sen. Manchin from your leadership team.
Because of the disruptive and expansive Muslim ban signed by Trump on Friday, hundreds of refugees and people from predominantly Muslim countries -- many of whom have been legal residents of the US for years -- were detained in airports across the country over the weekend, sparking widespread protests.
When several courts issued temporary stays of Trump's deportation order, federal customs agents ignored the judges' orders, citing directives from above.
And when acting Attorney General of the United States Sally Yates stood up and told her department not to defend this unconstitutional order, Donald Trump fired her on the spot -- sparking comparisons to Richard Nixon's "Saturday Night Massacre."
Every hour, it is becoming more and more clear: A constitutional crisis is unfolding before us. Democrats in the Senate must do everything humanly possible to reverse this inhumane and possibly illegal executive order and to punish the undemocratic actions the administration is taking to enforce it.
Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer and the rest of the Democrats need to shut this Congress down, refusing to take any action whatsoever -- including approving any of Trump's nominees -- until the Muslim ban is revoked.
Sign our petition now and tell Sen. Chuck Schumer and the Senate Democrats to SHUT IT DOWN and withhold consent on everything, including Trump's nominees, until the racist Muslim ban is revoked.
Donald Trump announced his pick for the U.S. Supreme Court live on TV.
One Senate Democrat is already pledging to do just that -- Oregon Senator Jeff Merkley told Politico that he will do everything he can to stop Trump's Supreme Court nominee:
Sen. Jeff Merkley (D-Ore.) said in an interview on Monday morning that he will filibuster any pick that is not Merrick Garland and that the vast majority of his caucus will oppose Trump's nomination. That means Trump's nominee will need 60 votes to be confirmed by the Senate.
"This is a stolen seat. This is the first time a Senate majority has stolen a seat," Merkley said in an interview. "We will use every lever in our power to stop this." -- Politico, 1/30/17
This is good news. But it's not good enough for the "vast majority" of Senate Democrats to oppose. We need all 48 Senate Democrats to commit to doing whatever it takes to stop Trump's Supreme Court nominee. And we need to tell them that right now.
This is urgent: Sign the petition and tell all 48 Senate Democrats they MUST oppose Trump's Supreme Court nominee, including using the filibuster if necessary. Our rights and freedoms depend on it.
At this point, it's clear: The Trump administration sees press briefings as nothing more than opportunities to inject their distortions and misinformation directly into the ears and minds of the public. Yet the networks keep enabling Trump and Spicer by airing these briefings live, before reporters have had the chance to sort fact from fiction.
Journalists have a responsibility to give the public the facts -- and that means not airing the Trump administration's lies before they can correct them. Will you sign our petition demanding that the networks stop airing Trump press briefings live right now?Take Action!
Tell Democrats to stand up to right-wing extremists: Sign the petition to impeach Maine Gov. Paul Le
Before there was Donald Trump, there was Paul LePage.
Maine's Tea Party governor has a trail a mile long of saying and doing horrible, bigoted things -- and, so far, he's getting away with it.
And now -- with Donald Trump's election -- LePage has been emboldened.
On Election Day, Maine voters approved an increase in the minimum wage to $12 an hour, a major step forward in the fight against income inequality. But LePage told his Department of Labor not to enforce the new $12 minimum wage law.
Defying the voters of his state, LePage won't punish employers who won't comply. If the government doesn't enforce the minimum wage, employers will simply not pay workers what they've earned. He's even calling the initiative a "recommendation" -- which, under the Maine constitution, it isn't. It's law that must be enforced to benefit workers.
This is outrageous. This is lawlessness. And it's grounds for impeachment. LePage was nearly impeached twice in 2016 -- but legislators let him off the hook. Until they act, LePage will continue to say and do terrible things.
It's time for Democrats everywhere to stand up to right-wing extremists -- from Donald Trump to Paul LePage. Sign the petition and tell Maine legislators: Impeach Gov. LePage!
Donald Trump is not normal -- and we should not treat his impending presidency as if it is. He just went and proved that again when he launched a bigoted attack this weekend against Civil Rights leader and American hero Congressman John Lewis.
John Lewis has spent his life protesting for justice and racial equality. He was beaten on the Edmund Pettus Bridge in Selma, Alabama in 1965 in a march for voting rights. It was in that tradition that Rep. Lewis announced late last week he will join more than a dozen other Congressional Democrats in not attending Trump's inauguration this coming Friday.
It was no surprise, sadly, that Trump responded with a Twitter rant viciously attacking John Lewis and the Georgia district he represents. Trump showed he has no respect for civil rights, for a Black leader who has worked so hard for justice, or for an American community.
As a result, another dozen Democratic members of Congress have announced they too will not attend Trump's inauguration. That's a good start. But why should any elected Democrat attend this inauguration and help normalize what is already shaping up to be the worst presidency in history?
Democracy for America is joining CREDO Action to urge every single Democrat in Congress to not attend Trump's inauguration on Friday, January 20. Will you join us and send a message?
Sign the petition and tell Congressional Democrats: Stand with John Lewis -- don't go to Trump's inauguration.
One of the most horrifying proposals Donald Trump offered during the campaign was a plan to create a registry of Muslims in the United States.
This registry brings to mind some of the worst aspects of American history, and is rooted in bigotry and hate. Trump's plan wouldn't be the first attempt -- a previous version used during the Bush Administration didn't lead to any convictions on terrorism charges, but it did lead to tens of thousands of cases of harassment, arrest, and deportations.
Trump's transition team has signaled they plan to go ahead with this awful plan anyway. We need to stop him -- and that includes making it hard for Trump to actually assemble a registry.
That's where the tech companies of Silicon Valley and beyond come into play. They have amassed huge amounts of data on people living in the United States. If they cooperate with Trump in building a registry of Muslims, those tech companies could do immense damage.
Initially, only Twitter told a reporter from The Intercept that they would refuse to help build such a registry, but other leading tech companies refused to respond. So Democracy for America joined CREDO and human rights groups and sent a letter demanding other tech companies follow Twitter's lead.
As a result of that pressure, Facebook and Microsoft announced this week they too would refuse to help Trump build a registry of Muslims.
But other tech companies -- including Google and Apple -- still won't answer. And their CEOs met with Donald Trump just this week. Will you help pressure them? Sign the petition demanding tech companies protect civil rights and refuse to help Trump build a registry of Muslims in the United States.
If we're going to stop Donald Trump, we have to organize in local cities and communities -- not just in Congress or state legislatures. Right now, DFA-endorsed City Councilmember Regina Romero is showing what that local leadership looks like in Tucson.
Trump has promised to forcefully go after and deport at least 3 million undocumented immigrants. We need to take that threat very seriously. Trump backed up his statement by having Kris Kobach, the architect of the anti-immigrant SB1070, named to his transition team. When Trump acts on his plans, over a quarter-million "Dreamers" (students who came to the U.S. as young children) will be targeted and at risk of being torn from their families and homes.
Tucson has been fighting back. In 2012, the Tucson City Council stepped up and voted 6-1 to declare Tucson an Immigrant Welcoming City. Right now the City Council and Mayor can take that leadership again. But they must do more than just thank and welcome immigrants.
Councilmember Regina Romero proposed a policy to ensure the Tucson Police Department will never engage in collaboration of any kind that would endanger any person in Tucson, regardless of status or national origin. She needs our help pressuring the Mayor and Tucson City Council members to fight Trump -- and defend all Tucson residents.
Tell Tucson City Council members and the Mayor to join Councilwoman Regina Romero and commit to passing a non-collaboration policy that will protect all people in Tucson.
The battle to protect Medicare from Donald Trump and Paul Ryan is heating up fast -- and Paul Ryan is already feeling defensive. Just yesterday he claimed we have nothing to worry about:
"This is the latest wave of Democratic talking points to try and play 'Mediscare' politics, which is what they typically do every other Tuesday." -Paul Ryan, quoted in The Hill, 12/1/16
Don't believe him. Paul Ryan has spent his entire career in Congress trying to destroy Medicare. He has repeatedly said he wants to cut benefits, privatize Medicare, and make it harder and more expensive for people to get health care. Seniors would have to spend money they don't have getting the care they need.
Donald Trump has already proven he'll help Paul Ryan destroy Medicare -- and he picked Tom Price, an extremist anti-Medicare zealot to become the Secretary of Health and Human Services. Price has already suggested Republicans could act quickly in 2017 to destroy Medicare.
We know we can stop them -- because we stopped George W. Bush when he tried the same attack on Social Security. The secret: mobilize the public to unite Democrats against any attack on Medicare, and go on offense against Republicans. That's exactly what DFA plans to do.
Republican Michigan Attorney General Bill Schuette just filed a court action asking the State Supreme Court to preemptively shut down any attempt at a presidential election recount.
The police crackdown on protestors against the Dakota Access Pipeline is getting worse, thanks to an official order of evacuation from Republican Governor Jack Dalrymple.
While brave water protectors and their allies are standing their ground in sub-freezing temperatures, the Morton County Sheriff's Department is now saying it will order its troopers to pull over and threaten people carrying much-needed supplies to the Standing Rock camp with $1,000 fines. And the governor's order effectively ended emergency services to the camps, even though violent attacks by the police continue.
President Obama's silence on this horrendous violation of the human rights of the Standing Rock Sioux and their supporters is simply unacceptable. He needs to put an end to these dangerous police attacks right now by stepping in and shutting down the pipeline.
Call President Obama today and tell him to step in and stop the attacks on #NoDAPL protesters RIGHT NOW.PAST ACTION
The lame duck session of Congress has just begun, and already some Democrats are caving to GOP pressure to pass a massive last-minute giveaway to Big Pharma. Thankfully, Elizabeth Warren is fighting back.
Last night, she gave a barnburner speech on the Senate floor taking aim at the so-called "21st Century Cures" Act and the Democrats supporting it:
"When American voters say Congress is owned by big companies, this bill is exactly what they are talking about. Now, we face a choice. Will this Congress say that yes, we're bought and paid for, or will we stand up and work for the American people?
The American people didn't give Democrats majority support so we could come back to Washington and play dead. They didn't send us here to whimper, whine, or grovel. They sent us here to say NO to efforts to sell Congress to the highest bidder. They sent us here to stand up for what's right. Now, they are watching, waiting, and hoping -- hoping we show some spine and start fighting back when Congress completely ignores the message of the American people and returns to all its same old ways.
Republicans will control this government -- but they cannot hand over that control to big corporations unless Democrats roll over and allow them to do so."
As usual, Sen. Warren nailed it. If Democrats want to be the party of working families, they need to stand up to Republicans who want to shovel money into the pockets of shady drug companies, big dollar GOP donors and Donald Trump -- especially when that means flooding the market with untested and potentially dangerous medical treatments.
Sign our petition telling Democrats in Congress to vote NO on the GOP's gigantic giveaway to drug companies now.
On Sunday, Donald Trump went on Twitter again to inject another dangerous lie into our national discourse, making the ridiculous claim that he "won the popular vote if you deduct the millions of people who voted illegally."
Trump's outrageous tweet was immediately condemned and denounced by voting experts, the media, and even conservatives as both a brazenly cynical attempt to undermine public perception of Hillary Clinton's national popular vote lead -- now more than 2 million votes and counting -- and a racist dog whistle attack on voting rights in advance of the 2018 and 2020 elections.
The truth is that no matter who you voted for in 2016, an overwhelming majority of Americans -- 62%, according to one public poll of registered voters on November 15-16 -- think that the Electoral College system is broken and believe that the winner of the White House should be determined by National Popular Vote. According to Gallup, a majority of Americans have wanted to abolish the Electoral College every time the question has been asked, going back to 1967.
Agree? Then please join Democracy for America members across the country, who are using the National Popular Vote email tool right now to contact state legislators and ask them to pass a National Popular Vote bill. Click here to send your email today.
The National Popular Vote interstate compact would make every vote equal throughout the United States and ensure that every voter, in every state, will matter in every presidential election.
Here's how it works and how we could pass the National Popular Vote by 2020:
- The U.S. Constitution (Article II, Section 1) gives the states exclusive control over awarding their electoral votes.
- Under the National Popular Vote interstate compact, participating states would award ALL of their Electoral College votes to the candidate who receives the most popular votes nationally.
- The National Popular Vote interstate compact would not take effect until enacted by states possessing a majority of the electoral votes -- that is, 270 out of 538 Electoral College votes.
- Currently ten states and the District of Columbia have already adopted the National Popular Vote plan -- this includes both Republican and Democratic controlled legislatures. These states (and D.C.) currently represent 165 total electoral votes.
- If we can get states that represent 105 more electoral votes on board (for a total of 270 votes), then this plan would immediately take effect -- and we would never have a repeat of the 2000 or 2016 election again.
Democracy for America has been working to support the National Popular Vote interstate compact for many years. But it's taken on a powerful new urgency as we face the nightmare of Donald Trump occupying the White House. We cannot wait any longer.Take Action!
A report by New York magazine revealed that "Hillary Clinton is being urged by a group of prominent computer scientists and election lawyers to call for a recount in three swing states won by Donald Trump."
CNN, The Huffington Post, The Guardian and several other news outlets quickly picked up the story -- though FiveThirtyEight's Nate Silver and Nate Cohn from the New York Times expressed skepticism.
What no one can dispute is that Hillary Clinton is now leading Donald Trump in the popular vote by 1.7 million votes. And once California finishes its count, her lead could exceed more than 2 million votes.
Unfortunately, the popular vote is meaningless in our Electoral College system. Trump is winning the Electoral College vote thanks to very narrow leads in key swing states such as Wisconsin (27,000 votes) and Pennsylvania (68,000 votes). And two weeks after the election, Michigan is still too close to call.
Voters in states like Wisconsin, Pennsylvania, and Michigan cast paper ballots that are counted by electronic machines. Fortunately, these machines can be audited to ensure that the results are reported correctly.
Given the high stakes of this election -- and how incredibly close the vote is in crucial states -- it's essential that the American people have confidence the election was fairly won. That's why Democracy for America is joining the call for key swing states to audit the vote.
An audit would not be a full recount, but a statistically valid sample that will prove whether the actual votes match the reported totals. If there's something wrong, we'll have evidence to take action -- before the Electoral College meets in December.
Time is running out: Sign the "Audit the Vote" petition to demand swing states audit the presidential election before the results are certified and the Electoral College meets on December 19.
This post-election nightmare ushered in by Donald Trump is getting ugly fast.
On Friday morning, Trump selected Sen. Jeff Sessions to be his attorney general. Sessions is an ultra-conservative who was previously denied a federal judgeship in 1986 for calling the NAACP "un-American," referring to an African-American federal prosecutor as “boy,” and disparaging the Voting Rights Act.
We cannot “wait and see” what a Donald Trump administration will be like. He has already made it abundantly clear.
In the days following the election, Donald Trump has offered a top White House position to a white supremacist, mocked Americans exercising their first amendment right to protest in response to his campaign of hate, and refused to rebuke a campaign surrogate who defended a proposed illegal registration program of Muslim Americans by citing the internment of Japanese Americans during World War II.
Democracy for America -- and our friends at MoveOn, CREDO, and across the progressive movement -- agree: Chuck Schumer and Democratic leaders need to stop playing footsie with Trump and pretending we can find common ground on some issues without also legitimizing Trump’s bigoted and hate-fueled agenda.
Tell Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer and Senate Democrats to stand up to Trump and refuse to collaborate on his racist agenda. There can be no compromise on rejecting bigotry.
That's right. Today, Democracy for America is joining the Progressive Change Campaign Committee, several leading Senate Democrats, and a strong coalition of organizations to renew the push for a public option for health care -- and we need your help right now to build momentum in Congress.
In 2009 and 2010, Democracy for America members like you led the fight to allow Americans to buy into a public, Medicare-like option in the health care reform bill that became Obamacare. DFA members mobilized hundreds of thousands of Americans to lobby Congress to demand it.
We nearly won. The House passed a public option. But after Joe Lieberman sided with the insurance industry and threatened to filibuster the Obamacare bill, the Senate shied away from it. Instead, they embraced state exchanges.
Unfortunately, despite all the good that Obamacare has done, it's clear that we still need a public option. Greedy insurance companies that never supported health care reform in the first place are jacking up premiums and deductibles, while pulling out of many state exchanges.
It's time to renew the fight for a public option. Democracy for America is joining Senators Bernie Sanders, Jeff Merkley, Chuck Schumer, Patty Murray, and Dick Durbin -- along with the Progressive Change Campaign Committee, Presente, UltraViolet, MoveOn, Daily Kos, Working Families Party, and the AFL-CIO -- to launch a Congressional resolution in support of a public option. We need your help right now to build strong momentum out of the gate.
President Obama announced the Department of Justice would stop using private prisons. But the federal government's largest use of private prisons is for immigration. The Department of Homeland Security just announced that it is going to review whether it should also stop using private prisons.
Bernie Sanders was right when he said "It is wrong to profit from the imprisonment of human beings and the suffering of their families and friends. It's time to end this morally repugnant process, and along with it, the era of mass incarceration."
Sign the petition: Tell the Department of Homeland Security to stop using private prisons.
Thanks for signing our petition calling on Mylan CEO Heather Bresch to stop price gouging people with serious allergies and drop the price of the EpiPen immediately.
On Tuesday, Democracy for America joined Public Action, MoveOn and activists from across the country to deliver more than 750,000 signatures -- including yours! -- to Mylan's corporate headquarters in Pittsburgh, PA.
Our action resulted in plenty of media coverage, including pieces by NPR and the Pittsburgh Press-Gazette. The local activists who joined us told the assembled reporters their personal experiences with EpiPen, and how Mylan's extreme price hikes have impacted their lives:
Rachel Viehman of Squirrel Hill recently used an EpiPen on her 5-year-old daughter Gabriella for the first time, after the girl came into contact with peanut butter that was on a booster seat in a restaurant.
“It was a horrible and terrifying experience, but at the same time I have no doubt that it saved her life,” she said.
The mother of two said her 10-month-old son, Robert, also has food allergies, and that doctors have directed her to keep an EpiPen nearby every time she feeds him something new.
“Companies like Mylan they have the power of life and death over my family and other families, because they know that, for me, I can’t put a price on my child’s life,” Viehman said. - 90.5 WESA 8/30/16
Our delivery made it clear to both Heather Bresch and Congress that Americans are sick and tired of a health care system that allows corporations to extract maximum profits at the expense of peoples' lives and well-being. Democracy for America strongly supports Bernie Sanders's Medicare-for-all single payer health care plan -- and we've been on the front lines fighting for health care reform for more than a decade.
Thanks for helping us send a message to Mylan and to greedy CEOs across the country.
The past 72 hours have been heartbreaking, frustrating, and infuriating for all of us here at Democracy for America. Two Black men, Alton Sterling and Philando Castile, were gunned down by police officers -- and video of their killings shocked the nation. Then, late last night, five more lives were taken when police officers who were working hand-in-hand with peaceful protest organizers in Dallas, Texas were killed by a revenge-minded shooter.
As an organization, we've been struggling to figure out the right way to respond to all of this tragedy, injustice and sorrow. A member of our Communications team, Brieanna Fisher, shared the following with friends and family on Facebook earlier today, and she has given us permission to share her perspective with you. We hope you will appreciate her thoughtful, touching words as much as we did. - Charles Chamberlain, Executive Director, Democracy for America
I have been silent for a couple days trying to get my thoughts together, and digest everything that has happened.
While police shooting unarmed black men is nothing new, every time it happens it hurts more than the last time. Each time we see the images of another body laying in the street it chips away at the little bit of progress that as a community we have made.
These last two occurrences seem to hurt more, because of the devastating videos that I have watched over and over. Not because I want to, but because I can't distance myself from them.
As a mother of two black boys it scares me to death knowing that no matter what I do or what I teach them it might not be enough. That every time my son steps outside I can not be sure that someone is not going to look at his skin and feel he does not deserve to walk this earth.
Because of a new overtime regulation issued this week by the Labor Department, over 13 million workers will get a raise. Starting on December 1, most salaried workers earning up to $47,476 a year will receive time-and-a-half overtime pay when they work more than 40 hours during a week. The previous cutoff for overtime pay, set in 2004, was $23,660.
Unfortunately, the battle is not over yet.
Republicans and their corporate allies have already begun their effort to overturn the new rules. Paul Ryan has said he is "committed" to passing legislation in Congress to stop Americans from getting this raise. President Obama will veto it. Then Congress will try to override it.
That's where DFA members like you come in. Your activism has helped make this expansion of overtime pay possible. Now we need you to defend it against Republican attacks. Please sign my petition today.
The health insurance industry is at it again: Thanks to a huge planned merger between the country's two largest health insurance companies, Cigna and Anthem, consumers all over this country are facing the prospect of much higher health insurance premiums.
Unfortunately, corporate Democrats like Governor Dannel Malloy of Connecticut are doing everything possible to help this merger go through, despite the devastating affect it would have on working families.
Incredibly, Malloy is also serving as co-Chair of the DNC's Platform Committee, whose job it is to uphold the Democratic Party's commitment to affordable health care for all Americans in the party platform at the convention in July.
It's hard to take the Democratic Party's stance on affordable health care seriously when prominent members of its leadership are using their elected offices to help the insurance industry profit at the expense of consumers.
We need to take a stand at this critical moment in the 2016 election cycle and tell the DNC that we expect them to practice what they preach.
Sign Democracy for America's petition to the DNC: If Gov. Malloy won't stand up to the insurance industry by turning against the Cigna-Anthem merger, he needs to step down from the Platform Committee immediately.Take Action!
After Senator Chris Murphy and 37 other Senators held the floor for a 15-hour filibuster on Wednesday to oppose the NRA, they forced their Republican allies to vote on common sense gun violence legislation.
Unfortunately, Republicans used their majorities in the Senate to block these two bills. But Sen. Murphy's filibuster broke Republican opposition to even having a vote. It also put the NRA on the defensive for the first time in a long time.
Perhaps the biggest news today came from across the street, where the Supreme Court upheld Connecticut's assault weapons ban. Passed in the wake of the 2012 Sandy Hook Elementary School mass shooting, this bill could serve as a model for similar action in Congress and in states that still don't ban assault weapons.
Senate Democrats have acted, and the NRA and their Republican enablers are on the defensive. Clearly, there's been a major shift in Congress. Now progressives are uniting to urge Democrats to step up the pressure by supporting an assault weapons ban. Will you join us?
Together, we are launching an ambitious, five point plan to fix our broken financial system and make Wall Street work for the real economy, not the other way around:
- Pass a 21st Century Glass-Steagall rule to make banks smaller, simpler, and safer.
- Create a tax on Wall Street's trades that would generate billions in revenue for things like free college.
- End the carried interest tax loophole that lets billionaire Wall Street fund managers pay taxes at a lower rate than teachers.
- Close the CEO "bonus loophole" that subsidizes corporations for ridiculously large executive salaries.
- Promote affordable and fair financial services -- like postal banking -- so low-income families don't have to rely on predatory schemes like payday loans.
Stand with Elizabeth Warren, DFA, and more than 20 organizations: Tell Congress to take on Wall Street, break up the big banks, and repair the rules to benefit working families, not the billionaires.Take Action!
More than 40 days ago, after more than 10 months of trying to reach a fair deal with their bosses, nearly 40,000 Verizon workers put everything on the line and went on strike to protect their jobs.
This strike has become one of the largest and most visible labor strikes in recent history -- and it is beginning to hurt Verizon's bottom line. Earlier this week, Reuters reported that Verizon CEO Lowell McAdam is already spreading the word that the company's second quarter results are likely to take a hit because they've been unwilling to reach a fair deal with their workers.
The fact that leaders in the company are fretting is proof that the union workers are winning. But the strike is taking a toll on the workers' finances, too.
The tens of thousands of Verizon employees who walked out to demand a fair contract have now been without pay and health insurance for more than a month -- and they have no idea when they will get paid again.
Louisiana Governor John Bel Edwards is close to signing HB 953 which will classify police officers as a protected class -- making any violence against law enforcement a hate crime. Yet many communities continue to suffer from the impact of police brutality -- ripping families' lives a part.
This would be the first kind of law that adds occupation as a protected class -- placing higher value on officers' lives than civilians. This law could potentially be implemented throughout the U.S.
For the last 3 years, the Black Lives Matter movement has been instrumental in calling for change in the ways communities of color are policed. From Ferguson to Baltimore, to New York City, activists and community members continue to fight against an unjust system.
This bill is a deliberate slap in the face to everyone who stands up for civilians who face discrimination daily.
Will you call Governor John Bel Edwards and urge him to veto HB 953?
Following the Supreme Court decision to gut the Voting Rights Act, Arizona has been at the forefront of voter suppression -- disenfranchising Black and Latino communities.
On Tuesday, we saw the consequences after 140 of 200 polling places were closed, forcing voters to wait in line for hours -- some for more than 5 hours.
Believe it or not, Maricopa County Recorder Helen Purcell -- who has been in charge of elections in the county since 1988 -- immediately defended herself, answering a reporter's question by asserting that voters were to blame:
“Well, the voters for getting in line, maybe us for not having enough voting places.”
This is unacceptable. Sign our petition calling on Maricopa County Recorder Helen Purcell to resign.PAST ACTION
The American pharmaceutical giant Pfizer is merging with Allergan in order to shift its tax address offshore to Ireland and avoid paying its fair share of taxes here at home.
By moving its tax address (but not its headquarters and employees) to a tax haven, Pfizer will likely avoid paying the U.S. taxes it owes on about $140 billion in profits it has stashed offshore. That will cost us tens of billions of dollars in lost revenue – money that is needed to maintain critical services here at home. But we can put a stop to it NOW!
Call on Congress today to stop Pfizer from deserting American taxpayers and to ensure that it pays its fair share of taxes.
In addition to the thousands of pledged delegates, who are allotted to each campaign based on primary and caucus results, there are 712 superdelegates -- made up of Democratic elected officials and party insiders -- who get to vote on who the party's nominee should be at the convention.
If the race is close, superdelegates could determine who the nominee will be regardless of who the majority of voters supported. Pretty undemocratic, isn't it? The race for who the Democratic nominee will be should be decided by the voters, not by a handful of party elite.
Add your name now to call on all Democratic superdelegates to pledge to support the candidate who wins the popular vote.
Tonight, progressive allies in Chicago stood up and confronted the campaign of bigotry, hate, and division Donald Trump has been waging all across the country.
The bravery of the those who stood up tonight in Chicago stands in stark contrast to the weak and feckless Republican candidates who shared a stage with Trump last night and refused to condemn the culture of violence, bigotry, and hate he's creating with his disgusting campaign.
Here's the tweet DFA just put out in a show of solidarity with the brave TRUMP protesters in Chicago:
There’s true bravery in speaking out & confronting bigotry. We stand w/ our allies confronting @realDonaldTrump's racism in Chicago tonight.
Yesterday, Senate Republicans announced that they would withhold their support for any Supreme Court nominee put forward by the White House, making it even more important that President Obama select a progressive nominee who can earn broad, popular support nationwide.
Since Justice Scalia's death, more than 118,000 Americans have rallied behind a Democracy for America petition calling for President Obama to choose a progressive justice to replace Scalia on the court.
Statement from Charles Chamberlain, Executive Director of Democracy for America, on the importance of a progressive SCOTUS nominee in light of Republican obstruction:
"Mitch McConnell's announcement yesterday makes it even more important that President Obama select a Supreme Court nominee who can quickly earn the respect, admiration, and support of the American people with their understanding that our Constitution is rooted in progressive values that clearly protect things like abortion rights and sit at odds with rulings like Citizens United.
"It's time to stop pandering to Republicans, right-wing interests, and out-of-touch Democrats who just don't get where Americans and our constitution really are on the big issues that matter today.
"Nominating a so-called 'centrist' to the Supreme Court would be an unmitigated disaster that would sap Democrats of the broad, public support needed to either get Senate Republicans to reverse their obstruction or to rally the grassroots troops we'll need to defeat the GOP in November." -- Charles Chamberlain, Executive Director, Democracy for America
Michigan Governor Rick Snyder, along with the premeditated actions of his administrators, has effectively poisoned the children of Flint by allowing lead and other toxins to enter their drinking water. The consequences are devastating now and will be for generations to come.
For this outrageous catastrophe, Gov. Snyder must resign -- and go to jail.
To poison all the children in an historic American city is no small feat. Even international terrorist organizations haven't figured out yet how to do something on a magnitude like this.
I want to be absolutely clear here: If we don't attract national attention to what Gov. Snyder did, what happened in Flint could happen in all of our communities. That's why I need your help to bring Rick Snyder to justice.
Bernie Sanders gave a major speech on reining in Wall Street. In it, he called for busting up the biggest banks and reinstating the Glass-Steagall Act.
Both of these steps are necessary to avoid another “too-big-to-fail” bailout, along with another crisis that robs millions of Americans of their jobs, homes, and savings. The only way to contain Wall Street’s excesses is with reforms so big, bold, and public they can’t be watered down.
Mothers and young children were ripped from their homes and taken to detention centers. Some were put on planes and sent to countries where their lives are now at risk.
Rather than protect these families who face torture or death if they are deported, the federal government is embracing Donald Trump's awful anti-refugee, anti-immigrant rhetoric. This has to stop.
Bernie Sanders gave a very strong, powerful statement in support of immigrant and refugee families and explaining why these raids are awful and unacceptable. In an important letter (click here to read it), Sanders urges President Obama and the heads of the Department of Homeland Security and Immigrations and Customs Enforcement to stop the raids.
This is an important moral moment, and the White House needs to hear from you right now. Stand with Bernie Sanders and sign the petition urging the federal government to stop these raids -- and protect these refugee families.
A 12-year old child, Tamir Rice, was shot and killed by a police officer while he was playing in a park in Cleveland last year. Tamir Rice was black. The officers who killed him were white.
Cuyahoga County prosecutor Tim McGinty announced that the grand jury declined to charge the officers who killed Tamir Rice. That was what McGinty wanted.
McGinty went to the grand jury to defend the police and deny justice to the victim, recommending that they not file any charges. It gets even worse. Not only did McGinty defend the officers who killed Tamir Rice, he blamed the child for what happened.
The fix was in from the start: Cleveland prosecutors never had any intention of charging these officers. It's time for the federal government to step in and bring Tamir Rice's killers to justice. The DOJ is already investigating this case. The facts are clear, and there's no point in further delay.
Sign the petition right now: tell the U.S. Department of Justice to file federal civil rights charges against the officers who shot and killed Tamir Rice.
Over the course of the 2008 presidential primary race, the Democratic candidates debated each other 26 times. These debates drew intense media attention, gave primary voters and the public at large the opportunity to hear our candidates' positions in detail -- and led to a fantastically successful election year for Democrats.
But this year, not only has the DNC limited the number of official debates to six -- they've tacked on an "exclusivity clause" that would ban any candidate who participates in a non-sanctioned forum from participating in the remainder of the debates.
We cannot let the DNC continue to hurt the prospects of our eventual Democratic nominee by keeping progressive ideas out of the spotlight. Tell Debbie Wasserman Schultz and the DNC to schedule additional debates.PAST ACTION
