Who Am I?
I'm a professor of economics and the director of the Center for Economic Education; I've been a member of the faculty of Arkansas State University since 1981. I hold a Ph.D from the University of Nebraska and am former assistant dean and MBA director in the College of Business, a member of former Governor Clinton's Council of Economic Advisers, and past president of the Missouri Valley Economic Association. I was contributing economics editor for the Jonesboro Sun, 1991 -2011.
A military veteran, I enlisted in the Air Force and served 4 years in Vietnam; from 1966-1970. In 1969 I was awarded the Air Force Commendation Medal for meritorious service.
I'm married to Rosmary, my wife of 39 years. I've five children and live in Jonesboro, Arkansas.
Why Am I Running?
Our country needs to set fiscal priorities that put families back to work. I have the knowledge, understanding, and ability to craft better economic policies for a better future.
As Arkansas’ next Congressman, I will extend tax cuts that help working families, while making sure Arkansas has the money it needs to pay our educators, firefighters, and police. On matters of healthcare I will work to create a balance between access and cost. ‘Voucherizing’ our healthcare puts Arkansas families at risk and does nothing to address the rising costs of healthcare. Social Security is a commitment that must be kept to our seniors and future generations of Americans. I will defend that commitment. We also need long-term solutions to address our crumbling bridges and aging infrastructure.
Hold Me Accountable!
I will protect Social Security. I will work on common sense solutions that help working families.
My DFA values:
My father had an 8th grade education. He worked 3 jobs. My mother worked as a waitress. All so we could live in the suburbs and have a better life. I understand what it is like to work hard for those you care about. I grew up knowing what it's like to worry about having enough money for food, rent, heat, clothing. I can empathize with families who have been laid off and lost jobs due to the recession. As a family ours survived though a combination of community, faith, and security.
I enlisted in the Air Force after high school and served in Vietnam. The GI Bill paid for me to earn my Doctorate in Economics. I've worked the last 30+ years at Arkansas State University, my students all share the idea that the are improving their lives with the hope of achieving a better life. Liberty is the ability to improve, to have the social mobility to have a better life through hard work, education and effective government.
I am ready to go to work for the Arkansans of the 1st District.
My Campaign is People-Powered!
I am not a career politician. I am not the establishment's darling. My message of Better Economics, Education and Effective government has been spread house meeting to house meeting. Through facebook and via word of mouth.
My campaign isn't run out of some think-tank in Little Rock Arkansas or Washington. It's run from my kitchen table. With volunteers and college students who care about making life better, more fair and more equal.
