Who Am I?

Jon T. Haugen, age 52, retired 24 year Military Veteran, Navy pilot, Democrat, has announced his candidacy for election to Washington’s Third Congressional House Seat currently held by freshman Rep. Jaime Herrera Beutler, (R). Haugen graduated in the top third of his class at the United States Naval Academy in 1981.
Jon has been married to his bride, a Registered Nurse at Legacy Salmon Creek, for 26 years. They have three children who all attended Clark College and graduated from Washington State Universities.

Why Am I Running?

Freshman Rep. Jaime Herrera Beutler (R) is a Professional Politician. She has only had government jobs since college. She voted for the Ryan Budget which, according to the Wall Street Journal, would "end" Medicare.
This campaign comes down to: The Economy and Jobs; Medicare and Social Security; Debt and Deficit.
Haugen has a plan to bring up to 18,000 jobs through the I-5 bridge project; he would protect and strengthen Medicare and Social Security; his only pledge is to the United States of America not former lobbyist Grover Norquist. He would vote to raise taxes on those making over $250,000 and apply those monies to the debt and deficit.
Haugen is well versed in foreign policy and the military; he would protect and strengthen Medicare and Social Security; Haugen’s idea for a new bridge at I-5 would save $3 billion, without tolls.
Haugen served in posts around the globe, give him the background in foreign policy that Herrera Beutler, by her own admission, lacks.
He cited an op-ed piece by the congresswoman in The Columbian in which she wrote “I was not elected to Congress because of my foreign policy experience.”

Hold Me Accountable!

1. A new Bridge at I-5 over the Columbia River will be under construction without any Tolls. This is project in planning since the 1990's, has already wasted over $200 million in planning. I have found a template for a new bridge here, by finding one currently being built over the Mississippi at St. Louis for $640 million which would save $3 billion. Estimates are this new bridge would bring about 18,000 jobs. My Republican opponent, a Freshman Congresswoman, refuses to take a stand on this vital project but she did vote to $183 million for the Bridge to Nowhere, H.R. 662, in March 2011.

2. Save Medicare.

I am a 24 year Military Veteran, Navy Pilot, I eat, sleep and breath community, security and liberty.
I got involved in Washington State politics because of Public Education. When I moved back to Washington State I was disturbed by the fact that Public Schooling Funding required a 60% Super-Majority vote for funding. This had been in the Washington State Constitution since 1932. I was told "forget about it, this will never change". I was the only private citizen to testify before both the House and Senate in support of 'Simple Majority' or a 50% vote plus one to increase funding to Public Schools. The measure passed in the Senate with one vote, I believe I had an impact on that vote. The measure then went to the Voters of Washington State to change the constitution. I spent my own money to buy all the lawn signs for the entire state. Working with the PTA and Progressive voters throughout Washington State we changed the Washington State Constitution!
I ran for State Senate against a 16 year incumbent Republican in 2008. I lost but had the most votes every by a Democrat (more than 32,000). I appeal to Democrats, Independents and some Republicans.

My Campaign is People-Powered!

Washington's Third District is beautiful, diverse and big. I am meeting with actual voters. Rep. Jamie Herrera Beutler has not held a Town Hall meeting for over 240 day (17MAY11). I am putting many miles on my car meeting with voters.
