Who Am I?
Cynthia Dill is an award-winning civil rights lawyer who resides in Cape Elizabeth, Maine with her husband Tom and two children, Harrison and Isabel. Dill graduated from the University of Vermont in 1987, and from Northeastern University School of Law in 1990. For 20 years Dill managed a busy and successful small law office, and represented clients in Maine, New Hampshire and Vermont.
After serving on the Cape Elizabeth Town Council for two years, Dill was elected to the Maine House of Representatives in 2006, where she served as a member of the Judiciary and Ethics Committees. Among other things, Dill sponsored the legislation that created the Broadband Strategy Council and was appointed Chair. As a leading proponent of the expansion of broadband, Dill was instrumental in obtaining over $35 million of investment for the Three Ring Binder Project, a nationally recognized private/public partnership that will bring high-speed Internet access to rural parts of Maine and widely expand the potential for good jobs, enhanced educational opportunities, healthcare and public safety.
In May of 2011 Dill was elected to the Maine State Senate by 68% of the vote in a special election to represent District 7, comprised of South Portland, Cape Elizabeth and part of Scarborough.
At the national level Dill was appointed Vice Chair of the National Conference of State Legislature’s Communication, Financial Affairs and Interstate Commerce Committee, and was a member of the Executive Committee Task Force on State and Local Taxation of Telecommunications and Electronic Commerce. Dill has also been a panelist at numerous national conferences on broadband and net neutrality.
In addition to her legislative and public policy work, Dill worked as the Director of the Common Cause Digital Democracy Project in Washington, DC, and often works as an adjunct faculty member at Southern Maine Community College. In August of 2011, Dill founded the Friends of the Maine Woods, a statewide organization that advocates for the study and creation of a Maine Woods National Park. Dill is a member of the First Congregational Church of South Portland, where she taught Sunday School for many years and is an active community volunteer. She serves on numerous local boards, and enjoys being a writer and commentator on local radio and television shows. To read her blog, DCW, go to: http://dillsconventionalwisdom.blogspot.com/
Why Am I Running?
I want to be a strong progressive voice for Maine middle class families and local businesses in the US Senate. I want to cast votes that will improve the quality of life for our children, our seniors, our veterans and future generations.
Maine's current Republican senator has been in Washington for 33 years, is a member of the 1%, makes choices that don't reflect working family values and is completely out of touch with the people she represents.
Hold Me Accountable!
To work for economic justice through fair taxation, consumer and environmental protection, strong labor laws and the end of corporate personhood.
Social justice by supporting universal healthcare, equal rights and opportunities to succeed, marriage equality and choice.
My DFA values:
Our campaign is a grassroots effort supported by small businesses, men, women and kids from every walk of life. We will work passionately and honestly to engage our community in conversation about what's important, and how we can move forward together.
I am not afraid to speak truth to power and my campaign will openly reflect my progressive values.
My Campaign is People-Powered!
We have sought and received financial support from numerous individuals from $10 to $2500, and have an extensive list of volunteers. This Sunday, February 26, 2012, volunteers will be speaking on behalf of our campaign and collecting petition signatures at over 50 meetings.
We actively use social media to engage and inform, and in less than 2 months have a Facebook following of 468 people and an email list of approximately 4500 people.
