Who Am I?
John Alvarez is the epitome of a true Floridian: He was born in the heart of Miami, was raised in Fort Lauderdale, attended the University of Central Florida in Orlando, and made the wise decision of settling down on the beautiful Space Coast.
John Alvarez lives in the heart of southwest Palm Bay. There, he teaches 6th grade at a public school. He is involved in local politics, community activism, and free tutoring to students and English language learners. Currently, John Alvarez is running for the Florida House of Representatives. He is running in district 30 which is in Brevard county, Florida.
Why Am I Running?
I am running because I want to be the leader that my community desperately needs. I want to put people first in all of the decision-making that goes on in Tallahassee. As a teacher, I know first hand how the 1.3 billion dollars in education that Governor Scott and the Republican-led legislature passed actually feels.
Finally, I am running because I want to better the lives of the hard working people of Brevard by promoting economic growth and development, investing in our infrastructure, and by providing a quality education for our children. When I have the honor of representing my community in the Florida House, I will work endlessly for this district and put people before the interests of corporations and lobbyists. Again, I will always put people first in the decision-making that occurs in Tallahassee.
Hold Me Accountable!
Jobs - Brevard has an 11.2% unemployment rate. My opponent Rep. Ritch Workman has been all over the news media and late night talk shows because of his support to repeal an archaic law that bans dwarf tossing. Clearly, he is repealing this in order to earn additional bills to introduce at the start of the legislative session. Unfortunately, he is selling it to the media and to the public as something that will create jobs. The people in my area are hurting and this man has done absolutely nothing about our jobs crisis. I want to bring wind, solar and wave energy technologies to Brevard and I will advocate for this when I win.
Education - I am a public school teache and as a teacher, I am quite aware of the realities that our students, teachers, and schools are facing. We have students who do not comprehend basic arithmetic, language, and science. High school students graduate without fully comprehending civics or English language mechanics. In many cases, elementary and middle school students are being taught solely how to take the FCAT test, instead of receiving a well-rounded grade level education. Our college students are also facing hardships – my opponent Rep. Workman supported raising college tuition for students 15%. This is the 4th consecutive year that tuition is raised.
Health Care - I want tol fight endlessly to make certain a valuable social safety net like Medicaid is ensured for the most vulnerable Floridians. Currently, Gov. Scott and the Republican-led legislature privatized our Medicaid system. I want to repeal unfair laws like HB 7107 and 7109. Once these are repealed, Medicaid will again be a secure program that will not be run by an industry that puts profit over people.
